The Final Destination - 2/10

Awful, awful movie. Worst special effects I've seen including 'The Asylum' helmed films. Horrible overbaked refried regurgitated plot. Better acting found in Star Wars I - III. Only reason this gets 2 points is for Gabrielle Chapin's boobies.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine - 6/10
Pretty decent action flick. Unfortunately, this is a retcon origin of Wolverine, and not what most of us are used to.
Sabertooth and Wolverine are bros, he has bone claws since discovering his mutation, and takes an adamantium bullet to the brain pan that wipes his memory.
On its own it's an OK flick, but if you're a purist, you'll be nosebleeding in anger.

Extreme Movie - 1/10
This movie should be titled "Frankie Muniz is grasping at straws". Unfunny at all levels, except for a fart scene. Farts are funny to me, especially when it's from a hot chick.

Tooth Fairy - 6/10
Typical family fare. The Rock is a washed up but loving guy (dating Ashley Judd - lucky S.O.B.) that makes a bad choice and pays for it by becoming a tooth fairy for a week. A goofy fairy sidekick (beautifully played by Stephen Merchant) that wants to be a tooth fairy helps him through it. Queen Fairy (Julie Andrews) wants to save fairy land from unbelieving kids. Misunderstood teen boy needs courage boost to play guitar in the school talent show. And in the end
everybody gets what they want and grows as a person
- duh.

Nothing remarkable about the greatest coming-of-age character study on film to date? Come on now, I can see not appreciating the content but the acting and interaction was genuine.

The movie was ok, and the characters were well developed, but I didn't find anything to make it stand out against the countless similar movies out there.

Saw the unrated Hot Tub Time Machine. I went in not expecting much, and then it turned into a "Holy crap I'm going to throw up if I keep laughing" movie. The bald guy was a f**** riot. The "lost the bet BJ" scene, the "insemenation" scene, waiting for the guy to lose his arm....too much hilarity to list.

On top of this, EXTREMELY hawt awesome bouncing naked boobies were everywhere.

A Prophet - 8.5/10
This was an excellent foreign film. It was intersting to see an Arab portrayed as the protagonist. Some of the plot reminded me of other prison films I have seen, but overall it was really well done. Also, I didn't think the name of the film really tied in to what the movie was about. There is only one short scene where the guy is considered a prophet.

Shooter - 8/10
Fun film to just sit back and enjoy the ride. Lots of action and a prett decent plot.

Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog.

Joss Whedon, Neil Patrick Harris, and Nathan Fillion. No more needs to be said. :D

Valentine's Day - 6.5/10 - Not bad. Not my favorite genre but it was OK for what it was. Some sketchy performances, and some cringe-worthy awkwardly delivered lines, but overall not terrible.

The Joneses - 7/10
I liked that in the end they all realized that relationships and being who you want to be was more important than the image they were selling.

Bronson - 7.5/10: Wow, Tom Hardy's performance was not oversold at all. He is absolutely brilliant as Bronson, the psychotic British inmate with delusions of grandeur. The movie itself is not all that great, with some odd, disjointed sequences and pieces that try to hard to be artsy, however this is really just a one man show as Hardy is completely captivating; whether it's the ferocious fighting scenes, or the almost interrogation-like monolgues, you can't take your eyes off the guy. Definitely one of the best performances I have seen in years.

Whiteout - 2/10: Ugh, what a piece of crap. The whole premise for this film is stupid and the execution is even worse. I mean the door opens to the outside, a cup of water crashes on the floor and instantly freezes, yet people are walking out into the snow with their faces and hands uncovered with almost no consequences; planes fly wherever they want without issue of icing or anything else. The plot twists were predictable and the flasbacks were so completely stupid. Bah, waste of time; if I want yummy Kate Beckinsale I will just watch Underworld, at least those films are watchable.

 Glad you finally got to this one. Hardy was definitely great.

Orphan - 8/10

Really enjoyed this movie. An American couple, after losing a child to stillbirth, adopts a charming Russian girl, Esther. The family warms up to her and all seems perfect. Then things start breaking down. I loved the angle that Esther was
really a psychotic 34 y/o suffering from dwarfism posing as a child to be loved by father-type men
. Esther's escapades grow more and more desperate & depraved as things start unraveling.
I thought this was a great suspense movie. Not really a horror flick as they made it out to be in trailers. The actors did a great job in their roles, especially Aryana Engineer who played Max (and is deaf IRL) and Vera Farmiga who is the mother
fighting to protect her family and figure out Esther's true history
. This was more of a 'how are they going to figure it out' instead of a 'who's really behind it' film. I think the scariest part of this movie was that shortly after this was released on DVD, we had a real life Russian adopted child that had severe issues be sent back by his adoptive parents LINK.

^^ yeah, I enjoyed that movie more than I thought I would. Pretty well done.

So they are doing a film noir festival at the local boutique theatre and last night they showed:

Double Indemnity - 9.5/10: Such a freaking awesome movie. Billy Wilder's 1944 story about an insurance salesman that falls for a married woman, who seems to be unhappy with her current situation. The dialogue in this film is so fantastic, extremely quick-witted and sharp, with tonnes of awesome back and forth; Fred Macmurray and Edward G. Robinson were both amazing, really, really amazing; I could have watch those two on screen togetehr for hours! The story is well written (screenplay at least partially done my Raymond Chandler, who is a writer I love) and there are some fantastic shots from Wilder. Realyl hard to find any faults with this one, I absolutely loved it. The print could have been a bit better, but hey, what can you do. **side note: I took a friend of mine to the film and she generally hates old, black and white movies, but as we walked out of the theatre she was saying how awesome the movie was and how enjoyable the experience was. So just FYI for those scared of older films.

The Cutting Edge: The Magic of Editing - 8.5/10: Fascinating for anyone that has interest in how films are actually made. This documentary interviews a good chunk of the greatest American directors around (Scorcese, Tarantino, Cameron, etc.) and their editors as they discuss the process of pulling a film together through editing and actually shows a chunks of very famous films coming together after everything has been shot. It also goes into the history of editing and how things started and evolved throughout the years. Probably sounds boring to some, but it was absolutely fascinating for me and one I will watch again.

Sherlock Holmes - 7.2/10 - At first I didn't really like where they were taking the story, and didn't enjoy the first part of the movie that much. But things really picked up and tied together nicely. Set up the sequel a little too much IMO, but oh well. Couldn't shake how much Holmes reminded me of House, which is fine bc I enjoy that show too.

71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance - 6/10: An earlier Michael Haneke film that shows snippets of various people's lives, interspersed with television new footage in an attempt to show society's dissociation with the world and people around them. There were some interesting parts, that built to a pretty satisfying climax, but there were definitely parts where I was bored. I liked what Haneke was trying to do here, but it was just not as compelling as it should have been.

Harsh Times - 7/10: Sort of the opposite of how I fell about 71 Fragments; I really, really enjoyed the build-up in this movie, the various intereactions and sequences with Bale and Rodriguez as they catch up and ride around town ripping shit up. The interaction between the two fo them, along with all of the interesting things they get up to (including Bale's job interview process) are all fantastic, with appearances by some great character actors; just great stuff overall. For me, the film falls apart in the final act when things inevitably comes to a head; I did care about the characters, so I should have been more invested in the final sequences, but I found it a bit much and a little too forced to be convincing. Decent film overall though.

Pandorum - I saw a preview for it about a year ago in the movies and was like yeah, I gotta see this one. Then it came out in the movies and for whatever reason, it lasted like 4/5 weeks it seemed and it was gone. Well, if you loved Event Horizon, you'll love this one. Man, completely forgot about it. What a treat! Probably give it an 8 of 10. Can anyone recommend similar movies to this that are not as mainstream? This kind of reminded me of like a sleeper/cult classic like Serenity.

Shutter Island 9/10- I'm late to the party on this one, so I'll keep it brief. This movie looks AMAZING. The cinematography and varied color palette make the scenes ooze with atmosphere.

Kick-Ass - 7.5/10

I was worried (judging by the trailer) that this was just going to be a "Hey, lets put a little cute kid in violent and vulgar situations and laugh as what happens" type of film, which is why I waited until now to watch it - and while there is some of that here, the movie itself was pretty damn good. A fun watch.

From Paris With Love - 8/10 - awesome action movie. Kind of starts out slow then gets intense. Ending was kind of a letdown though.

In the Loop - 1/10 - ugh, so boring. Saw a preview of this and it sounded hilarious. It's not.

The Kids Are All Right - 7/10 - Good performances in this one, but I felt like it started to drag by the end. I always enjoy watching Mark Ruffalo, even if he suffers from a Clooneyesque tendency to play the same guy in every film. Likewise, I always hate Annette Bening and this movie is no exception, although her character here was supposed to be a bit hateable.

Scott Pilgrim vs the World: I thought this was a very interesting movie. I t was very quirky and had some (what I thought) were amazing visuals and extremely unique. I wouldn't mind seeing it again. ^_^ Not to mention it was geeked out as could be!!

Well, that's really just the character from the comics... I really don't think it's meant to be a shock factor, although it does work well in creating a lot of "what the hell did she just say!?" moments. I lent the DVD to my officemate and he actually commented on how he was surprised when she said something like, "Alright you cunts!"

I think I need to see this movie again... mostly because a midnight showing after only 5-6 hours of sleep does not do me well :p. The humor wasn't too bad. I finished reading volume 1 of the comic and it's pretty close. The only difference I could find is...
in the comic, Scott uses his entire group of friends to defeat Patel (Ex #1) where in the movie he throws a cymbal to disrupt him.
. There were slight differences in scenes, but nothing big. Although, one thing I saw that makes me believe there will be a difference later on...
there was no ninja video game, which set up the whole Nega Scott thing later on... so I'm assuming that will not be in the comics, but I believe the (later) comics weren't done when the script was written.
