The General - 1926 9/10

I'd heard that this was one of the best movies to come out around the end of the silent film era. So, I had to watch. The story was amusing, a bit simple, but quite creative. The acting and stunts were magnificent. Keaton took risks back then like Chan used to in the 80s/90s. If he would have slipped or lost his balance I'm sure there were many cases where he would have perished. But, he pulled it off, and survived to make this great fun movie.

Now I feel like I need to check out some of his films :)

Yes, I want to see this. I've heard good things (honestly, I've seen only one, maybe two Keaton films) and keep meaning to get around to seeing it. I'm so freaking backlogged. :(

I'm sure the documentary was a bit biased, but still, how can you say there was no reasonable doubt anywhere? Dissapointing. But it is one hell of a watch, very amazing stuff. Full of great characters...I rewatched it recently with my gf, and watched the film makers bonus interview. That was some really good stuff too, if you haven't seen it.
I skipped the commentary. Wife was pretty pissed at the end with the evidence that was left out and couldnt handle any more. We were talking about the case AGAIN today, and she told me that
it was quite cold out that night, and Peterson claimed he was outside for multiple hours without a jacket. They had meteorologists called to the stand and everything.
. I dont think it was intentionally biased, dont think the filmmakers had an agenda. I hope it was just a side effect of essentially ONLY being able to see the defense side of things.

Repo Men 3/10 WTFBBQ. How many different movies did they steal from?

I really didn't think it was that bad of a movie... I'd probably give it somewhere between a 6 and a 7. I thought the end was rather interesting.

well check out the commentary if you can. first, it mentioned that at a certain point, harden and the prosecution started to make it hard for the filmmakers to have access. second, it seemed like the filmmakers got very close with the whole peterson family, and a bit of how they reacted to the verdict and their opinion on it.

and a cold night? whats the theory, that he had a jacket on, which kept the rest of his clothes clean while he beat her? ehh, seems a bit weak.

there were 2 major points I had a problem with. that historical data about no other assaults where there were those kinds of lacerations but no skull fractures etc, and henry lee shitting on the prosecution's blood guy.

There wasn't much evidence directly linking michael peterson to the crime. If you wanted to believe there were things that pointed to him being the guy who did it, ok. but to be completely sure without any reasonable doubts? I'd be terrified if I ever had to face a jury as an innocent man

Two words: blow poke. :D

The commentary is definitely worthwhile. I'll have to give this another watch again one of these days.

I would be hard pressed to choose between watching Repo Men again and getting tested for STDs. That movie was garbage.

Darby O'Gill and the Little People - 5/10 : This was not nearly as much fun as I remember it. And it looks like Disney assed it up. They must have not liked the original voice track or been able to properly restore it. Sounds to me like they dubbed the whole movie over. The new voice actors they hired were weak and unmotivated. They had no soul and were much less interesting to listen to than the original voices. Also they seem to have replaced a lot of the original English with Gaelic, which may have been their intention when originally making the movie and they changed their minds at the last minute. In fact I think during Sean Connery's song they may have even dubbed that. But it was still a fun movie and shows story & execution are more important than anything else.

most of the movie is built on a ripoff of Terry Gilliam's Brazil.

Grave of the Fireflies - 5/10
Far from a bad movie, and I can see why its well liked, but it really didn't do anything for me, it just wasn't that compelling.

Murder By Death - 7.5/10
Funny movie.

Basketball Diaries - 6/10
Pretty well done, but felt cliched.

Phantasm III - 7.5/10
Like the first Phantasm (haven't seen the second one), its solid horror, pretty campy, but has some character that makes it enjoyable. Not as good as the first, which was better all around, but still decent.

Ghost In The Shell - 7.5/10
I really liked certain parts, but it just didn't feel like a full movie, and overall didn't make a lot of sense, partly because it sorta delves into some deep topics but never really goes anywhere with it, and then before you know it the movie is over. I also watched the updated one (I think its called 2.0), and while the picture quality was quite a bit nicer, I didn't really like the CGI stuff (which obviously isn't very impressive by today's standards).

Doomsday - 6/10: I liked this more than I expected and it was pretty fun. Felt a lot like Escape From New York, with Rhona Mitra as Snake Plissken, in a post-viral Scotland. Yeah, the film is pretty ridiculous, but it's a genre film that I think is pretty fun in its absurdity. The characters were over the top, but the action was fun, with a tonne of blood and guts, along with some genuinely funny parts. The editing was kind of annoying in parts, in that new, quick cutting kind of way, but aside from that this really felt like an homage to John Carpenter, which is a-ok in my books.

Was this the movie where there was some sort of epidemic and instead of spawning zombies, it spawned countless mohawks and biker chicks?

Well, yeah, sort of. Kind of felt like a slightly better Ghosts of Mars. :awe:

Trust me, I know it's bad, but I think it's supposed to be. I mean it's a genre flick, nothing more, and keeping that in mind, well I kind of had fun with it, plus I like hot chicks kicking ass (see: Evil, Resident)

Humm, iet's do a little psycho-babble analysis

likes chicks that kick ass
does not like anime

where do you find most chicks that kick ass?

Japanese Anime! Hell, Resident Evil is based on Biohazard, a Japanese game/manga franchise!

Animated chicks have overexaggerated features. Like women in the real world with implants and botox.

So lemme ask you, do you like this type of "real" woman, or Ugly Betty?

If you look at the two kick-ass females I listed (Rhona Mitra and Milla Jovavich) they do not have over-exaggerated features, nor would I call either of them "ugly Betty". I like real women, not plastic "real" women and certainly not animated ones.

You are forever doomed to live action version of anime movies then.

Fine examples like Streetfighter, DoA and Dragon Balls.

I can live with that, though those were all pretty terrrible. I liked SF a bit, but that was more for nostalgia than for anything else.

Despereux – 6/10. Story line was pretty whatever, but it was enjoyable enough.
Marley & Me – 7/10. 6/10 overall, but I’m a dog person so automatic +1

no one has seen a movie in 2 days?

Heh, my TV crapped out and I was shopping and waiting for my warranty replacement; finally got the new set today and have just been fiddling around with the video settings and setting up the new speakers. I plan on watching a bunch this weekend. :awe:
