Get Him to The Greek - 5/10
Damn this was dissapointing. This movie was hyped up a decent amount and I really didn't think it was very good. There were a few funny parts here and there, but overall I thought it kinda sucked. The characters weren't very good and the plot was stupid. Too many songs too. I wish I didn't waste my time with this one.

I forgot to mention, p diddy is a pretty shitty actor. When this movie came out there was a ton of bullshit about how he was so great, blah blah blah. I thought he sucked in most of his scenes and he was a lame ass character.

Muhammad Ali: The Greatest, '64-'74 - 8/10: A very interesting look at the man, with essentially two parts. The black & white portion in '64 as Cassius Clay prepares for his big first fight with Sonny Liston, a fight where everyone was picking against him. It spends a lot of time showing behind the scenes preparation, including training, and the commissioners and agents trying to sort out rules, all of which is quite fascinating for a boxing fan like myself (no actual fight footage is shown). The next portion jumps ahead 10 years, with some details filled in along the way, to '74 (in colour) and follows Muhammad Ali as he prepares for The Rumble In The Jungle and all of his preparation for that, along with how the fight ended up there and even how he got his shot in the first place. If you are a boxing fan, or an Ali fan, this is great as it gives you quite a detailed look at the man and gets you a lot of interesting behind the scenes stuff. For others I' mo not sure they would be interested, but I really liked it.

Pulse (Kairo) - 3/10: Terrible Japanese horror/thriller about some university students that end up investigating the mysterious disappearances and suicides of various people after they have viewed a webcam site. The acting is terrible for the most part, though I liked the main sort of doofus guy, he was pretty funny, but the rest of the cast was quite awful. There was nothing scary and the overarching theme of loniless and separation from society were very weak and poorly executed. I'd heard good things about this one, but damn, I almost turned it off half way through.

Ghost World 9/10 - Wow... I can't believe I've never seen this movie. I saw Reservoir Dogs over the weekend (again) and I started looking for more Steve Buscemi movies. I noticed that Buscemi starred in this movie called "Ghost World", so I decided to rent it. This movie is a true gem. The performances by Thora Birch and Buscemi made this movie. Scarlett Johannson was in the movie as well, but she didn't shine as much as Birch. The story is very unique and truly entertaining.

Yeah, good movie. I have not seen it since the theatre; I should really re-visit it.

I know I'm a little behind but just watched The Breakfast Club and I'll give it a 8/10. Much more intellectually stimulating than I expected. Thumbs Up!

The Good The Bad The Weird - 7/10
Korean spaghetti western in the spirit of sergio leone's The Good The Bad The Ugly.
The presentation throughout was well done and it definitely had a cartoony/anime feel to the characters and scenes.

It was really a tale of two halves. Enjoyed the second half of the movie over the first. As it was a little bit more toned down and had more dialogue which really fleshed out the characters. The first half was too Michael Bay-esque with the constant shootouts and explosions and loud screaming. And maybe they were trying a little to hard to establish the evilness of the bad guy, I constantly found myself telling the tv "I get it already, lets move on".

But as usual, korean movies always suffer from a lack of editing. A little tweaks here and there it would have been a great movie, but this one really couldn't get past "fun ride". I'm sure it has something to do with culture as god forbid anybody was willing to say anything negative about what the director wanted to do. But that's just from personal experience with dealing with fellow koreans.

The Town - 8.8/10
Lol, they could have easily just called this Heat 2 or Heat(2010). Affleck doesn't seem to attempt to mislead and clearly shows many similarities to 1995 michael mann suspense flick. But Heat is awesome, and The Town is pretty good also. The action is good, story is good, dialogue is witty and funny in the few places it tries to be. Acting is alright, not great. I didn't like the women characters that much.

Could have rated it a 9 if it wasn't such a copy of Heat

Heh, I felt very similar.

Heat was superior due to the much more fleshed out and complex characters, particularly of the lead cop chasing the crew. In Heat Pacino was a complicated and compelling person, while in The Town, the lead FBI agent played by Jon Hamm was very flat and disposable. I don't think it was the actors fault, there just wasn't any space in the script for the character to be more than a cardboard cutout.

The other common comparison is to The Departed, but let's face it, Affleck is not Scorcese, and he didn't have that billion dollar cast to work with. The story wasn't a neatly dovetailing mix of betrayal and skullduggery.

All that said, I did quite enjoy it, and it was very well done for what it was. If you just think about the script alone, it could have been pretty bad in less capable hands, just another throwaway heist flick, but it executed what it had pretty well. Jeremy Renner really delivered here, he stole every scene he was in as a pretty dark but loyal individual. Without him the film could have easily been a 6/10.

Genre fans should love it, films of that quality rarely emerge in that genre. It's usually stuff like the much weaker but still watchable 'Takers'.

Metropolis (Robot Angel or Metoroporisu) - 7/10: This is sort of the Japanese anime version of the original 1920's sci-fi film of the same name, though this movie focuses more on the actual robotic female creation than all of the political strife, which almost feels secondary here, though of course she is a catalyst for a lot of it. Anyway, the animation style was a little odd to start, it almost felt like I was watching a Ralph Bakshi film, but I got used to it and some of the shots later on were actually quite amazing (the fish on the wall behind the superintendent's desk was quite stunning) and by the end I thought it looked pretty damn great. The story was ok, with some of it a bit convoluted unconvincing, but I liked it quite a bit and I enjoyed the Tima-Kenichi relationship (whenever Tima said his name it put a smile on my face). One of the more enjoyable anime experiences I've had.

The losers - 6/10: I started to give it a 5 but went ahead bumped it by a point. My wife liked it some what which means that there is something about it that's a bit above avg as she normally doesn't really care for action / guy movies.

Dexter - ?/?: Finally signed up for netflix & noticed it available for streaming. It took a bit but I got my wife to start watching it with me and we've already went through sessions 1 & 2, but it looks like we'll have to get the dvds by mail for the rest. Not sure what to rate it at but we are really liking it so far.

Yeah Metropolis is great. The apocalyptic ending to the tune of I can't stop loving you is really neat :)

Definitely a great ending, I liked that part quite a bit. The animation style was kind of odd in how some stuff like the backgrounds and landscapes looked amazing while the characters were sort of strange looking.

Anyway, pretty cool overall.

Paranormal Activity 2 - worst movie I saw this year. It was boring, not scary, and I almost fell asleep at several points during the movie.

The Town - 8/10: Most everything has been said already, so not much else to expand on, but I quite liked it. Affleck really seems to know what he is doing behind the camera and he's two for two now in my books (I loved Gone Baby Gone, probably more than this film). I was also very pleasantly surprised with Affleck's acting since I can't recall the last time he was decent in anything, maybe Chasing Amy? Anyway he and Renner were both excellent and I'm also a pretty big fan of Rebecca Hall. Fun action, good heart, and a fun ride overall.

Yeah, it is kind of heavy, but it's very good and overall the better film in my opinion.

The Mechanic - 6.5.10: Charles Bronson stars as a hitman who eventually takes a younger man under his wing; as the training continues, they eventually end up realizing they've been double-crossed by someone. This is kind of an interesting film that is pretty slow in parts, but in some ways those are the best parts. There is not a single word spoken for the first 15 minutes of the film while Bronsons does his first hit and that was awesome, plus a couple of other hit scenes are great, but there are definitely several parts that drag and I did not really like the younger protege. I enjoyed it overall, but the opening sequence and the end of the film are by far the best parts (the end is freaking awesome).

Ed Wood - 8/10
: Burton's sort of biopic about Edward D. Wood Jr., dubbed by many as the worst director of all time. For some reason I missed this when it first came out, but this was a pretty great movie. Some excellent acting from Depp as Wood and Martin Landau who was amazing as Bela Lugosi (no surprise he won an Oscar for this performance) and great style from Burton with the black & white filming and excellent set and costume design (no surprise for a Burton film, he always does great things there). It did seem some of Wood's personal difficulties were glossed over, but that was made up for with the time spent on Lugosi and focusing more on the professional difficulties which was probably the more interesting stuff anyway (how thee heck does this guy get all of these terrible films made!). Anyway, this review is terrible as I am kind of all over the place, but suffice to say I very much enjoyed the film.
