++Edit++ seems the "blackout" is over, info all over the net about it, including Here

As there has been much talk about overclocking the 4x dvdrw drives to 8x I have noticed that many sites have instituted a defacto blackout of this information. I understand the potential for hoseing your drive but this type of information has been free flowing on previous models and like situations with other manufacturers drives.
Has anyone else noticed this? Are my web searching skills lacking (more than likely)
It would be a bummer if this is the shape of things to come in the hardware modification world :(

I bought a 411s and it's nice. I also bought some crap -r dvd's made by khypermedia. Smartburn says it's 1x media, so nearly an hour per disc.

Is there any way to override smartburn or otherwise burn these coasters quicker?

If Im not mistaken, and you use nero, you can turn it off by going under recorder, then advanced and checking off the smartburn option.

Opened my 851S and took a picture of the PC board. It's a 451S. :Q
:camera: <<---- 732kB

Take note that it has the MT1818E and MT1816E (Mediatek chipsets).

LiteOn 811S review

This chipset is suitable for DVD dual drives with both CD/DVD read and CD-R/RW, DVD-R, DVD +RW write functions. The general system specification is 8/8/4/4/48/24/48/16, i.e. DVD+R recording up to 8xS, DVD-R recording up to 8xS, DVD+RW recording up to 4xS, DVD-RW recording up to 4xS, CD-R recording up to 48xS, CD-RW recording up to 24xS, CD-ROM decoding up to 48xS, and DVD-ROM decoding up to 16xS. Moreover, it can support DVD-RAM playback, Mt. Rainier CD-RW/DVD+RW format, and true CAV mode recording functions. In addition, this chipset can support power saving function.

So.... max would be.

DVD+/-R - 8x ---------- Firmware for DVD-R 8X yet to be released.
DVD+/-RW - 4x
CD-R - 48X
CD-RW - 24X
CD-ROM - 48X
DVD-ROM - 16X

Picked up an 2 811S at OfficeMax this weekend to replace my 4x Cendyne single -R format. I will be extremely happy when they release the firmware to allow 8x burning for -R. If it doesn't come soon enough, I may have to but +R media! :Q
