Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings 5/10

Overall, a big "meh".

Too much choreographed dance fighting. Good special effects, and a couple of laughs from a few characters.

However, I didn't realize Awkwafina was in the movie, so that really killed a lot of enjoyment for me as I find her very whiny and annoying (and not funny at all).

If you've seen her in anything, she always plays the same character. Basically the younger generation's version of Tom Green.

Knives out. I agree with IDDB 8/10. Loved it! Daniel Craig with a Southern drawl - lol! Top notch cast; interesting twists and funny!
still cant believe netflix paid $200m for the rights to 2 sequels and paying Craig $50M for each.
so $150M spent already per movie.
and they haven even shot a second of film plus the salaries of other actors.

How the hell do they expect a profit from that over spending?

For a lot of movies, I've heard that the studios make most of their money on the backend. I assume that means sh** like intl copyright, BR/DVD, streaming, etc.

Went into Netflix to see if they added any new movies to watch with my wife, and lo and behold what do I see? Tiger King Season 2!

We ended up watching the first episode, and 'ole Joe and the gang with their circus/insane lives didn't disappoint.

Sometimes you just want to watch some mindless, over-the-top shit show TV. :p

Plasmatics throwback?
Saw them with the Dead Kennedys at CBGB while someone broke into my car. Part of her act at the time was firing shotgun blanks into the audience. As someone raised around hunting and guns, any responsible parent teaches their kids that you never, ever point a gun at someone - ever.

Then, on the way home, my "buddy" kept teasing me about someone having my stuff, smoking my weed, etc. Good friend but he still kinda pissed me off/

No Time to Die 6.5/10

5th James Bond movie in the Casino Royale reboot quadrilogy.
Like the 4th movie in the Bourne trilogy, i feel this movie was shoehorned badly to fit the movie arc.

sooooo many plot holes.
a bad guy with vast resources yet noone (cia/mi6/even the bad guys Spectre) knew about him.

Star Wars hero armor.
Mercs are expert shots except shooting at Bond.
I think the movie even makes light of that by Bond just calmly walking away when bad guys fire their machine guns at him.

stupid unbelievable forced scenes.
ie: You know Blofeld is going to die. The way they did looked so dumb.
Just grab him by the throat and squeeze would have been more convincing.

ie2: Bond groveling to the bad guy. cringeworthy...

Paloma (Blue hair chick from Blade Runner 2049) looked sexy but completely laughable in the gun fight.

modern missiles bouncing off a WWII silo hatch?!
etc, etc

edit:
5th bond film with Craig.
Thx juju

Army of the Thieves - 8/10 Best Netflix thriller to date.

Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin - 5/10

i gave up halfway through the first Foundation book, aside from the ludicrous pseudoscience of statistics=precognition, the writing is just obscenely boring.

Heinlein has some dodgy plots and deus-ex-machina but the quality of writing is superb, just a pleasure to read.

Clarke has to be the overall best of the old guard, and hopefully they will make a Rendevouz With Rama film thats visually faithful to the story.

Martian Chronicles (Bradbury) is genius, however it's much closer to Kafka than proper scifi.

I'm not a huge fan of Asimov, but I loved the Foundation series.

I would love a Rendezvous With Rama. The sequels, not written by Clarke, were atrocious and I wish I hadn't read them.

Shang-Chi 5/10

Sounds about right. I'd give it 5/10 as well.

I really wanted to like it. I'm more familiar than the average western viewer on some of the actors. I watched many TV series with Fala Chan (mother of Shang Chi), and Tony Leung is one of my favorite actors since I was a child. But this move just seemed off.

Speaking of Tony Leung, I think I'll go re-watch Infernal Affairs, the move that The Departed was based off of.

The Wheel of Time (Amazon) Episode #1

This is my 2ed all time favorite fantasy series of books after Lord of the Rings so I was hesitant.

So far however they've done okay but if you haven't read the books you'll likely have trouble making much sense of the story beyond magic and monsters attacking. They REALLY needed to do an "intro" to the world like Peter Jackson's LOTR described the original war of the ring to set the stage more effectively.

Too early in the series for an "overall rating" so this is for Episode #1: 6/10

No Time To Die wasnt bad but it also was not terribly exciting. Way too long for a movie where not much happens.

I came across this little goodie on epix horror on demand, for those who get epix. A movie titled MERCY CHRISTMAS (2017). A loser of a guy invited to Christmas dinner where he is the main course, along with other menu items i.e. victims who were abducted and chained in the family's basement awaiting a turn in the oven. Very off beat but one of those weird horror movies you just can't stop watching once you start just to see what happens next. With a good cast of people that I've never heard of Before. I especially liked the grandma. I never thought of Christmas lights as a torture apparatus. Just your typical family sitting around the table holding hands in prayer giving thanks for the bountiful meal they are about to partake. Body parts.

Could this be an overlooked "Sharknado?" I know that oh so many people hate that series with a searing passion. And honestly, after the first one, that is very well deserved. OK, including the first one [sigh]

Oh, and I forgot to tell you guys.

Madam Secretary is very well written and has some excellent actors. Up until now I didnt think Tea Leoni had leading man qualities.
HOWEVER, by the second episode the show had already become formulaic. And I could predict all the major plot points. Not the details, or the plot twists, but the general flow and rhythm really dont change between episodes. Its kind of a shame.
Feels a lot like The West Wing except without aaron sorkins guiding hand. They do cover current issues pretty well, sometimes referring directly to an incident in the news, sometimes using allegories, or analogies.

I give it maybe 6/10, for being entertaining but relying too much on formula.

VEEP is another show I'm watching. Its supposed to be a comedy but nothing really funny happens. I'm up to episode 9 and havent laughed out loud once. It has Larry Davids formula for Curb Your Enthusiasm except loads of swearing, which I guess is considered funny but mostly just comes across as lazy writing. On the other hand, its probably the very best work from Anna Chulmsky.

5/10 for some cynical humor and trying to be entertaining, but failing.

Star Wars Visions 7/10

1637720392683.png

the series consists of nine short films produced by seven Japanese animation studios, each telling their own original stories based on and set within the Star Wars universe.

i only liked 1/3 of the eps.
i fast forwarded through the other 2/3s.

I gave a try to Arcane. It's f fantastic. 8.5/10

It's biggest quality is that is more akin to a TV series than an animation. Even the episodes are 40 min.
I am replying to this to bump Arcane. It is likely one of the best things I've seen, and that's saying a lot. It's tremendously good.

Picard 7/10

Finally finished the TV series. I always have a hard time rating things. I like Star Trek, so it was definitely fun for a watch!

They got me in the end with Data 😭 😭 😭

I feel like some parts were overly simplistic & rushed. Like the magic imagination tool to fix the fused warp cores or whatever, which was then used to project a bunch of fake ships, that was like a low-effort McGuffin lol.

What happened to Narek? They just kind of...forget about him lol.

So many fun appearances. 7 of 9 was definitely unexpected! It was fun having Data play the "dad", and it was fun to see him as Data again. Riker cooking pizza, A+ lol.

The graphics & set design were really fun.

I would have liked to have seen this as like a 20-episode series that was a lot more complex. Like dig more into the Tal Shiar infiltration of Star Trek, have more complex mysteries to solve a long the way, etc. Like when 7 of 9 killed the sister, it was kind of...anti-climatic.

I'd like to see a couple spinoffs: first, one with the xB's, and like maybe hacking into the Borg Collective or something cool. Also curious if the Borg would see Robo-Picard as Locutus in his golem body lol. Second, the Spanish captain guy should definitely get his own show, especially with him playing all of his hologram characters.

Sixth Sense - 8/10. Watched it because my wife had never seen it - still excellent, even though I knew the twist.

6UnderGround - watched it because I was having trouble sleeping - 2/10. This movie should be buried under ground.

Hanah (Series) - Pretty good, could have been better - 7/10. Too much stupid stuff at the end (bad guys couldn't shoot a rhino at 10 ft, good guys sneak around in the open w/o being seen, etc.).
