Rush - Beyond the Lighted Stage
http://www.amazon.com/Rush-Beyond-Li.../dp/B003J27WFW

9/10 - this is a must see for Rush fans. even if you aren't a rush fan i'm sure you would enjoy it. its the best rockumentary i have ever seen. Great insight to the band/ behind the scenes work. Covers the earliest days up through Snakes and Arrows. Geddy, Alex and Niel all are down to earth and honest in their interviews, very laid back.

The bonus disc is also great

The Expendables - 4/10

I have nothing positive to say about The Expendables. I was really hyped to see the movie, but it turned out to be utter trash, IMO. The pacing is terrible, and you don't get any real action until almost an hour in. There's some interspersed action before that, but it's nothing special.

Not only that, a good majority of the movie is dark and shot in the night. Ugh, I hate that. The story itself is marginally acceptable.

Overall, I expected much better for this much hyped action movie.

FWIW I think I actually like Episode 3 better than Return of the Jedi, which I found cloying and annoyingly cutesy even when I was 12 (I was that age when it came out, and yes I am old . . .).

Episode 3 better than Jedi??? Every single one of the new Episodes suck, including 3. Hayden Christensen is such a terrible actor, he kills both movies, not to mention everything else wrong with those movies.

I gotta go with Don Vito here. Revenge of the Sith was a much better story than the Ewok adventure time of Return of the Jedi. RotS finally got around to telling the story behind Anakin's transformation into Vader. I felt most of RotJ was superflous to the Star Wars saga, and could have been handled as an extra 1/2 hour or so to ESB. Granted, Ep. I-III could have been one movie, maybe two if you wanted a separate Clone Wars/Order 66 movie without all the excess crap of pod racing, Jar Jar, etc. I would say RotS was a good story with crap actors, and RotJ was a crap story with good actors. They're both not really that good.

Animal Kingdom - 9/10: Australian crime-drama about a young man that ends up with his bank-robbing family after his Mom dies. Great film that does an awesome job of showing the struggles of a family that is completely involved in the business as it all sort of goes down the tubes. This is not a fast-moving crime film, a la Guy Ritchie or whatever, this is a rough, down-to-earth drama that has scenes without a lot of dialogue.
Extremely well done and I recommend it to anyone that likes a slower, yet emotionally compelling crime film. **Side note: Been wanting to see this for a while after hearing about it since Sundance, but it just popped up this week at a local theatre. I expected it to just be the two of us, but the theatre had close to twenty people in it, which is great. So maybe the word is getting out a bit? :hmm:

The Good, The Bad, The Weird - 9/10 - Korean movie inspired by Sergio Leone's movies. Set in the Manchurian desert, its mostly similar to The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly but there are things taken from other Sergio Leone films as well. I was kind of leery when I put this in my Netflix queue but it is pretty damn awesome! Better than lots of Hollywood movies I've seen lately. lots of action and gunfights. It's kind of odd in that it's like Western, but they are using probably WWII era weapons and vehicles mixed with Old West style weapons and even standard martial arts weapons (swords, axes, spears, etc), so it;s hard to date the actual setting. At one time I saw a safe with a plaque that said 1925 but I'm pretty sure some things are from later years.

Yes! Super-stoked for this one! Glad it's finally out!

Public Enemies - Another glorified mob movie which evolves around the character study of John Dillinger played by Johnny depp.

The only character of interest was Johnny Depp. His wife was just along for the ride, and because of that she wasn't much of interest even though played a big role in the movie.

Maybe a movie based on a story too true to its roots and not worth retelling. 2/5.

I love Mad Men. I'd suggest starting from the beginning of the first season. If you watch, say, 5 episodes and it doesn't grab you, it may just not be your thing, but to me it's brilliant and consistently highly entertaining.

Yeah it's a great show.

I honestly have absolutely no common ground with the characters in the show, yet it's just so well done i am compelled to continue watching.

Journey from the Fall 8/10 - A moving portrait, in two acts, of a family torn apart by war. Journey from the Fall tells the story
of a family forced apart by the circumstances of the Vietnam War. The father a former south Vietnamese soldier refuses to leave with the rest of his family at the fall of Saigon. His wife, mother and son escape to America through a harrowing journey as one of the Vietnamese boat people and after some time set up a new life there. Meanwhile the father is captured by the North Vietnamese and placed into a forced labour "reeducation" camp.
In many ways there is little here that is really new, the suffering and inhuman treatment in the forced labour camps and the contrast to a new life in America has been told before in other films, though not necessarily about the same war or era, but Journey from the Fall manages to pull it off in a particularly poignant way. This is not an easy film to watch, you will likely find yourself genuinely moved to tears. It does however unfortunately overstep the bounds from moving drama into overt sentimentality a little too often. A few too many blurry childhood videos, coincidental meetings, and "sad music" all in the name of pathos. Thankfully the acting, directing and cinematography are all top notch so much of this, though not all, can be overlooked.

I mentioned that this is a story told in two acts and here is another place where Journey from the Fall falters a bit. Though interleaved somewhat we basically have act one telling the story of the father suffering in the camps back in Vietnam and act two telling the story of his family trying to make it in America. Though both stories are extremely effective we have a bit of an issue with the pacing of the two. Perhaps it would have been better if the two had been interleaved even more so that the two were told in parallel throughout from beginning to end. As it stands the first act is relatively fast paced and harrowing and stands in stark contrast to the second acts slow and steady pace. Both have their place and it works natively and emotionally, the wounds that are inflicted in the first act both figuratively and emotionally take their time to heal during the second act. However the contrast does make one feel like one is watching two separate films at times.

These issues aside this is still a very effective, moving, film and one well worth the watch if nothing else just to see the story of the war told from a different far too neglected point of view.

8: A Mormon Proposition

Wow. I don't care if you are anti/pro religion, anti/pro-gay marriage, anti-pro anything... this is messed up shit if stuff like this happen in the world today. What's more shocking to me is I have a ton of LDS friends and I play basketball at their church very often. I don't know how to feel about this now... I want to apporach them and ask them exactly what happened here, but I fear that I will hear things I really don't want to hear from them. Unbelievable how all this went down.

Great and saddening documentary, no matter your stance.

Solid 9/10

The Other Guys

I know how AT feels about Will Farrell. Love him or hate him (I love him to death), so I'd think that opinios vary greatly on this movie. I thought it was pretty good. Not Farrell's best for sure, but there are moments that are simply classic. I hate to admit it, but I didn't even understand the actual "plot" of the crime at hand. It really doesn't matter though, as that obviously isn't the center of this movie. Marky mark is awesome. Farrell is awesome. The Rock and Samuel L. are awesome.... and who was that Police chief? HOLY SHIT a Michael Keaton sighting? He was awesome too!

7/10 if you like Farrell
1/10 if you don't

REC(Spanish version) - 8/10

This is the original which the crappy American remake 'Quarantine' is based on. Never saw that one but I know it's going to be crappy. This one, however, is incredibly well made. It skillfully creates the illusion of a tv documentary feel at the start and the actors did a great job in behaving like real people you see when local news reporters interview people in the area. I also like the fact that they did a lot of character building before the situation gets totally out of hand. Definitely one of the better zombie flicks out there. The reporter girl is super cute also. Do want.

I actually liked Quarantine quite a bit (though I saw it before the awesome Spanish original). [REC] 2 is quite good too.

Everybody's Fine - 7.5/10 - DeNiro plays a recently widowed grandfather trying to reconnect with his family. Some interesting takes on parenting and parent-child relationships. Movie got progressively deeper as more and more is revealed to the protagonist and viewer alike (though often its not hard to guess - and the character isn't naive either). Liked it more than I thought I would, found myself more emotionally involved than I expected as well.

Black Dynamite - 7/10: Pretty darn fun blacksploitation spoof with Michael Jai White doing an awesome job as Black Dynamite, a blacktion hero who's brother is killed by The Man; Dynamite then goes on a rampage to avenge his death. A couple of spots lagged, but many of the jokes were pretty sharp and I definitely had fun with it.

Fantastic Four - 6/10: I expected to hate this, but I didn't. I sort of liked the goofiness of it and I have to admit, I also sort of like Chris Evans, he's pretty charismatic. Yeah, the rest of the acting was pretty weak and the whole setup/story is kind of dumb, but I was not bored and I only rolled my eyes three or four times.
