I have never read any review that says anything bad about this affordable CDRW. So I picked one (retail box)up from Newegg.com last week. Well, I am not really happy so far. Here is the story.

1. It comes with Nero Burning ver. 5.5.8 and InCD ver. 3.1x. Installed smoothely. But when I open up Nero, it shows only up to 32X CDR recording option. It is supposed to be 40X. Anything wrong with the hardware? Or Software? Do I need to install different software to fully utilize the drive? I am not sure if this is relevant, but I checked the firmware version, and it does have the lastest firmware (Z0K) as listed in Lite-On webpage.

2. Ok , let's move on from 32X/40X issue, because blank CDR's I currently have are rated only 24X. They are CompUSA brand 80 min 24X, 50 pack spindle, sold for $9.99. Well, guess what, this critically acclaimed Lite-On drive doesn't even burn the CD in 24X mode. It starts writing, but after a while it generates "write error" and stops. In fact, I continually stepped down the burning speed until it successfully writes something. 24X, failed, 20X failed, 16X failed, 12X failed, and finally, I was able to get a CDR written in 8X mode. I tried 8X a few more times and they were all successful. As soon as I go up 12X or higher, it fails. So, basically, I thought I bought 40X CDR writer but got 8X writer. Now my question is, is there something wrong with this new drive, or can I get it working properly with some tweaks?

3. InCD packet writing is not being done, either. Success rate for this simple task of formatting a CDRW is about 50 %. When it failed, it freezes up the computer so I need to reboot it. Even as a regular CD-Rom(rated 48X), it reads much slower than old Asus CDRom (40X).

My computer is not that powerful. Pentium II 350 Mhz in BX board. 256MB pc 133. Windows 2000 with service pack 2. DMA for all IDE channels are enabled. People in the know, please shed some light on my problem. Do I have to RMA this drive or is there anything I can do ? Thanks.

The newer LiteOns actually have a database of CD-R's in the firmware to determine the safest max writing speed for different brands. So it "knows" that the max speed you can safely write those CompUSA's is 32X.

As for the 8X problem, do what the man said: turn off Smart Burn.
