I'm just starting out with a new Lite-On LDW-411S DVD burner, but so far things aren't looking good. I'm trying to give this thing a workout this week to decide whether or not I should return it, but I'm hoping not to spend a multiple of the drive's cost on testing tons of different media.
I'm looking for opinions on whether I should return this and go for something else (like the NEC ND-1300A, ND2500, Plextor PX-708A, Pioneer DVR-A06 or something else). And I'm also looking for any tips that might get the Lite-On working better.
Here's the story:
I've got a Lite-On 411S (manuf. Oct 03, originally with FS05 firmware). I flashed it to FS0F firmware and have been testing Fujifilm 4x DVD-R (TYG01 Taiyo Yuden). I'm using DVD-R rather that another format, because I'm burning data backups that I want to be readable on older PC DVD-Roms that don't read DVD+R. I'm only testing simple data file ISO discs, I haven't even gotten into trying DVD video yet.
I'm running WindowsXP Pro with latest updates on a P3-800 with an Asus CUBX Motherboard and the burner is in UDMA 2 mode on the Secondary IDE Master (UDMA33) with a LTR-163 DVD-Rom as the Slave. AutoInsert is disabled.
First try: burning files to an ISO with the bundled Sonic Recordnow DX 4.6 (with latest update), seemed to burn fine, but failed the verify: "Error-10 at sector 1766736 - command 28 sense:03 ASC: 11 ASCQ:00". According to the help file, this error is an "unrecoverable read error". I can read some of the files on the Lite-On burner, but Windows locks up trying to read the disc in my other DVD-Rom drive.
After this failure, I changed the Secondary IDE to PIO, then back to UDMA2 and uninstalled/reinstalled the Secondary IDE channel and DVD drives in the device manager. I also unplugged my broadband and shut down NortonAV and Zonealarm.
Second try: with Nero 5.5.10.35 burned and verified 100%. This disc seems to have burned correctly and it does load in my plain DVD-Rom drive (after a lot of seeking). This got my hopes up.
Third try: with Nero burned ok, but failed the verify:
So, 2 out of 3 burns were bad with a supposedly good firmware, very high quality media and proper settings (as far as I can tell from scouring the net).
I'm going to continue testing with different combinations of settings, but so far I am discouraged. I will try burning at slower speeds, though these Taiyo Yudens are rated for 4x. If I get consistently good burns at 2x with high quality 4x media and hit-and-miss burns at 4x, this drive is going back to the store. I might be able to live with 2x for smooth playback of video DVDs, but not for general data burning.
Should I stick with this drive and try to work out its "quirks"? How many coasters should I burn before I throw in the towel?
Any other tips that I missed to make this drive work?
