I received my bachelors in English, and read a fair amount novels. One of classes was the Rise of Realism, entailing an emphasis on Henry James. I must admit, before taking the class, I was not a big fan of Henry James, however, at the end of the semester, his style of storytelling, made an impression upon me. His novella, The Pupil actually had me blubbering.

There were a few great authors that I enjoyed, Stephen Crane and his ability to personify anything and his methods of emotional imagery were astounding. Too bad he died so young.

I am thinking F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby as a favorite... I do not think I have a ever read a more graceful opening in a book.

Post your favorite novel.

The first Vernor Vinge novel I read: A Fire Upon the Deep.
Or Stephenson's Snow Crash.
Or Richard Morgan's Altered Carbon.
Or Jeff Long's Year Zero or The Descent.

Probably the First Dark Tower novel.

really? i'd pick #2 or #3, i thought the first one was far too slow.

I dunno. I like them all alot (at least the first 4, after that it was alot of WTF) but its prose was much simplier, more concise. More like hemmingway than Dickens.

The Hobbit

was the first Tolkien I'd ever read, and got me hooked on reading for many years.
