Lite-On Burners

Seems like their burners are at least $50 cheaper than any others I am looking at. I like the TDK 24x ($150 - Moms discount from Circuit City) and the Plextor 24x ($155 from Newegg). Then I see the Lite-On 24x for $80 at Newegg. What's the deal? Why is it so much cheaper than any of the other burners at the same speed? And for the guys that have them, how are they? Do you get good burns?

I have one Pac digital Lite On rebadge 16x burner in my main rig. Bought a second one for my new upcoming rig to replace my 2ndary rig I am selling. No problems at all with the lite on. I highly recommend. No coasters and can burn a full 15 song CD in 5mn flat. Pretty quiet too. Waaay quiter then say Yamaha. I definately recommend it. They also come out with quite a few firmware updates for their drives.
Save some loot and go with the lite on.

The money isn't an issue, but I don't want to spend $50-75 more for the same quaility. If the TDK or Plextor really are better, I'd rather spend the extra cash and get one of those.

Liteon Tech. Support=suckage.

Granted, that they are cheaper, but, when they breakdown there is very limited tech support.

I'm buying a new burner next month and I can tell you it won't be Liteon.

cdrinfo.com has a head on review with the liteon vs plextor. Honestly neither one comes out on top, they are almost the same in performance and features with a few slight differences. I have the liteon burner, its my second from liteon, my 4th overall, and its the best one I've ever owned. They do frequent firmware updates, the drive rips audio fairly quickly, is GREAT for copying cds, checks the quality of the cd so as to prevent buffer underruns, of course has a burn proof type protection, and overall just works fairly flawlessly. I use it with Clonecd/Nero/Cdrwin mainly, and all programs work fantastic with it. I may sound like im trying to promote it, but the drive is just really good, the best for the money IMO, and trust me, I use the drive extensively for much more than "casual" use. Probably burned about 100 cdrs so far, not a single failed burn, using all sorts of media. Anyways...just get it.

Don66: Could you be more specific, like RMA issues, or your drive just broke fairly quickly, etc...? I probably went through about 500 burns on my 12x Liteon without any issues before I sold it for this one.

There was a similiar thread open about two weeks ago on Anandtech about this very same question, and someone said that the Lite-on drives use the same chipset (They call Burn-proof something like Buffer-underrun Protection for trademark reasons). The only real difference between the two drives are the actual drive mechanisms, which could mean anything. Maybe they burn alittle slower, or they have inconsistence cause the wobble frequency is a bit higher, I don't know. But a Lite-on is atleast 2/3rd's as good as a Plextor.

FYI: Checkout Nexthardwareshop.com for some good prices on Plextor drives

Edit: Anyone have any problems extracting the outter tracks on an audio CD with the Lite-on drives? Just wondering, cause I know Plextor figured out how to do it @ 16x

The Lite-On's are excellent drives, and many people here have been using their 24X and 16X burners with much success....myself included. Lite-On has only recently entered the retail market, but they have been the leading manufacturer of optical drives for the OEM's for a very long time. I think they have actually been in business for over 25 years IIRC. I have the 24X and it absolutely flies. I personally believe the quality of the Lite-On's to be equal to the almighty Plextor's. The reviews of the Lite-On 24X I have seen recently have the Lite-On beating the Plextor in some tests, and losing to it in others...but neither wins by anything noticeable. I have built several customer systems recently with the 24X and I have had no complaints...just comments on how fast it is. I wouldn't be surprised if Plextor has better support only because Lite-On is not really established in the States yet like Plextor is. Great drive, great price...blazing burns...excellent choice in my opinion. I think you mainly pay for the name with the Plex...sort of like Asus in the motherboard department. 🙂

Hehe, yeah. I was just thinking about the ASUS to Shuttle debates I've heard in the past month. The Lite-On sounds really good. I'm think I'm going to go with that one. Unless I can get a sweet deal on that TDK from CC. I still need to get my mom to check the price she can get it for.

Cryption, are you referring to DAE with programs like Audiocatalyst and the last track fails? If so then its because your ripper sucks, use Exact Audio Copy to fix that problem.

No, but thanx for the tip. I'm referring to an article in a recent addition of MaximumPC where they stated that manafacturers of high-speed burners have been struggling with all sorst of problems, the biggest of which was that most 16x - 24x burners @ the time could not extract the last few tracks of an audio CD with any consistency.

<< Why does your mom have to go check that price for you? Just curious but how old are you? >>

Maybe his mom gets a discount at the local store?

My Mom works at Corp Circuit City and gets some great deals. I got my GF3 Ti200 for $140😉 And I'm a 19 year old college student btw.

Hmm...well now that you've said that I'm curious, I tend to use my DVDROM for ripping because its faster, but I'll have to give the burner a try. Any idea if there is a required cd length before the problems start occuring?

Joey, well you have, maybe not the name "Lite-On" but Pacfifc digital (you know those generic lookin things at Best Buy and other places) are like rebadged Lite-On's .. as for dae .. i wouldnt use my burner for that, maybe its wasteful, but i shell out for drive to do all my cdrom installing/extraction etc stuff, cheap way to increase the life of the drive, and the performance is generally a little better .. just my thoughts ..
