I kinda went on a Chevy Chase bender this weekend. That being said:

Cops & Robersons - 8/10
I liked this movie when it first came out and still enjoyed it. Chevy Chase fancies himself a detective, based on his extensive knowledge of cop shows (Barbarella, Rockford Files, etc.). Jack Palance needs to take down a criminal living next door to the Robersons and sets up a surveillance stakeout in the house, filling Chase's dream. Chase bumbles his way through and (big surprise)
they capture the two criminals next door
. Lots of funny moments throughout this movie, especially Palance's phone call to Richard Davi regarding a Maui trip.

Fletch (Jane Doe Edition) & Fletch Lives - 9/10 each
These continue to be some of my favorite movies. Chevy Chase is the titular character, an investigating reporter who gets involved in various plots & schemes to get to the bottom of the story. So many quotables from these movies, so many crazy disguises, so much fun.

Vacation Quadrology(?) - 9/10 all around
Again, more of my favorite movies. Crazy family antics with the Griswold clan en route to Wally World, Europe, Christmas, and Las Vegas. We all have had family catastrophes (though hopefully not as extreme) like these, and all have our own 'Cousin Eddie' to contend with. Great times all through.

Three Amigos - 9/10
One of the first movies I remember seeing with just my Dad, I think I was 10 at the time. Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, and Martin Short are 3 out-of-work actors that normally star in Tex-Mex westerns. They get what they think is an acting gig in a Mexican village. However, El Guapo and Jeffe are the real deal, and the Three Amigos need to find a way to rescue the villagers. The bar scene in this movie is one of my favorite scenes of all time.

Good to know you guys thought the same thing I did. I also made it to about 40 minutes before I realized I should stop wasting my time waiting for it to stop being terrible. Somehow it has a 3.4 average out of 150k ratings on Netflix.

INK - wow, 3 people think it sucked so far. We are not alone! Off to Netflix to rate it a 0. Ahhh, I see that one person liked it but was high at the time.

Just got done watching the director's cut of Amadeus on Netflix. Wikipedia describes it as a "black comedy" which I don't agree with at all.

Anyway, I've been meaning to buy it for a while, so I should pick it up.

Lol, black comedy? Not sure about that. Love that movie, I've owned in 3 formats so far and have 3 different versions of the soundtrack. Yeah, I'm a huge fan of that film.

I didn't care for it much either. Unfortunately I own it. :D

Funny People - 5/10

It has some funny parts but in the end I suppose it is meant to be more of a drama. The drama just doesn't work and the comedy doesn't do enough to save the film.

(On a 10 point scale, 5 equals average with no expectation of ever watching the film again.)

Fail for having good taste in movies apparently. Because none of you can tell me anything good about it. It's shitty.

If nothing else, I do not understand how you cannot appreciate De Niro's performance. He was absolutely phenomenal in this, it's an iconic performance. I can see finding the movie a bit too dark, but not finding anything redeeming kind of boggles my mind. :hmm:

I liked it but only because I was high at the time :)

I liked it and wasn't high. Although I appreciated it more the 2nd time around because things that don't quite make sense in the beginning are revealed near the end of the movie. Once you understand that, the 2nd watch through was more interesting or you're like "so that's what was going on!".

The City of Lost Children - 7/10 - Wow, this movie is weird and I really have no idea wtf it's about, but it's pretty interesting.

Avatar 8/10 Very good movie. I have to chuckle at all the Political angst some had about this movie. The Graphics were simply awesome, even though I just watched it on BluRay without 3D. Story is Above Average.

How the hell is Taxi Driver a good movie? It sucked.

I would say its fairly overrated although I wouldn't say it sucked. Watching it today, De Niro's character loses a lot of the shock (for lack of a better word) value I think. I actually feel about Rocky the way you feel about Taxi Driver though. There's just something off about movies from right around there in my opinion (although there's some I like a lot, like Network, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, etc).

Mary and Max - 9/10
Weird animated (clay stop motion) movie that just has this unrelenting charm to it. Its really light on action (just read the synopsis and you'll wonder how they even made that into a movie) and the characters don't even seem that interesting, but somehow its still enthralling.

Fierce Creatures 7/10
I spent probably the first 1/3 of the movie trying to figure out WTF was going on as I thought this was a direct sequel to A Fish Called Wanda. Pretty good.

Where The Wild Things Are 6/10
I really liked certain things, but overall did not like the film. Really did not like the kid, although I think that was somewhat intended.

Flakes 2/10
I'll admit I watched it because of Zooey, but I just gave up about halfway in.

Cosmos - ?/10
I dig Carl Sagan, but I think hour long episodes are bit much, he would've been better in shorter doses. He kinda puts me to sleep. Of the episodes I've watched so far, I think they definitely could have broken them up into shorter segments. I'm also baffled at some of the sets and how they go so in depth (full time correct sets/costumes) to tell little bits of things. I think this would be a great show if they made a modern version, but sadly we wouldn't get Sagan's unique charm.

Since I had commented on the Coen brothers somewhat recently in my ratings here's a couple more:
Barton Fink 6.5/10
Odd, mostly likable, but not stellar.
Miller's Crossing 8/10
Loved the feel, very well done although the story was a bit of a letdown at the end.

I really love certain things about their movies, but often it feels like they neglect other parts (where much of the movie seems "normal" and then some parts are really quirky) or the characters and/or story just isn't strong enough to carry it.

Great film! I rented it once on a whim based on the cover art alone.

I also really enjoyed Delicatessen 7/10 from the same people that did City of Lost Children.

Winter's Bone - 9/10 - So far, my favorite film of the year. Jennifer Lawrence is going to be a big deal, and her performance in this is career-making. She plays a 17-year-old named Ree Dolly living in a poor community in the Ozarks, where she takes care of her young siblings and catatonic mother. A bail bondsman shows up and informs her that her father is due in court on a meth charge and appears to have skipped bail, after having put up the family home for bond. The rest of the film is devoted to her search for her dad, and the dangers she faces in the paranoid backwoods community of criminals in which he traveled. The whole film is bleak and troubling, but Ree lifts it out of the muck as a strong, focused lead.

Awesome. I was wanting to see this on the weekend, but was too busy. Hoping to get to it this week before it leaves.

Whip It - 6.0/10 - Pretty formulaic, had higher hopes. Having lived in Austin TX, was cool to see familiar sights. I never felt like any conflict really developed, comedy was lacking too. One small thing that bothered me, what ever happened to
the problem they had with the fire department
. Wish they had addressed that, could have taken 5 seconds.

IMHO: Avatar was OK. But it is not an original story at all and it will be forgotten in 5 years time. The 3D hype sucks. I specifically do not see 3D movies anymore. All they do is bother me and cost me money. Avatar 6/10.

Original enough. I keep hearing people harp on this, just makes me wonder what an Original Story is? Every basic Plot has been told before, what's different from Story to Story is Setting mostly.

I had a chance to see the Spanish film "Cell 211" the other day. Excellent, tense film that has some very good acting, especially from the two leads. It is almost like a better, Spanish version of Un Prophete, if you are looking for a comparison (which itself is a very good movie).

Highly recommended

Kagemusha - 6.5/10: Kurosawa's film from 1980 about a warlord that dies and is replaced by his double. Epic in scope (and in length), with some breathtaking war scenes, I found some of the more emotional, dialoge-filled moments to be a bit lacking. I did get sucked back in with the war scenes, but I was mored at times in the other parts. Overall I liked the film, but I seem to enjoy Kurosawa's black and white films far more than his colour films, but I'm not sure whether it is purely psychological, or if it is the actual material. The Blu-ray was pretty nice, with decent grain.

Three Monkeys (Üç maymun) - 8/10: A Turkish film about a family dealing with some strife, when the Father goes to prison for 9 months on behalf of his boss, with the promise of a cash payment once he gets out. This is a pretty slow film, with a lot of scenes where not much is happening, but I loved the struggle it showed as the family deals with all of this and some of the scenes in this were awesome, even though not much was going on. The directing here was great and I just enjoyed how things were framed and how the characters interacted with each other. Again, a slow film, but a fascinating watch.

Despicable Me 5/10

Ugg I was extremely disappointed with this movie. It started out different and fun but just got so repetitive and the storyline was one of those that's been done tons of time and didn't even try to add anything new. Also those stupid little yellow guys you see in the previews quickly become annoying as they're in the movie too much. The entire second half of the movie was boring.

Avatar - 5/10

For special effects alone. I didn't watch it in 3d and didn't get the hype around it. Bascially a Cowboys and Indians movie.

Boyz in the Hood - 6.5/10

So many little stories. A late 80's/early 90's time capsule - at least for me.

Go! - 7/10

Hadn't seen it in a while. Still made me laugh. Decent effort and Katie Holmes was watchable.
