I saw this a couple years ago, I don't think I enjoyed it much either, but I really can't remember much except the one scene you mentioned.

I watched it because of some Sopranos clip where cast members were talking about their favorite mob/gangster movies, and I believe Michael Imperioli mentioned this one. nothing special

Glad I'm not alone. I have heard about this one for a long time, but yeah, very disappointing.

Hot Tub Time Machine - 8/10

Entertaining as hell. Definitely some extremely funny moments and good one liners.

Inception - 10/10

Saw this awhile go but never posted. I came in expecting something awesome and got it. Did not disappoint me one bit. Plot was not overly complex or too simple. I'm sure I missed alot of details though and definitely plan buying it on blu-ray.

Barry Lyndon 10/10 - I loved this movie. This movie reinforces my belief that Stanley Kubrick is the best movie director ever. Very realistic portrayal of a life in 18th century England. Beautiful scenery, locations, and overall atmosphere. The soundtrack completes this masterpiece (as usual with Kubrick films).

Che - 6/10 - Never would have thought that after watching a 4.5 hour movie about a man, I still would have no deeper understanding about him. This was more a guerrilla warfare howto movie than a biography, and really only focused on his efforts in Cuba & Bolivia. I thought Del Toro's performance was really good, just that the balance and direction of the movie was a little ???. Kinda boring at times, but also super long.

Food Inc. - 7/10

I like the presentation of the whole documentary. Divided up into sections so it didn't feel like it was dragging on. It doesn't really bash the food companies as hard as Michael Moore does his targets in his docus but does put them under a significant amount of scrutiny. A lot of the information is all well known so the shock value was at a minimum. I was surprised to see the box shaped beef after it had been through an ammonia bath to kill salmonella and other pathogens.

I've seen all other 1957+ Kubrick, never got around to seeing this one...
I guess I'll have to add it to my list now.

Casablanca - 8.5/10: So the big cinema near here that generally only shows the large blockbuster films has decided to do $5 classic screenings of some old films; last night was the first night and they screened Casablanca. I was pretty excited since I've never seen this front to back (I've seen parts of it at various times in my life) and getting to see it in the theatre, with a friend who had also never seen it all before, was particularly exciting. Anyway, I really liked it. I thought the acting performances were all pretty awesome, though admittedly I was not a huge fan of Ingrid Bergman (I also expected her to be much prettier, but had forgotten that I have never really found her all that attractive). Probably my favourite stuff was between Bogart and Claude Rains as Captain Renault, just perfect back and forth with great dialogue. It did lag for a small bit in the middle for me, but overall it was very enjoyable.

I have not seen it either. Paths of Glory is one of the few others I have not seen of his and I should probably check that one out too.

Do watch it. Very underrated in my opinion.
Ohh, I will... especially now that I have a decent setup for watching movies :)
Just curious, have you seen any of his works from the 50s? I've heard "The Killing" is supposed to be really good, but haven't seen it yet either....

I've never actually watched it beginning to end. I have seen chunks of it when I caught the end of it on AMC or TCM years ago, and I have seen the first half or so, but, never sat through the whole film. I would like to at some point, so it's somewheer in my netflix queue ... lol

I just reviewed The Killing a few posts up, it was awesome.

I've added Lyndon and Paths Of Glory to my queue, even though I'm not a huge war movie guy, since it's Kubrick I'll give Paths a shot.

Ahh thanks ...
I saw your post from Last Friday ....
I've never been to any sort of film festival.... They have a good number of them in the city of Chicago, but I don't wanna drive 1.5-2 hours for a fest ...
Ahh well ... The Killing does sound awesome. I think I'll be putting it on my list before Paths of Glory...

And about the War Movies, I'm a sucker for war movies usually. especially anything set during WW2, but.... I'll watch just about any war... But, Paths of Glory isn't your average war movie, at least from what I've seen of it.

I'll check out The Killing. Never seen it, or any other Kubrick film from the 50's.

This was just a mini-festival, but it was fun. VIFF is right around the corner, so I'm very excited about that. It's nice to see things in a theatre that you will probably never get to see otherwise.

I would expect nothing less from Kubrick which is why I did not hesitate to add it to my list. :D

The Godfather – 8.5/10: I’m a little late to the party on this one, I know. It’s funny, I’ve heard so much about this film over the years – the iconic scenes and lines – but honestly me knowing about certain parts didn’t detract from my enjoyment. Horse head scene was incredible. My main complaints are the speed at which this thing moves – very very slow – and the trouble I had with remembering multitudes of names of bosses and families. I’d like to see it again, probably the next time I’m bedridden. Three hours is a ton of time to invest in a movie that moves so slowly.

Food, Inc.– 8/10: Fascinating documentary about food, paying close attention to the historical evolution of it as an industry. The information presented was done so in such a way as to not be overly ham-handed like some of Michael Moore’s efforts. That’s not to say I don’t like Moore – I thought Sicko was awesome – it’s just a different style. It felt to me like the filmmaker here really wanted you to draw your own conclusions based on the facts presented.

Twilight – 3/10: I really wanted to not hate this movie. I wanted it to be good. But it wasn’t. In fact it was much worse than I anticipated. I got the feeling that if I’d read the books, I probably would’ve felt more attached to characters that I’m presumably supposed to care about. Kristen Stewart as Bella was a disaster. Could she be more wooden? Pattinson – old frying-pan-to-the-face himself – was actually the only reason this got 3 points from me at all. I actually thought he was quite good. He was believable. With a different female lead I think this could’ve been better, but still I’m not sure how much more you can do when it felt to me like a lot was probably lost moving this thing from the pages of a book to the screen.

After watching The Expendables I've decided to dedicate my Sunday nights to watching an action movie from the 80's and 90's starring the big action actors from that era. What are some of your recommendations?

Well which ones have you seen?

I mean there are so manyu:

Rambo (1&2)
Predator
Death Wish (Charles Bronson and this actually may be 70's, I can't recall)
Commando
Missing In Action (Chuck Norris!)
Running Man

That's all I can think of right now, but there are tonnes more. :hmm:

Just saw The Expendables myself - Awesome Craptastic 80's action movie ! If you expect anything more than that you will be dissapointed. I grew up on Sly, Arnold, Segal, and Van Dam so I loved this movie.

I would recommend Bloodsport, Kickboxer, and Lionheart for the Van Dam fan. Hard to Kill was classic Steven Segal, and hey who here remembers the American Ninja movies ?

Yeah I remember those. I watched tonnes of those ninja movies when I was kid. No matter how craptastic they were I always had fun with them. :D

Same here ! I miss those days. No need to worry about "good acting" or "plot", just mindless entertainment. Kind of like playing COD online, but better
