I have the "new" Lite on 48.12.48 CD RW and I am having this problem... when I try and burn a cd (cd-r) it stops the process at around 4-9% and the CD just keeps spinning in the CD RW. Any ideas as to why this could be happening? I use Nero, which it came with.

sounds like a bad burner, but check the following

Do you meet the minimum system requirements?

Is your burner sharing IRQs?

Is DMA enabled?

Is the IDE cable bad?

Have you tried reinstalling the burner software?

I have heard that the 48x burner from Lite-ON has been exhibiting some probs....they say that it's better to go for the 40x for now. BUT.....some peoples are okay like cthulhu says. After trying the suggestions might be an idea to RMA.

You could also try:

- Different Burning Software
- DIfferent brand of CD-R's
- Lowering the speed and turning Smart Burn Off

Also, what kind of CD are you making?...data?...audio?....are you copying from another CD, if so, is the disk okay, is your CD Reader fast enough....If you are copying from hard disk then does hard drive activity stop....is DMA enabled on the hard disk?

I have the same issue with the same drive. I RMA'd my first one, and the second drive does the same thing. At first it will work fine then all of a sudden it will fail at the end of a burn and then when I try to burn another disc it will freeze @ the 4-6% mark and never even start the actual burn process. It will do the same every time after that. If I reinstall Windows and Nero, it will burn a few discs fine the do the same thing, usually while trying to burn a DAO/96 disc. I think this is a Nero problem and not the drives. I switched to Disc Juggler and have not had this problem.

Alright well my computer is definetly fast enough, check my rig to see that :) I am gonna try using a different program, possibly Disc Juggler. What does it run? I am gonna look. Thanks for all the help, if switching the program does not help, I will try what Acanthus and Corm said, you guys really got this stuff down, Thanks again.

Now I am just fed up with the burner... last night I tried to burn with it, without using Nero and it didn't work. In fact it told me a blank CD-R was not blank twice. So then after I remove Roxio Easy CD Creator, I decide to restart my computer. It has an error, so I eject the blank CD-R in my CDRW and then it goes to the Windows XP loading screen, only its very dull and the blue bar is not going across at all! I hit restart after waiting for a few, and then it asks me what mode I wanna start in because Windows did not shut down properly. I try NORMAL, then Last Saved Config. and then even Safe Mode. The first 2 bring up the dull non loading Windows Screen while Safe Mode stoped at an error that had something to do with agp (it was in the line) but I forget the exact one. I shut down completely, wait a little, turn it back on and same problem!! This morning, I am getting ready to take my computer to my friends so he can work on it (he knows A LOT more then me about this stuff) and I decide for some reason, to unplug the Lite On CDRW from the motherboard and computer in general. I do this, turn on the computer and the stupid same error comes up, so I hit NORMAL MODE and what happens?! Windows XP loads! Now here I am talking to you guys.... any ideas to explain this?!

I had the same problems with the Nero software that came with a generic drive I wa installing for someone. After pulling my hair out, we downloaded(after using the credit card) the latest Roxio software for $80, and it worked.

In your case, since you now have the driver out, de-install ALL the software for the burner that you may have installed, and all remnants of the drivers for the CD (If any in XP). Then try to re-install the burner, and the latest Roxio. Good luck.

I don't know XP very well, and this is one reason why I won't touch it, not to mention the "activation code" that you have to use every time you change motherboards.

Problem = Roxio Software

Uninstall Roxio = Death

ugh.

I have never witnessed a clean EZCDCreator uninstall.

I took it off completely now, I am gonna have to get some other software or a better copy of EZCDC... I am making sure everything is gone from the burner and then I guess start over. It was crazy thinking I had ruined my computer last night! Seems ok now :)

I was about to get the Lite On 48x12x48. Unlike seemingly everyone else in these threads, I'm building a Linux-only machine. People mention software issues with this drive, so here's a curveball: how about software for Linux? Anybody with experience using this drive (or the 40x) under Linux? Or do I have to buy a much older drive to be safe?

Just curious ..... is your cdr support 48x ? If not maybe that is your problem ..... my friend using a LG 40x cdrw burning with a 12x cdr, end up with the problem u had. But after he change the writting speed to 12x , the problem solve. Some drive like NEC( previous own) teac .... they recognize the cdr supporting speed ...and burn it with the right speed ....

I had the same exact problem on my 40x lite-on with nero. (locking up the beginning of the burn). I exchanged it for the same model, but I haven't tried the new one out.

The first one worked perfectly for 4 or 5 days with nero, then stopped (as if it had magically lost its' burning ability). I tried cable swap, DMA, IRQ Force ASPI, different burning software, different Nero versions and nothing worked. I'd be interested to find out if there is a way to prevent this before my replacement drive dies.
