Lite-On 163D DVD Question (Regional code thing)

Just installed this new DVD, threw in "Final Fantasy DVD" and PowerDVD game message basically saying that "DVD player already region locked, error can't play DVD because of different region thing".

Thing is the disc is Region 1, and I'm assuming the DVD player is region 1 also - so why the error? Any how, I found a program to turn of the regional detection on the drive, and now the disc plays? I've searched on this topic and I just get more confused, perhaps somebody can't point me in the right direction?

DVD players have region settings. This is to avoid piracy. The player setting and the DVD region code has to be the same for you to be able to see the DVD. You can change the region settings only 5 times. So don't keep changing them. I believe when you got your DVD rom it must had a region setting as something other than north America. That is why you got that message. The program set your DVD rom seeting back to North America. So you are able to see the DVD.

inqztive: Thanks, I knew that DVD players have region settings and discs also. On another system I ran into the same problem with a different drive and a different DVD - I tried another DVD and it worked, then it game me the opportunity (that 5 times thing) to set my regional code on the player. This time however, It didn't give me the opportunity to set the regional code on the player, and I couldn't find it in the program? I then just turned it off with a little program I found to disable the check. So do you think I receieved a Lite-On DVD player that was set for ASIA region or something? I don't want to 'lock' the player on some other setting, dont' feel like ordering my DVDs from Japan, ya know?

Tada!

your new Lite-On DVD 163D Region Free for life... no bios flashing required.

A RPC-1 utility is available. This utility can RESET or turn ON/OFF the RPC mode. When the RPC is turned OFF, the drive will became a RPC-1 drive.

If your drive has GHR2 / GHR3 / GH4F/ GH4N / GH4S / GH4W / GH5E / GH5K Firmware use This One

To find out what Firmware your drive has try: This ID Tool

And different versions of Liteon Firmware can be found here

I have used this utility a ton! It's great.. easy to follow instructions are included and I've never had a single problem with it.. I have tons of DVD's from all regions and I can't stand region locking.. ugh. Thought I was in hell til I found this utility

DO NOT USE THAT RPC-1 UTILITY ON A LTD-163 DRIVE!!!!!!! Ive use it on a few drives and it works fine, however when I used it on my LTD-163 it wouldnt read ANY DVDs OR CDs!!!

<< I then just turned it off with a little program I found to disable the check >>

VTrider, what program is that? Have a link? Is it the same one ripthesystem is talking about?

About your issue, have you tried another software like WinDVD to play your movie? Does it give you the same error?

wow.. that sux Dulanic
I've used it on several of the 163D DVD-ROMS on various machines/setups.. never once had a problem. You do have to drop to DOS to run the utility- not supposed to run it from a Command Prompt IN windows - sorry to hear your luck though. Did you try to flash your BIOS? Does the drive show up in windows Devices?

Wow, ripthesystem thanks so much for all that info and links! ubersam, RPC-1 is the program that I used, the same one ripthesystem is talking about. Dulanic - sorry to hear your unfortunate situation, gave me the chills too, but I just check the DVD ROM with other CDs and it doesn't show any problems with my setup. I went to flash the BIOS first, but I guess I had the most up-to-date BIOS it told me, so I just ran the RPC-1 little proggie and now everything works. Man, that region setting stuff is one major pain in the arse. I'm still curious why I had to do this? I mean if somebody else bought this and didn't bother to find this info too or find it himself/herself - what would that person think? Probably that the drive is defective and return it I guess?

I assume that all the DVD ROM players that are sold in the US are region-1, why then does it seem that I had a non-region-1 DVD ROM? Oh well, it works now and that's all that matters (it's still buggin me though, I need to know why :Q )

Thanks everyone! 🙂

Hmmmm well I used it with a DOS bootdisk since Im using XP, Id never use command prompt 😛 And I couldnt reflash the bios, Lite-on doesnt allow you to flash the BIOS on it unless its a newer version... I had the newest. And yes it did show up in device manager my computer etc... just wouldnt read anything. I got the drive replace through waranty 😛

VTrider..
glad it worked for you.. how did you start in DOS & what OS are you in?
Just looking to avoid problems in the future.

BTW I had the same prob with my liteon when I first started with the region error code message.. fixed easily enough but I was curious abou that too..
ripthesystem

Ripthesystem: Yeah, I started in DOS - startup disk, running Win98SE. I have another system running XP, I should've tried it in there before I ran the region unlock program to see if I woudl experience the same problem, my guess is that I probably would.
