Only Book1 is short enough to fit into a movie (much less be faithful). Each successive movie leaves more and more out, so by the time you get the PoA, huge chunks are being left out. It was downright laughable how much was left out of GoF and OoP.
Angel-A 2005 6.5 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0473753/
Hadn't read any reviews before I watched this one, recorded off of IFC or Sundance. I generally like Luc Besson's work, and this isn't an exception. The story is far fetched, but it still made for an enjoyable film. Probably better as a date movie, especially if your woman is taller than you.
Touching the Void 2003 7.5 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379557/
I thought this was well put together and well acted. The cinematography and camerawork were great, but, I'm not the biggest fan of mountain climbing documentaries.
Predators - 7/10: Not bad, not bad all. I'm kind of an Adrien Brody fan and I think he does well here; pretty damn ripped too, though of course he's no Arnold. I'm so very, very glad they did this as a sequel and not as a reboot, so you got a few callbacks to the original films, plus some new developments. The action was good, the setting was perfect (felt quite similar to the first one) and the cast was decent for the most part; the girl was a little dodgy and I had no idea former UFC figher Oleg Taktarov was an actor, that made me chuckle out loud, but he was fine. Oh yeah, also good to see the guy from Justified, he's awesome. Sure, there are a bunch of silly parts, a bit of dumb dialogue, and a few things that did not make sense to me, but I enjoyed it overall. If you liked the first film, then I find it hard to imagine you will not like this one.
Predators - 6/10 - I thought it was OK but it was not that great. It started with very slow and boring character introductions. I hate when movies do not do a good job of blending the character introductions into the movie. It was really an "I am Bob, I am Merc" type BS. After the character introductions, the movie did carry a good pace though. Overall, the acting was fine. The suspense was missing and
the "predator dogs" were pointless
. There was nothing scary about the movie. It was just a mindless action movie. In the end, it's worth a DVD rental. Not worth the $10 admission though. I do want to watch P1 and P2 again though. Go figure P1 was a much much better movie. Do yourself a favor, watch P1 now and wait for P3 to hit the rentals.
Most disturbing though was the dad who brought what must have been his 8 year old son to the movie. Seriosuly, where is DCF when they are needed.
INK - 2/10 - An artsy movie that has poor plot development. I was basically looking for a movie and people that have seen this have liked it it seems. I will give it a 10/10 in terms of cinemotography and artsiness. However, it gets a 0/10 for script and plot/plot development. So a 2/10. I only watched about 20 minutes as I could not deal with the lack of an understandable story. I recomend that no one see it unless you are a film student.

I didn't feel that the first three movies left too much out (and matched the tone of the books), but with the fourth they both left quite a bit out and also changed things that made no sense to change. I felt the movies peaked at the third one (faithful to the books, good mix of action/suspense and character development), while I felt the books peaked with the fourth one (with the third being a close second).
I actually think not having read the books might be beneficial in that you're not paying attention to what's missing/different from the books.

I was worried for a moment it was going to start with some flashbacks, which it thankfully did not do. I liked that it remained on the planet the entire time and did not spend too much time going into the backgrounds of the characters.
I think the dogs had a point.
It was a mechanism for the characters do discover the gravity of their predicament, that they were essentially being hunted for sport. Without that, I'm not sure how else they would have fuond that out, which would have changed their tactics in dealing with the situation (not sure whether that is good or bad, but I think it's true).
Again, a flawed movie, but as a fan of the first, I quite enjoyed this one.

true, the dogs did have that point. But they were introduced and never used again. I also thought that the scene dragged out a bit. It also seemed like some dogs were being hit multiple times with the mini gun and they would keep coming and then a single shot from a rifle killed them. I was like, WTF. Might just have been me ... but with that much lead being thrown at the dogs and none seeming to fall, that was the impression that I got.
Good to know you guys thought the same thing I did. I also made it to about 40 minutes before I realized I should stop wasting my time waiting for it to stop being terrible. Somehow it has a 3.4 average out of 150k ratings on Netflix.

Hah I'm hoping on that actually - I mean, I read Book6/7 so many years ago now that I'm almost coming with a blank slate when I see the movies in the theater. Also agree that PoA still remains the pinnacle.
As for movies I saw recently - Predators...um, 6.5/10. Coulda have been ALOT better. Both Topher and Fishburne distracted with their screen time. With Topher I have no expectations...but Fishburne really disappointed.
