I thought this one was just a cash in on the first one's success. Wasn't much substance, no character development, and even the action scenes fell short. I felt this movie could have been fit into less than an hour if they wanted to. Johansson was hot but I could have just gotten the same rise from a movie still of her. Her character was bland.

I think you're expecting too much from a popcorn flick. Unquestionably its a cash-in. What sequel isn't? Could it have been more in-depth? more gritty? more "adult"? sure. But you can't sell Happy Meals with that then. They have to make these types of movies appeal to the largest swath of viewers and to do that, things like character development, and deep plots have to go out the window. Mindless, senseless stupid action? THAT is the summer popcorn flick. Iron Man 2 hit that full stride.

Zombieland 8/10
Absolutely the definition of a man-flick: zombies, hot girls, action, comedy and BillMurray. If you go into it expecting a Bruce Campbell-esque film (but with more $$ spent) you won't be disappointed.

via netflix streaming right now!

Insomnia (2002) 8/10
Intricate plots are Nolan's forte and this one delivers. Al Pacino had his typical over the top acting in the beginning and didn't really fit in well with his surrounding cast but later on as his sleep depravation started settling in his performance started getting much better. Goes to show how much quality can be had just from doing less. From his line of work, Robin Williams is a very underrated actor as he was very believable as a super intelligent creep that he is portrayed to be in this film.

On a side note, if you look at theatrical trailer that is in the extras for this film, I couldn't help but laugh at how much it strays from the actual material. The actual film is 1billionX better than what the trailer suggests as to the plot.

The same can be said for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. But that was a horrible, horrible film.

Crimes and Misdemeanors - 8/10
Classic Woddy Allen. Very good all around. No need to say more

World's Greatest Dad - 8/10
Dark comedy starring Robin Williams. I don't want to really talk about the plot, don't want to give anything away. But anyway, it was very funny and I liked the themes of the movie.

Law Abiding Citizen - 3/10: This movie kind of drove me nuts. I thought Foxx and Butler were both pretty terrible; Foxx was overacting and Butler was just not acting at all (where is that guy from? His accent kept coming through and it was distracting). The premise, while somewhat interesting (I'm a sucker for a good revenge flick) became far too absurd and, which would be ok, but the way things unravelled were so obvious, it totally detracted from the rest of the setup of the film. Also, the ending was completely stupid. The writing is so poor you have no idea who to root for and some of the dialogue was painful to listen to. The best part in the whole movie
is when the judge is killed
; I laughed out loud at that because it was so awesomely unexpected. Aside from that scene, most everything else was a joke, but not a funny one.

Been wanting to see this one for a while, but it's hard to come by, or just very popular with my rental place here apparently. Directed by Bobcat Goldthwait surprisingly enough.

As much as you like movies / tv shows, I'd highly recommend it if you can get it. I just signed up not too long ago on the cheepest plan at $8.99 / mth. Between me & the family we've been streaming quite a lot.

We have a stripped down version up here with a very crappy selection, so I'm going to wait until it gets better.

I've heard the US now has 5.1 DTS (where available) and multiple subtitle options when necessary. That sounds enticing.

Defendor - 6/10

Yet another good Woody Harrelson movie. He plays an electric company worker who doubles as Defendor in his spare time, fighting his self-imposed nemesis Captain Industry (a Moldovian crime boss). This was a well played role by Woody, and Elias Koteas played his role as a drug cop very well. It was probably just me this week fighting off a cold, but I just couldn't get into this one that much. I wanted to see more of what pushed him to take on the mantle of Defendor, but ended the movie feeling a little left out on his development. Like I said though, it's probably the cold and the NyQuil retarding my brain. I'll probably watch this one again in the future.

Oh, that sucks.

Getting 5.1 DTS would be nice. I'm really liking that I can now search through the xbox.

Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (Fade to White version) 2005
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0310775/
10
I'd seen Lady Vengeance before a few years ago but since I've picked up the blu rays, I have just now seen the Fade to White version of the film.
This is without a doubt, the most powerful work that I've seen from Park. It is overwhelmingly exploding with grief, pain, suffering, sympathy and hatred. It doesn't have the action found in Oldboy, yet it completely stands its ground in terms of the emotional content.
Story 10/10
Cinematography 10/10 (at the same level as works by masters Kurosawa, Kubrick, and Jeunet)
It is majestic.

Spoiler
Towards the end, the scene with the orange marble with the rest of the film black and white almost had me in tears. Fade to White isn't "better" than the theatrical release, but it is absolutely worth watching.

Avatar - 8/10: predictable but still had me holding on for the ending. Not a CGI kind of guy - the whole thing actually played out like a video game - including the commander dude's lines and acting. It was at least different.

Hostel 2 - 6/10: at least it was a deeper horror flick than usual... but this being billed as more grotesque... didn't bug me one bit. The stuff in SAW like twisting arms till bones break.. that stuff kills me.
P.S. Needs hotter chicks.

Winter's Bone - D:/10
I really do not understand the appeal of this movie.
they're gonna take my house if daddy doesn't show. you better not go looking for him! Go see this person, and then see little aurthur and then thump but he won't see you but see him anyway. I told you not to go looking, what do we do now. they're gonna take my house if daddy doesn't show. Ok here are his arms, now you can keep the house and have some money. yay
I thought the plot was terrible and I didn't care about the characters at all. I didn't like the directing or the camera work. wtf was with the fat old cowboy dude with that leather jacket? that whole scene was just silly. I didn't get any feeling of tension or anticipation at all. I thought John Hawkes was good but no one else, including Jennifer Lawrence. There were maybe 5 minutes of the movie where I was interested, but I was so dissapointed in this

The Blair Witch Project: After 11 years and no ridiculous hype surrounding it and seeing it for the first time... It creeped the hell out of me. I'd give the first half a 5/10 for being very dull when they're interviewing all the people. However, the second half gets a 9/10. Shit the way they built up the scares kept getting better and better until the twisted ending. What a solid, genuinely scary experience.
