This is probably the biggest reason people do not eat healthy.
For example I bought the ingredients to make some chicken soup.

Carrots $2
Celery $2
Chicken $4
Onions $2
Noodles $2
Herbs and spices $2
--------------------
total $14

Not counting the time to make it. A can of soup is $2 and the same amount equal to what I can make myself would cost $6

I'm sure you can make a TON of soup with all of that stuff...

I am probably one of the best shoppers you will find and those were the cheapest prices . Prices for fresh vegetables and fruits is ridiculous.

How many pounds of each of those ingredients did you get for those prices?

In a $0.99 can of Campbell's chicken noodle soup (which I'll admit I eat on occasion, it's tasty because it's loaded with salt, and it's convenient) and you'll have about 2oz of vegetables, 1oz of chicken, and 5oz of noodles. At the prices you quoted, you should have had several pounds of vegetables, to which the canned soup can't compare. Not to mention a pound of chicken, which is more meat than you'll find in a dozen cans of that soup.

That is why people eat junk. hrm 23 % increase in price vs .8% increase, which do you buy on a budget ?

Groceries have been getting more expensive... but I don't think cost is the only thing that affects it. People still didn't eat healthy when things weren't so expensive.

They are ridiculous if you're buying the wrong ones. Only buy the stuff that's on-sale.

The problem with vegetables is they don't keep forever. It does no good to buy celery for soup two weeks from now.

People are not going to spend 3x what it cost for something they can buy off the shelf and then have to go home and make it themselves. It will never happen.

I think that to get people to eat healthy you have to make it very attractive . To the consumer they can't see the gain in paying $20 to make a pizza at home when the frozen one is $6. The health part doesn't enter into it because while it is important it doesn't have an immediate effect but the money spent does.

Yeah, the biggest problem with buying fresh ingredients is that you tend to have buy much more than you need for one person. I live by myself, I used to try to buy fresh stuff alot, but it kept going bad.

Now I eat mostly processed stuff and I never have to throw anything out.

Learn how to make other stuff then. You aren't just stuck making chicken soup. There are also ways to help keep vegetables fresher and some last longer than others anyway. e.g. wash and cut the celery after you buy it and keep it in a container with a little fresh water. Keeps much longer than if you just leave it on the stalks.

I know how to cook and keep things longer , I even can my own food, how many people still do that ? I buy things like tomatoes in 25lb boxes when in season and have a closet full of lots of jars of stuff. The point is people want two things, low prices and convenience and eating healthy doesn't provide that.

Are people really spending time bashing someone who is just talking about cooking their own fresh food and that it's not as easy or cheap as processed food?

They live in their parents' basements so the closest thing they do to grocery shopping or cooking is ordering a pizza when their parents are out for date night.

Yes, because some idiot always has to point out that people can't eat healthy because it's too expensive, and therefore it's McDonald's fault that people are fat. Those of who know better call that bullshit for what it is.

No strawman needed, people make that claim all the time. But if you want to be dishonest I'm not surprised. Typical for the big government goon squad around here.

Show us. Show us where people say fat people are McDonald's fault. I see people saying fast food places like McDonald's are part of the problem which is true. Wtf does big government have to do with this? That is dumb. Dumb and dishonest FTL.

The problem with fast food is the quality of ingredients are so poor they MUST jam it full of sugar, sodium and fat to give it any flavor. Otherwise it would taste like dog food.

You cant fix that as their customers demand cheap prices. They demand cheap prices because they are poor. They are poor generally because they are stupid, lazy and/or delt the wrong cards in life. They probably dont even floss every day let alone give a shit about fresh food.

The best thing to do is just freeze the leftovers, if you can. I have several bowls of chili, soups, and stews in my freezer ready to be stuck in the microwave at any time.

Doesn't work with everything, obviously, but it's something to consider.
