Black Swan - 9.5/10: Sorry zin, this was fucking awesome. :awe: We both let out audible "wow"s right after it ended. Granted, our viewing experience was much, much better than yours (we went to an old school theatre with a balcony and sat right in the middle of the balcony, with only about 10 other people in there). I think Portman's issues were fascinating in how they manifested themselves,
I mean it pretty much turned into a horror movie, which was great for me; I was actually reminded of Cronenberg's The Fly a lot (pulling at fingernails, funny hair-like things on her back).
I really connected with her right from the very beginning and rooted for her along the way and I was actually so involved in it I wanted her to succeed, no matter the cost, much like the character herself. Anyway, kind of rambling because I just got back from the theatre, but yeah, easily in my top 10 for the year. Loved Cassel and Hershey (Ryder was good in her brief appearances too) but I agree with Kunis, though she was insanely freaking hot in that one scene (you know which one I mean :sneaky: ). Now to get that damn Swan Lake song out of my head...

KT

Must see this. I'm definitely an Aronofsky fan, though I don't love everything he does.

Haha, yeah, that would be annoying. Stadium generally does suck; honestly, watching it in the theatre we did almost made it feel like we were watching a live performance. I freaking love that theatre. :awe:

Hopefully you'll get a chance to re-visit the film at a later date in more favourable conditions. I assume you saw it with your gf; what did she think?

KT

she liked it quite a bit. Surprised that she was able to follow it better than I, though, as she's generally more sensitive to such overwhelming visual and audio stimulus

Yep, I'm the same. I rate GF1 around an 8.5 or 9, but I'd rate GF2 pretty damn close to a 10. Been a few years since I last watched them, but I keep meaning to since I bought the Copolla Restoration Blu-rays. Maybe over the Xmas holidays.

KT

I tend to give GF II an 11, with I at a 9 or 9.5. :D

Godfather I is amazing, II is simply superlative.

Haha, nice! GF II has always been my favourite, since I was a kid. I bought the Coppola Restoration Blus a few months ago, but I still have not had a chance to watch them. Need to get around to doing that. :hmm:

Well, the netflix instant streaming novelty has worn off and I've slowed down big time. I have watched a few things recently...

Without the King - 6.5/10
The nextflix description sums up the movie well.

documentary about Swaziland's ruling family -- the last absolute monarchy on the African continent -- King Mswati III faces myriad challenges as he governs a troubled, poverty- and AIDS-stricken country where the average life expectancy is 31 years. The film contrasts the royal family's lavish lifestyle with the meager existence of most of Swaziland's people, whose discontent has created the seeds of a revolutionary movement.

It was somewhat interesting, I knew nothing about the topic previously. The documentary is nothing special in regards to it's production. The one thing I came away from the movie with was anger that this fucking guy controls about $10 billion...Supposedly it's the country's money but it is in his name, and forbes lists him worth $100 million regardless. A lottery winner is more deserving than this guy lol

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York - 8/10
Haven't seen this in a while. I loveee the first one, and my gf wanted to rewatch them both the other day, but only this was available to stream. This one is still really funny, though not as much as the first.

The Toy - 6/10
Richard Pryor and Jackie Gleason. The kid in this was really good. But I didn't really like this movie. Wasn't that funny and the plot wasn't very good.

Did I mention I watched the first episode of Damages? I think I may have mentioned I started it and didn't finish? Anyway, more of the same, very predictable, and very cliche. Painfully so, ugh. Netflix guesses I would rate it a 4.9! I'm not easy with my ratings either, I don't get it. Maybe it gets better?

Also been watching the new episodes of Psych. Pretty short break since it was last on, but these new episodes have been really good, with special guests and interesting scenarios. Very funny show if you haven't seen it.

Zombie Strippers - (1/10) - Watched this because it was in a zombie movie thread here at Anandtech. Well, I watched about 15 minutes. It was pretty stupid so I quit.

Exit Through the Gift Shop - (8/10) - It was an interesting documentary about street art. It actually is more about the evolution of one guy who went from clothing store owner slash filming OCD man to pseudo documentary maker to for profit street artist. I love it because in the end, it really shows how fake people are that spend alot of money on art. Even at the start of the movie, the person who is the focus of the film points out how stupid designer clothing is. He laughed that he could buy $50 in defect clothing and sell it as designer clothing for $5,000 (in L.A.). I think actual artists get it, but people that spend tens of thousands are just glorified post card collectors. Anyways, I found it VERY interesting and it actually gets better as the story goes on. Apparently some big names from the graffiti world are in it. The director is Banksy who is apparently among the top street artists in the world. It was funny. He was doing stuff as an artist many years ago before street art commanded high prices. Then some idiot paid half a million for a telephone booth that Banksy modified. Ya, remember those glorified post card collectors?

The other day someone was asking me what my favourite films of 2010 were so far and this was definitely in there. Whether it's completely real or not, I don't care, it was fascinating.

Ya, it really is a must see. You don't have to be into art to appreciate the documentary. I actually was enthralled for most of the movie and I found myself laughing at some points.

Just rewatched Apollo 13. Such a great movie. I hope at some point in my lifetime travel to other planets becomes possible.

Got done watching Zodiac (2007). Pretty good. It felt really long, but I liked it. I was an hour in and it felt like an eternity already, but I enjoyed that.

Watching Little Children right now. Not sure if I am gonna enjoy this... :\

Saw Tangled yesterday with my 3.5 year old girl and 6 year old boy and wife. We all thought it was very good. I would even say that it was better than Toy Story 3. In Tangled, the character development was excleent and you cared about the them.

Anyways, awesome date movie. I am going there. Also, kids will love it.

Got done watching Little Children. It was alright. (Spoiler) I had high hopes for the potential chomo, but he obviously was just fucked in the head I guess. I thought he was a good guy being framed as bad with just a one bad act, but nope... total potential chomo.

Anyway, movie was alright. DEFINITELY started out much better. First hour of this movie was pretty good or whatever, but it started really cranking out really slow and it just felt kinda boring at some parts.

The Town. I sually like movies based around and about Boston and it's neighborhoods but this movie was fucking stupid...Yeah I know it was an Affleck vehicle but I thought it being about the Boston area would have made it at least interesting...it wasn't. It definitly was no Gone Baby Gone.

Still haven't updated.

cool, I just added this a few days ago as I've read several articles on Banksy over the years. I don't give a rat's ass about street art, honestly, but the dude is somewhat fascinating. Also, his highly guarded secrecy made me want to watch this, assuming it's the first time he has allowed his image photographed? maybe not.

are you sure he directed this? I thought it was some other documentarian that was allowed to follow Banksy around.

Ha, I gave it about 10 minutes. There are times when I am 'in the mood' to watch this sort of thing, but there is never a time when my GF would be in that mood.

I have not yet revisited this one. :hmm:

Dont ever let her know you've watched it. Dont even let her know it exists. I am not a big fan of lying to women but this is definitely one of those times.

Spoiler tags because the documentary really does tell this. It is really the timeline progression of the film and I don't want to ruin it. You really should avoid the spoiler tags, but yes, Bansky directed it ven though I don't think he wanted to. He had to.

The documentary actually explains the progression. Some guy who is a bit whacky would video tape everything.
Never watch the tapes and just colelct them. He stumbled upon street art and started filming it as a hobby. He told the artists that he was doing a documentary which was a lie. Eventually, Bansky or someone told him that it is time for him to stop taping and get the documentary together. And he did. IT SUCKED. They actualyl showed a minute of it. So, Banksy who never did a documntary and didn't even know how to do one demanded that he be given the tapes to do the documentary.
That's how Bansky ended up doing this documentary. He did a good job.

Stardust - 10/10 I loved this movie from beginning to end. I can describe this movie in one word: charming. It's akin to The Princess Bride, so if you like one you'll probably like the other. I personally like Stardust more.
