The Lovely Bones 8/10 - I really, really liked this one. The only parts that I didn't care for were the "acid trip" afterlife scenes, but other than that I was glued the entire way through, never getting bored.

Youth in Revolt 6.5/10 - While this was a fun movie to watch, Cera's portrayal of the bumbling nerd got boring after Superbad...or Juno...or Nick and Norah's....you get the point. It was still fun to watch, and the trouble he got into was interesting to follow. The ending was pretty good, but the characters seemed weak and personalities forced.

That's too bad, I was kind of looking forward to this as a funny sort of Japanese slapstick, or parody film. Sounds like I should not even bother. :\

KT
The problem is that you could not honestly tell if it was a parody/slapstick or if this was an honest film of some bizarre genre.

I saw it a while back, the unedited version. And while I admit its a mind blowing film from a sex/nudity standpoint, its not really a good film in any way. Even for the mid 70's it was pretty bad. Which is a shame when you consider all the work that went into it. (I watched the special features.)
If it hadnt been for the sex and a handful of big actors it would have been completely ignored.

On the flip side:
The Girl Next Door
Nothing special in the way of set design or costume or anything else, just superb acting and a really dark story. Its actually a very well made film but most folks wont be able to handle the material and would likely write it off as trash. Truth be told, its not nearly as intense as some other flicks I've seen, so adventurous people should check it out.
If you can handle Hard Candy you can probably sit through this. And there is a slightly more positive tone when it ends.

Wish I could rate it, but its the kind of movie you actually have to see to believe.

If anyone thinks The Girl Next Door is bad you should try Martyrs ! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1029234/

...man what a depressing movie.

It was pretty good but I wish I knew what happen before. They did explain a little but I want to know! It was interesting how they talked about death though a lot.

The Lovely Bones - 3.5/10: Wow, what a disappointment. Now, I've never read the novel, but this film is so disjointed, it really seems to not have a clue what it wants to be. There are all these elements of various styles of movies, but none of them come through and take over, so you are left with a muddled mess of a movie. As I was watching I actually thought to myself that the movie would be so much better if the entire supernatural element was completely removed, it really did not seem to serve any real purpose and even brought in an annoying character with a horribly inconsistent accent and one of the cheesiest sappiest parts of the movie. There were a few good, tense scenes, all involving the highlight of the film Stanley Tucci, but aside from those parts it was not good at all. In fact this movie almost makes me angry the more I think about it, considering how much I was looking forward to a new Peter Jackson film. Arrggghh. Oh yeah, the music was horrendous as well. Arrggghh again.

I'm Not Scared (Io non ho paura) - 7.5/10
: An Italian thriller shown from the perspective of a young boy that uncovers something sinister and how he deals with the repercussions that come about from that discovery. I really enjoyed how this was done. I felt for the kid and everything that went on and a lot of that had to do with how it was shot. It was a beautiful looking film and apparently, because it was focused on kids, the director shot everything at their height. I was really roped in and enjoyed most everything, aside from a couple of specific scenes relating to things I would not want to reveal here. Overall good stuff though.

KT

I'm Not Scared (Io non ho paura) is awesome! I remember first watching it a few years ago and really surprised how good it was! Top notch Drama/Mystery/Thriller! Glad you are enjoying the same type of films I like as well.

I think that's part of the point. The source of the cataclysm was unimportant, it's the struggle and relationship that mattered. Nonetheless, it was heavily implied that it was either nuclear or a meteor because there are references to bright light in the sky, a series of resulting quakes, and clocks stopping due to the electromagnetic results of the event.

Yeah you may be right still there was a lot of unanswered questions but sometimes that is good. It wasn't a bad film by far. Some of the stuff was quite terrifying. It may be really like that one day if something that bad happens.

Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade - 5/10: I just could not get into this. It's a Japanese anime movie about a traumatized special forces guy who falls for the sister of a girl he watched die. This is a pretty slow film, more about the guy and what he is dealing with and the relationship he is developing with the sister. I think I may have liked this if it had real actors, but it's hard for me to connect with the chracters in anime, so when it is trying to rope me into a relationship film, it's always going to fail.

The Last Man On Earth - 6/10: Vincent Price plays Dr. Robert Morgan, the last man on Earth after a plague consumes the world, turning everyone into vampire-like undead. This is of course the original film, based off the I Am Legend novel, which led to the Omega Man and I Am Legend movies. I like this film overall, but there is a lot stuff that almost had me laughing and while I tried to watch it with an eye that was aware of how audiences would have felt back when it was released, but I can't imagine anyone finding the undead scary in anyway. This got me to thinking maybe that is not the point, that the point is more the loneliness of Morgan (there are definitely a lot of things that point to that) but if you are not scared of the vampires, then it does not really work. Having that one guy moaning "MOOORRRGANN" outside of his was hilarious and watching Price fight off the Vampires or even kill them with the stakes was awkward since he seems to not have any strength whatsoever. The setting was supposed to be an American city, but it definitely looked like Italy and there were a couple of scenes that were horrible edited. As I said, I liked it overall, but it came across as silly so often that I could not rate it higher. By the way if you are going to watch this, please watch the restored black & white version; I put the colourized version on for a few minutes after I had watched the film in B&W (this disc had both versions) and it looked ridiculous.

I am Legend - 7/10

Overall thought it was pretty good. There were a couple parts I didn't get, like why he shot up that mannequin? Followed by why did he have to drag himself fifty feet after getting out of that trap, then he was suddenly able to get up and into his car? Followed by how that zombie dude was able to construct such a sophisticated trap while also choosing to bash through the bulletproof glass with his head at the end instead of using something else?

I really did want to like it more, but I just couldn't. :( It's not like I do not enjoy old sci-fi movies since the original The Day The Earth Stood Still is one of my favourite Sci-fi movies and that is even older. I just could not get into this one as much. Maybe I will need to re-watch it.

Could just be a matter of taste ....

I happen to really like the Vincent Price version of Last man on Earth, I think even better than the Heston version.... But I could understand it not suiting a lot of people's taste. Note: I didn't try to watch a colorized version of it, as colorized B&W pretty much always looks bad, but if I did, I'm sure it wouldn't help my opinion either ...

The Hangover - 7/10

I really wanted to give this an 8/10, but holy crap did Jeong - and in general, the scenes with the "Asians" - bring this movie down. Anytime he was on screen I cringed. If I had selective memory I could block it out, but my god, what a way to ruin what was a decent movie. Otherwise, pretty funny throughout.

Paranormal Activity - 8/10: I wanted to punch Micah in the face after 5 minutes of him being on-screen. His general douchebaggery escalated this disdain to the point where I actually cheered when finally
he was eviscerated by the demon-possessed Katie
. Otherwise, I liked it. I think this would follow the actual course of a true haunting (if they happen), not those like you see in regular shows / movies. It wasn't an over-the-top scare fest, just enough to keep you unnerved until the ultimate end.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs - 2/10: The graphics and effects were great, but I could not get into the story at all. Even my wife (a die-hard Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks animation junkie) could not watch this past 30 - 40 minutes (the Jell-O mansion). The only reason I gave it higher than 0/10 was because Steve the Talking Monkey was an awesome sidekick.

Drag me to Hell - 4/10: I hate when I know everything that will happen in a movie before it happens. This was one of those movies. For the story it told, though, it did so pretty well. Also LOL'd seeing the Mac guy (Justin Long) being unable to repair his printer (I think he was just going to buy a new one) then his girlfriend fixes it in two seconds by looking at it and removing an errant paperclip. He's a Mac, alright.

Red Dwarf - 10/10: This is probably the best recent BBC TV series after Doctor Who and Top Gear. It's a blend of Star Trek, The Omega Man, and Animal House. This comedy centers around Dave Lister, the last man in the Universe after being in suspended animation for 3 million years due to a contamination that wiped out the other crew members. He is joined by a Hologram of his 'friend' Arnold Rimmer, a creature that evolved from Lister's cat (simply named 'Cat'), and (later on) an android named Kryten. The epsiodes revolve around their exploits to return to Earth. All 9 parts (6 30 min. episodes each) are available via Netflix instant streaming.

The Invention of Lying - 1 / 10. Awful movie that took a decent idea, ruined it, and then dragged it through
a cliched, boring, and pithy exploration of religion. Even before it got to the idiotic "critique" of religion this movie failed so hard. Since when does not lying mean just spouting whatever is on your mind at any time without any reason?
This movie sucked and Ricky Gervais should be ashamed he stuck his name on this pile of shit.

Every Ricky Gervais movie where he is a central character has been shit.

The dude is not funny, except for in The Office. He's another Michael Cera who always plays the same annoying character in every movie he is in. Even in Stardust he was the same fucking annoying douchebag.

Spaced (UK TV series) - 9/10 - Awesome show! Its not consistently hilarious, but its pretty funny throughout.

I didn't realize it until late in the 2nd (and last) season that the character, Mike, is Nick Frost, Simon Pegg's movie buddy. I don't usually look at credits and I thought it sort of looked like him, but was so completely different than he looks now.

I also didn't realize until that Brian is Mark Heap, who played Dr. Alan Statham in Green Wing. He started talking like Alan Statham and I was like, "is that the same guy?" looked it up and it was. He looks completely different too.

Predator - 6/10 Get to the chopper! Pretty decent classic action movie. Tough to rate it much higher because 80's movies are pretty bad in general.

Revolutionary Road - 6/10 Got into it, believed the characters, just really didn't care much how bad their lives sucked. Loved the neighbor's son though, the crazy math genius.

Smart People - 5/10 Eh, there never really seemed like much of a point to get at until the very end. The daughter was annoying, the son wasn't interesting, the brother was pretty good though.

Wargames - 7/10 Pretty classic movie. A little goofy at a few points, but definitely entertaining.

Evil Dead - 3/10 Wow this movie was bad. Just straight up not great. I was barely able to stomach through the movie. Only saving grace was some of the hilarious "gore" scenes.

District 9 - 8/10 Pretty darn good movie. Definitely not was I was expecting the movie to be like that. Some fun scenes with aliens. A few parts didn't make total sense, and you definitely wanted more at the end. Really liked the offbeat presentation though.

Clueless - 5/10 Watchable at least, for what it is.

An Inconvenient Truth - 7.5/10 - Unfortunately I don't think that Al Gore is going to be able to achieve what he so desperately wants to, which is to change the minds of people the world over one person at a time. The reason being that this has become such a polarizing issue that no matter how well presented the facts are and no matter who is presenting them you're mind is not going to be swayed if you already have it made. I must say however that this is an excellent presentation of the known facts on global warming so far. It boils the major scientific points down to easily understandable facts and displays the information in a hard to refute manner, if a bit too simplified. But unfortunately I must say that Al Gore is not the right person to be presenting this. He's too polarizing a figure. Too political, and somewhat too self centred. That's not an argument to stay away from the film however as it's one of the better documentaries out there, sadly one of the only, on the issue of global warming and does a good job of hammering home just how dire an issue this really is.

Hell yea Wargames is awesome.

Yea I thought Evil Dead 1 was weak. It was extremely slow. Part 2 was infinitely better.
