Shutter Island (8/10) - I like it because it stimulated the mind and had interesting surprisingly twists.

Inception (8/10) - Also liked because it was thought provoking and a neat new concept (for me at least)

A Prophet (9/10) - Very fun movie to watch - like a rags to riches story for a criminal - sorta in some ways like Scarface in prison

I missed a few things

Midnight Run - 7.5/10
De Niro as a bounty hunter goes to find a white collar criminal who stole from some mobsters. There are some laughs, and the story is pretty good for a movie like this. I liked it

The Return of the Pink Panther - 8/10
I've only seen short clips here and there of these movies in the past. This is a funny movie. Dumb in parts, but that's part of the charm. Of course, you have to like this kind of humor.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Final Sacrifice
I haven't finished watching this yet. This is my first MST3K movie I'm watching. It is basically funny commentary over stupid movies. It's actually pretty good. Not as good as the 4.8 netflix guessed, but I like it

Rashomon
I haven't finished this one either. Released in 1950. There is a rape and murder, but the people involved/witnesses are all telling different stories of the events. I can imagine this was pretty amazing when it first came out. The themes certainly hold up till today, not sure if I love it too much as a movie though. We'll see what happens when I get around to finishing it

MST3K is awesome. Be sure to watch Laser Blast.

Just watched Kick-Ass last night and was surprisingly not awful. Though I didn't like the little girl her face was lopsided or something. Also the lead actor was annoying. But it deserves a good 6.3/10

Got The Nightmare Before Christmas lined up for this evening.

Best Worst Movie: 8.5/10

This movie is a documentary about the "worst movie of all time" Troll 2. Basically a bunch of no name actors made this movie 17 years ago and it develops a cult following. The main actor it follows, George Hardy, is an awesome character and it is pretty funny to see his reactions to the cult status of his movie. Im a sucker for documentaries and i thought his was very well done

Pandorum - 8/10

Finally got around to seeing this one. While the overall movie was a great version of the 'lost somewhere in space' concept, I was a little disappointed with the Hunter creatures. The film hinted that
(I think) they were some kind of genetic accident from all the 'Ark' DNA samples intermingling, but kind of just left it at that
. Otherwise, the character and plot development were pretty good
as was the 'twist' concerning Payton / Gallo
. I'm going to be keeping an eye out for this on Bluray. Like District 9, people either love or hate this movie. I think it does a good enough job separating itself from Event Horizon and all the Mars movies from a few years ago that it's worth watching at least a few times.

I picked it up at Best Buy maybe 2 months ago for $10 .... dunno if it's gone up since then ... very fun movie!

Hearts Afire - 5/10:

Meh. John Ritter and Markie Post are awesome, but the show just proves that good actors still need good writers to back them up. Also, not enough Billy Bob Thornton.
Every character is a horribly stereotypical and annoying. Most all of the plots are stereotyped as well. You'd think a show about a senators aide would be so much better, but they spend most of their time in the living room like a standard lame family sitcom.
Between the actors and setting this had tons of potential, and it was all wasted.

The Men Who Stare At Goats - 5 / 10

Was so so, but I just really didn't give two shits about the characters or the story.

Hot Tub Time Machine - 6 / 10

Pretty comical but nothing that epic.

Up in the Air - 7 / 10

Pretty decent movie. Love Clooney's character and loved how the movie turned out.

I.O.U.S.A - 6 / 10

Decent enough documentary, but I'm usually pretty weary of any documentary.

Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence - 6/10: Quite an odd film and one I am still sort of conflicted on. It's from 1983 and stars David Bowie and Tom Conti as British soldiers in a Japanese POW camp; the POWs are looked down upon by their Japanese captors due to the fact they surrendered and there is constant struggle between the two because of it. Conti plays Lawrence and he struggles to keep the peace as the liaison between the two camps, but things are inflamed even more when Bowie arrives. I liked parts of theis movie a lot; the struggle between the Japanese and British ideals and the relationship between Lawrence and Japanese. However, there are also a lot of odd, disjointed scenes (some very harsh, abrupt cuts in the film too where you think a scene is going to continue, then it just stops and moves on to something else). Bowie was actually quite good in this and Conti was very good as long as he was not being angry (the scenes where he was shouting were pretty bad) but I did have a tough time with some of the Japanese accents since they were all Japanese actors speaking very stunted English. Anyway, it ended up pretty middle of the road for me. Cool note though, the guy that played Zatoichi in The Blind Swordsman film from a few years back is one of the main Japanese Soldiers in this; I liked him a lotmore in Zatoichi, but it was cool to see him here much younger.

Got the silent Buster Keaton double-header Blu-ray yesterday:

Sherlock Jr. (1924) - 9/10: Keaton plays a young man that works in a movie theatre, but is also an aspiring detective; he ends up accused of stealing his girlfriend's Father's watch and the rest of the film is about resolving this. I thought this was awesome; it was very clever in how it was all presented and resolved and Keaton was freaking hilariously awesome. I was actually quite amazed by a few of the shots in this (a couple of the shots when Keaton is riding on the front of the bike were great) and the physical comedy was awesome. Had a lot of fun with this one and I'll watch it again soon; it's only 45 minutes too, but felt like 15.

Three Ages (1923) - 6.5/10: A love story shown in three different ages (Stone, Roman, and Modern). I actually found this one a bit boruing in parts, probably due to the fact it is very repetitive as the stories are identical, they just make use of different comedic elements applicable to the different areas. I enjoyed some of the parts from the Roman age in-particular, but even though this is only about an hour long, it felt longer and was definitely the weaker of the to films on the disc.

The Good, The Bad, The Weird 2008
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0901487/
8/10

I was not expecting much when I put this on, but it blew away my expectations.
Korean film, borrows a lot from The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly however, it doesn't share the same story, just some of the events happen to be the same.
Set in 1940s Manchuria. This is a western/adventure film
Technical production is great, actors are very good, stunts are awesome.

The story is a bit stupid at times, but, it such a fun movie that a dumb plot can't keep it down!

Oooh ... Classic films! I haven't seen either of these yet but Sherlock Jr is now on my "want to see" list :)

I just watched the lost tribe, it was absolutely terrible

the movie went on entirely too long and was just so bad.

We just get random movies to watch (netflix) and yeah... I regret that one.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice...

8/10

Maybe I was just in the mood for entertaining silliness, but wife and I watched this cuddled up in bed over the weekend, and I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Not gonna get any Oscars, and the geeky star gets annoying at times, but I thought the movie was fun from start to end.

Seven Samurai: 9/10 - Fantastic movie. I really enjoyed the characters and story. The film has really held up over the years.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time: 7/10 - Fun movie with lots of action. Too bad Disney was involved because it could have been even better if it wasn't dumbed down and cleaned up for family viewing.

Predators: 8.5/10 - Another fun action movie. Some great characters in this movie, and a lot of non-stop action. well worth a viewing if yo uare a fan of the Predator series.

Burn After Reading: 5/10 - I guess I was expecting a lot more from this movie. It was funny at times, but other times it seemed to drag on. John Malkovich was great as usual. Clooney had a few good moments. The other actors I didn't connect with and got bored.

The Expendables - 6/10 - Needed subtitles for most of the characters. Some good parts to the movie, some stupid ones. One thing I didnt like was how some of the violence would be pretty graphic, like
during the opening action sequence on the boat
, but then later it would be like PG-13 violence with a gunshot, but no blood. Overall I enjoyed it for what it was, but thought it was still disappointing.

Agreed 100% about Seven Samurai, tis one of my all time favorites.

Haven't seen Predators here yet, but I loved the 1st predator movie, and tolerated the second one pretty well. Also enjoyed AVP, though not to the same extent. Looking forward to eventually reaching predators in my netflix queue ... or ... perhaps they will stream it in the future ... (one can hope)

I think it could have used a bit of editing, cut out redundant parts and it could have been a solid action flick. some of the actions scenes got a bit tiresome because its stuff you've already seen before and the characters have already been established.

I think you will really like Predators. I would rank it second to only the original Predator and ahead of the others in the series. Rodriguez did a fantastic job and really brought the series back to life. There is also talk of a sequel and I can't wait to see it.

Repo Men - 8/10: Wow, I liked this way, way more than I expected. I watched the unrated version and loved the over-the-top violence, the wry humour and the hole-riddled story. In a lot of ways this felt like a Verhoeven movie; ridiculous and violent but most importantly, fun. There was a great scene in a hallway that was like a combo of Oldboy and The Matrix; I actually clapped at the end of that. Yeah sure, it's kind of dumb and there are a million freaking plotholes, but I had a lot of fun with it.

Lake Of Fire - 10/10: Simply amazing. A documentary from 2006 on the abortion debate, showing both sides of the debate, including the zealots and the reasonable-minded individuals from both camps. It's amazing to me all of the hypocrisy on both sides of the argument, but this film just lays it all out there for you to digest. There are some very graphic scenes, so be forewarned if you plan on watching this, but it is absolutely a spectacular, fascinating documentary and well worth watching by anyone that has ever thought about or discussed this issue. I could go on about this one for a long time, but suffice to see it is an outstanding documentary.

Paths Of Glory - 9/10: Kubrick's 1957 film about some soldier's put on trial for not essentially committing suicide by following orders and retreating from an attack. Surprisingly short, but quite a poignant film about the lengths those in power will go to save face. Kirk Douglas was great as the Colonel trying to save the lives of his soldiers, but running into the ridiculous bureaucracy in the French army. That was something that threw me off at first; this was supposed to be the French army, but everyone just talked as they normally did and I kept losing sight of the fact they were supposed to be French. It's not really all that important, but it just struck me as a bit odd. Anyway, pretty great film!
