Lite-On CD-RW and DVD drives - difference btw model S vs W and d vs no d?

I am a bit confused on all the lite-on cd-rw and dvd drives...they have the same spec but they are different model numbers....
i.e
i have the 32123S 32x12x40x CD-RW...but there are also 32125W....what the heck is the difference between the two?
i also have the LTD-163D 16x40x DVD drive....and there is LTD-163 also...
are these just the same drives???
why is there different model number then???

The -S drives use PCAV, where the speed of drive changes in sections.

The -W drives use CAV, where the speed of the drive changes smoothly over the entire disk.

The -S drives are easier to get, but the -W drives have a higher average speed, and supposedly recording quality is better because there are no jumps in speed.

Apparently it is possible to flash a -S drive to a -W drive; better results are noticeable according to testing.

For what it's worth - I just built a system for a friend using the LTD-163 (black) DVD reader and while it works fine, I noticed the thing being VERY LOUD when reading some CD's (commercial) and some DVD's. Not all of them I tried but about half. We're talking to the point where the case shakes. I have a friend that reports the same problem with the same model.

There's a special way to go about it...it's not just a simple firmware flash. I'll update with link later.

The flash needs to be done in DOS with a special flasher program...MKTFLASH.

Look here for all the information you will need to flash your Lite-On. Also, if you have a certain model of the 32X drive, it can be flashed into a 48X one quite easily. All the information you need is in that link...

Enjoy!

actually i have a couple of questions....
1) would flashed to a new model help your cd-rom capabilities? ie. i have a 32x12x40...and if i flashed to a 48x12x48x...would i be really getting 48x12x48x or just 32x12x40
2) is there any harm on flashing to a new (higher) model?

If you flashed it to a 48X, it would be a 48X drive. It would burn, read, and re-write at the same speed as a 48X12x48.

all i can say is the LT- 32123S sucks my ass.

i had one for a bit, returned it to newegg.

i would not burn well on fuji's or these generic "great quality" from fry's, but would on old cheap ass 74min 8x memorex. that drive was horrible. my friends 123s series 24x was the same way. very picky with media.

i had a 40125s for a while, and thats pretty good. the 125 series i thnk can all be flashed up to 48x. the 123s series can go up to 32x.
