I just finished building a new Athlon64 system and am having problems with the CD-RW drive that I installed. At least I think that's where the problem is.
First I had a bunch of problems installing Windows, but finally got it up and running. I started installed the drivers for all the hardware and this is where the problems arose. Several times, after inserting a CD, I would get an error message saying "The application failed to initialize properly" and it had a code with it that I didnt write down, but I think it was 0xc00000006 or something like that. Anyway, so I tried manually starting the setup.exe file. On two of the CDs that seemed to work OK, but it seemed kind of slow to start. Then when I tried to do the same thing on the ATI 9800Pro Catalyst CD, the menu screen comes up but clicking on the menu items doesn't do anything. I hear the drive spinning up and I get the hourglass cursor and then nothing happens. I've also tried manually navigating to the "Driver" folder and running that setup program with the same results.
In general, the CD drive seems slow to respond to everything I try to do. It is a LiteOn LTR-52327S 52x CD-RW, connected as the master on the secondary IDE channel. The only thing I can think of is that I may need to replace the IDE cable. I ended up having to use an older one I had laying around. It's probably only a few years old and it's never been used before (it came with a CD-RW I bought for another computer), but I don't know what else could be the problem, besides maybe a defective drive or some sort of conflict with another piece of hardware...
Here's what I have:
Athlon64 3200+
MSI K8T Neo mobo
1GB Mushkin PC3200 RAM (512MB currently installed)
LiteOn CD-RW LTR-52327S
Mitsumi Floppy drive
ATI Radeon 9800Pro
Antec 430w PSU
Is there a way I can test the drive to see if there are problems with it?
