...my 40x12x48 Lite-On died. Got a RMA from Newegg. This is the first time I've had a burner die on me before. Darn, and to think it only lasted a couple months. :(

Window's detected it. It just wouldn't burn anything. Tried everything that I could to fix it. Nothing. I flashed it using the correct firmware, didn't do anything. Upgraded Nero, nothing, switched IDE cables, nothing.

It would just hang at 4% the whole time for like 9 minutes. You could hear the drive spinning up and down, like BurnProof kept kicking in and out, but it wouldn't do anything. :(

Oh well, RMA to Newegg time. :(

I had the same problem with a 32X. I bought it at Staples. I couldn't find the receipt or the box, so I couldn't take it back. :( I got a 48X for like sixty bucks though, so it wasn't all bad. At least burners aren't several hundred dollars like they used to be.

I know. But when they were like 300 bucks they worked for years. My old HP 2x and 4x that I had lasted me 2 years. This Lite-On lasted only a few months. :(

I had a plextor 16x that died just after a year .... my current 32x liteon is OK so far .... I have an old 4x SCSI that I bought like 4 or 5 years ago that still makes perfect burns ... They just dont make em like they used to .... Of course nowadays they are only 50 bucks ... so its not quite as big a problem as like in 1998 ... when 2x burners costed $300+

My 12x plextor has been running 2 years no problems so far. But yeah I do hate the trend how they cheapen electronic parts so we have to buy more often.

Got a 4x that's 3 years old and still works, not sure who it's by, came with a Dell machine. Got a cheapo thing (Cyber-Drive) 32x that's working after 9 months or so, went with it because it was the cheapest there was.

They'll die if you burn a lot of cd's all at once cause there not intended for continous duty. Lite-On recommends burning a few cd's and then giving it time to cool down.

A friend of mine burned 30 cd's all in a row and by 31 the unit died.

Burning at slower then max speed will also add to the life of the burner. When I'm not in a hurry I burn at slower speeds cause waiting a minute or two longer is no big deal plus I'm assured the burn won't be corrupt.

I had a 32x Lite on and it died in 4 months
Newegg RMA'd me a 40x Lite on and it is dying now after 5 months

:disgust::| I just want to RMA it, get my money back, and buy another brand.

Looks like Lite-On's are not all that then..

You ever heard that saying, "You get what you pay for."

Looks like I will not be jumping on the Lite-On bandwagon anytime soon.

heh, yea I've heard that saying before. But then me and my 1.5 year old Liteon just waved goodbye to my buddies 3 week old plexor. Poor thing only burned 5 CD's before it went to the plexor graveyard...

I had a Lite On 48X burner do the same thing after about 2 or 4 months. I wonder if Lite On is having reliability problems?

I had the same experience with my 12 Plextor. I have been using an Yamaha F1 for over six months without any problems.

Funny thing is that the rebadged Lite-Ons seem to last a lot longer. I wonder if the quality control is tighter for ones that are made for well known names like Sony and TDK.

Maybe.....

Did you try blasting the inside of the burner with one of those air duster cans? Usually it's dust that kills the drives.

Yepper - a couple people in a thread at Anandtech express thier isolated cases of bad luck and they must ALL be crap. C'mon...pretty narrow view wouldn't you say?

Seems like I had just about the same problem awhile back.. I just installed new ASPI drivers and it fixed the problem completely.

Spend $5 on a can of air and $10 on a dry CD lens cleaner kit. I've bought several "bad" CDRWs for next to nothing on the FS/FT forums only to find dirty lenses. Their loss, my gain. ;)

Ever thought it could be because more people own Lite-Ons? Almost everyone I know has switched to a Lite-On. I personally have 3 drives in computers I've built and they are all working great.

I haven't kept a burner for longer than 6 months. Now that the speed has max'd out at 52x, on to DVD burners.

I had a 4x2x6 yamaha that died in 2 years. I now have a 8x4x24 yamaha that is still alive after two years. I also now have a DVD+RW by Verbatim (rebadge NEC); well see how long it lasts.
