500 days of summer - 7.5/10

I enjoyed it (chick flick aside). Thought the editing was interesting/crafty, pretty good acting IMHO, funny for the most part.

Raising Arizona - 9/10

Funniest movie ever. I wish Leonard Smalls(Baby Tracker) had a bigger role IMHO.

Ip Man - 9/10 (maybe even higher, need to watch the blu on the big screen)

This is a great martial arts film. The storyline is good and the fight scenes are done extremely well. I ordered the blu-ray box set of Ip Man 1 and 2 (rented what I watched today through iTunes.)

If you are a fan of martial arts films, this is well worth watching, even buying.

Invention of Lying - 6/10
Just couldn't get into it. It wasn't too bad, but as a comedy it didn't make me laugh like I thought it would. Based on the idea that no one in the world lies until 1 man learns to, and since no one lies everyone takes what he says to be the truth.

Mr. Nobody - 9.5/10: Wow, this was pretty damn amazing. Jared Leto stars as Nemo Nobody, the last mortal man, about to die at 118 years old, in a future of semi-immortals. However the story is about choice and the paths that come about as the result of choosing, or of not choosing. It jumps around a lot and I imagine you have to be careful to pay close attention so you do not get lost, though I did not really have many issues there because I was quite riveted by it all. I'm very happy I saw this in the theatre as it is beautifully cinematic, with some great sequences. Hopefully I will have time to see it again before it leaves theatres.

The Girl Who Played With Fire - 6.5/10: The sequel to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and this centres more around Lisbeth's story. Unfortunately this is nowhere near as good as the first one and I think a lot of that may have to do with the fact Lisbeth and Blomkqvist are almost never together on screen; their relationship in the first film was one of the things I loved. I enjoy Lisbeth as a character, she's pretty awesome, but I just could not get into this one as much as the first. I'm still looking forward to the final film to see what happens with to the characters, particularly since this one ended on more of a cliffhanger than the first movie.

The Man From Earth - 7.5/10: A very simple (it all takes place in pretty much in one room), low-budget film, about a guy who claims to be around 14,000 years old. He confesses this to his friends, a group of professors, at his home and the story revolves around them trying to deal with this and his explanation of everything. The acting is pretty dodgy and terrible in some parts, but the premise and the way they handle it is interesting enough to make up for that. The 90 minutes flew by and it brings up some interesting ideas; pretty darn enjoyable. Easily one of the ugliest Blu-rays I have ever seen though, there is really no point in seeing it on Blu-ray.

Adaptation - 8/10: No idea why it took me so long to see this. Anyway, I really liked it and in a way this kind of felt like Kauffman's 8 1/2. I really enjoyed Cage, as Kauffman, dealing with his personal demons and insecurities as he tries to adapt The Orchid Thief into a movie. I was a kind of turned off by the ending at first, but the more I thought about it afterward I decided maybe it was a play on something that was said a little earlier in the film (probably pretty obvious, but I did not catch it at first). This is a perfect Nic Cage type of role too; good stuff.

THX1138 - 6.5/10: I was actually kind of bored, but I did like some of the things being done (I particularly enjoyed the end). The plodding beginning of the film did very little to engage me, so when things start happening I was not all that captivated, but I was quite impressed by how decent the effects still looked, unless Lucas did something with the director's cut to bump up the effects later. Anyway, I may have been hindered a bit because I watched this right after seeing Mr. Nobody which totally blew me away, so I may need to re-visit this again.

Paris, Je T'Aime - 6/10: One of those compilation type films where a whole bunch of directors do vignettes based around a particular subject, in this case the city of Paris. I have a tough time with these films sometimes and this one was no different. I enjoyed some of the shorts, but some of them were not good and were almost sort of pointless. I think with these kind of things, since the segments are so short, it is better (for me anyway) to do something a little more odd and off-key (for example the story about the Mime, or the Coen Brothers' short with Steve Buscemi). Trying to do something emotionally engaging just does not work since you have no time to get to know anybody or care about anything. Anyway, really hit and miss, but worth watching for some of the bits.

Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia - 5.5/10: A 70's film centered around a $1.0 million bounty on the head of a guy that knocked up a powerful man's daughter. It actually focuses on one guy as he searches for Alfredo Garcia, which to me detracts from the film. I was almost hoping for something similar to It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, with all kinds of people running around trying to collect this bounty, but it turns into more of a personal story about the one guy. It had some good moments, but I was bored in parts. The final climaxes are pretty great, but good chunks of the middle was where it fell flat to me.

Law Abiding Citizen - 8/10. A well done suspense movie. Nothing bad about it at all. Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx both play their roles very well. It's got Chief O'Brien from Star Trek in it so how can you possibly complain?

The Edge - 6/10: 1997 film following Anthony Hopkins as a billionaire know-it-all and Alec Baldwin as the photographer for Hopkins' super model wife as they get trapped out in the wilderness. It's pretty dumb, but there were some great scenery shots, plus a bit of decent action, plus one of the unintenionally funniest scenes I had watched in a while
when Michael from Lost gets attacked by the bear. He is getting thrown around like a ragdoll by the giant Kodiak and I was laughing my ass off.
Hilarious. It's new to Blu-ray and it looks pretty damn nice, so worth a watch if you feel like killing a couple of hours and are not too worried about the silliness and plot holes.

Repo Man 8/10--Enjoyed it a lot, but me and the 2 friends I watched it with were like, "Oh no!" at the end. It was a big surprise and certainly not what we really wanted, but good nevertheless.

Kick-Ass 7/10. The main character was a little annoying. Nick Cage was good. The little girl was awesome. I recommend this. It's a little graphic though.

Layer Cake 7/10. This might be rated even higher but I was multitabling in poker on my 2nd display so I probably missed some shit. The girl in the movie is damn good looking. Sienna Miller? At one point Daniel Craig is holding up a pistol and it's like Oh damn, that's why they chose him for Bond. The movie felt like a Snatch/Lock, Stock & Barrel which also kicked ass. I recommend this.

On the last 30 minutes of A Clockwork Orange...

Okay, what the hell is this movie about? I mean I get the whole treatment thing and all..but what is the point? Why should I like it? I'm not going to say it is bad, but...and how can people not "get through it"? Surely not because it was "graphic".

It was graphic for the time it was released. Just like 2001: A Space Odyssey had special effects never seen before until that movie.

I watched about 5 or 10 minutes of valkyrie last night on TV, it was already about 15 minutes into the movie. I watched up until tom cruise has his quick meeting with hitler.

idk what I was missing, but the accents, and lack of accents really threw me off. Though I didn't see the beginning, the plot seemed basic enough, and it seemed like a pretty shitty movie

theres a good rottentomato blurb from some dude

Lack of proper accents have never bugged me in a movie. I enjoyed The Hunt for Red October and Enemy at the Gates which are English and Scottish people playing Russians with English accents. It's just that the acting sucks in Valkyrie by most people in it which is why it wasn't that good. I enjoy Cruise's other movies but that role isn't one that he was made for.

3-Iron (Binjip, "Empty House") - 7/10
Ok when this movie first started off, I thought this movie made absolutely no sense. The main characters in this movie do not act normal at all whatsoever. I was ready to give this movie a bad rating for trying too hard to be artsy. But then the movie did not let up on the strange behavior and kept getting even more bizarre. By the end of the movie the characters eventually did grow on me and I finally understood what this movie was aiming for,... sorta. In any case, it's definitely worth a rewatch. I'll definitely check out more from Kim Ki-Duk as I here he's well known for these obscure films.

Trick 'r Treat - 7/10: A selection of horror vignettes based around Halloween, which kind of gave me a Creepshow feel, which is cool. A couple of the stories were pretty fun and was pretty stylishly put together. I also liked how they tied everything together, with showing parts from different perspectives. Fun little Halloween flick, though not really scary at all.

Tyson - 8/10: As a boxing fan, I have been wanting to see this for a long time. It's not quite as heavy on the boxing stuff as I would have liked, but it was definitely a fascinating character study of the man. It sure makes you think how Tyson's life would have been so different if Cus D'Amato had not died when he did; after Cus died, everything seemed to spin out of control for Tyson, but watching that earlier footage of Tyson, wow, he was an absolutely amazing, dominant force. So much speed and power. Not the greatest technical documentary, but if you like boxing or have any interest in the man, then this is definitely worth a watch.

The Other Guys - 6.5/10: I liked this. It was not great, but I had fun with it. I really enjoyed Mark Wahlberg as the straight guy and there were some pretty damn funny scenes. I have to think seeing an unrated director's cut would improve things quite a bit as it almost feels like a bunch of the absurd stuff I enjoy in a Ferrell/McKay project was missing. Not much else to say; I liked some of the site gags, but there could have been more of those weird little things for me.

Party Down - 9/10: Watched the entire first season of this comedy and it's awesome. Follows a catering company in LA, the kooky employees, and the weird parties they get to work. The cast is awesome (Adam Scott, Jane Lynch, Lizzy Caplan, Martin Starr) and they have some appearance by a lot of great other character actors/comedians. Unfortunately they only made 2 seasons of this show (it was recently cancelled) but the first seasons was awesome and I am really looking forward to digging into season 2 soon. Great stuff.
