list the common (or your) nvidia 780i mb problems?

what are some problems that you are experiencing with nvidia 780i motherboards or problems that are known to be common

i have a friend looking to step up from 680i and would like to know the lowdown

Why step up to the 780 and not the 790 ? The 780 is nothing more than the 680 + that dreadful nV200 PCI-E 2.0 bridge chip.

IMHO the nv200 is nothing but a lousy no-good-for-nothing latency multiplier. The 680 does not support PCI-E v2 and the nV200 is there to do just that. In addition to the horrible latencies that it creates it produces a lot of heat. With DDR3 prices going down I wouldn't suggest the 780 to anyone.

Well if you're not going to read his post, I wouldn't recommend your advice to anyone.

The guy already has DDR2 memory, CPU, and presumably an SLI setup. His motherboard died, he needs to replace it, and is looking for an upgrade.



I've heard good things about the EVGA 750i FTW motherboard, haven't heard anything good about 780i or 790i.

The 780 is plagued by a whole lot of issues. If your friend needs a cost effective SLI rig there're some good boards out there like ASROCK?s Penryn1600SLIX3-WiFi. This is a DDR2 680 board that supports all current penryn cpus

Yeah I'd tell your friend to go look at 750i boards- have not heard of the nvidia specific issues coming from them and they're still good boards.

Another vote for 750i. As Blazer said, the 780i is nothing but 680i with a bridge chip, so it retained all the issues that 680i has - vdroop being the biggest one.

I've been lucky with my Abit IN9 Max board as it's been running great for me. I tried Striker II and it posted grand total of one time for me...
