Lite-On burner failure problem

BD231

Hey All,

I know many of you buy Lite-On optical drives and I do so myself. I've found their CD burners a bit flaky though and all in the same way.

After quite a few months of use they develop a "spin up, spin down, won't record" habbit and not even a flash fixes the problem.

Anyone run into this problem? Anyone know how to fix it? I've got 2 busted burners and just had another one go out on me last night 🙁.

Did you try different media? Try to RMA it. You might want to look at getting a differenct brand in the future like Plextor.

Yep. I've seen that weird motor issue. It won't stop working, but the spin up and down becomes erratic. I have had it happen on Sony combo drives too (rebadged Lite-On's). I just picked up a 52X Lite-On though, since it was only $29 shipped, but when I bought a DVD burner this week, it was not a Lite-On for this reason.

That's too bad. Unlike some others, I dont personally think that Lite-On is "top" quality - they are after all one of the many Taiwanese mfgs that compete mainly on price, not quality. That said, they are probably one of the higher-quality "cheapo" drive mfgs. All of them seem to have some QC issues though.

I miss my Yamaha, those things were built like tanks. You might try to find a good working CRW-F1 model on eBay or in the FS/T forum.

I'm curious exactly how your drives failed though. Were they the same model, or purchased from the same store, or at the same time?

I almost think that some sort of environmental factor(s) may have contributed to killing them. Do you burn many discs back-to-back? What kind of system cooling do you have? Do you smoke? Have pets (fur, etc)? Notice a lot of dust around (on monitor screen, etc)?

All of those things can contribute to the early death of an optical drive.

Personally, I think they have used cheaper motors in the past, but the 52X I just got is quieter and smoother than any other Lite-On I have found, so they may have rectified that. As for Lite-On, I wouldn't ever say they were "top quality", but they are generally the fastest, and handle all forms of CD protection and such that some other "higher quality" drives do not. Also, Lite-On has been around for a LONG time. They only came into the retail market recently, relatively speaking. I can't count the number of old Dell's, HP's, Compaq's, etc that I've worked on that have all had Lite-On's in them, and some of them are ancient and still work.

I think when they got popular in the retail segment, they started skimping on motors to keep the prices low. I'm just guessing though.
