Most of what we've been watching lately has been some shows we never got around to watching before.

First, we just finished the 2nd season of 'Better Call Saul'. We watched the first season a few months back, but took a long break from it because we binge watched all of 'Breaking Bad' late last year (never watched it when it was airing on cable). 9/10

Second, in between the 1st Nx 2nd season of Saul, we decided to try out 'West World'. We finished the 1st season of that, and we were really impressed by it. This was one of the few shows we've watched that I really could never guess what twist was coming next. 9/10

Finally, we watched the new Mortal Kombat tonight with our youngest son (oldest didn't want to watch it at all). While not what I call great (the casting was off for a few of the characters IMO), I really enjoyed it and it was a lot better than the other Kombat movies by far. I'd say a solid 7.5 / 10.

It was a reboot. It wasn't a 3rd MK movie. So that's why it had the same premise as the past movie/games. I mean each game is a tournament about Mortal Kombat so I'm not sure why you'd expect something different. It also was using current MK games for lore not just the OG games like the OG movies.
It's okay to love something someone else didn't. You don't need to justify yourself.

Yeah, watched Mortal Kombat (2021) last night. Overall 4/10. Only redeeming value was Kano, who happened to be kind of funny a few times. Otherwise it was a bunch of bad actors bumbling through a bad script so they could get to mediocre fight scenes and shoehorn in lame video game references. At least the original movie had a banging soundtrack, this one couldn't even pull that off.

Thunder Force 6/10 - I wanted to like this, but it was bad. Octavia Spencer character had nothing to do, and it showed. Melissa McCarthy was good to me ( I've loved her since Mike & Molly), but she couldn't save this.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire 7/10

French movie set in Victorian era France. (English subtitles)

a mother arranges a marriage of her daughter. the Mother needs to send the daughter's portrait to the would be groom.
but daughter would not sit for a painting of her. she's trying to resist the arranged marriage.

female Painter was hired by the mother to paint her daughter's portrait w/o her daughter knowing she's being painted.

Painter and daughter fall in love.

what i didnt like was that the movie showed a great friendship between those 2 and the pregnant maid but it didnt quite fit the story.
or rather added too much to the story.
the friendship could have been a movie on it's own.
wow.. Rotten Tomatoes ranked Lady on Fire as #2 best movie of 2020

In their defense, there wasn't much good stuff released in 2020 (at least nowhere near a normal year).

As long as they didn't rank Wonder Woman 1984 as #1 for 2020, it's OK. :p

Seaspiracy - a must watch for everyone - 10/10

Just finished it. Kinda "meh" to me. I liked the message and stuff at first but then it basically turned into a "don't eat meat" propoganda especially the last 15 minutes.

I do agree with a lot of the message though and know there is a lot of illegal fishing already going on.

the dude that makes these movies is a bit nuts. That's the problem--the message may be sound, but nuttiness takes over and it pretty much sours the content in the end.

It's like Michael Moore.

I finished "Falcon and the Winter Soldier" last night. It was one of my least favorite Marvel series ever. First, credit where credit is due: I liked the cast... Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, & Daniel Bruhl were great - their charisma almost saved the series. The problem is the story sucked, the villain sucked, it was preachy, & it was dreary. The fun factor, on a scale from 1 to 10, was about a 2 for me. It felt much more like a DC superhero show than a Marvel show. Bleh.

Is all the episodes out already? I have been waiting for them all to be released before starting it. I hate the one a week format.

Kimetsu no Yaiba - Mugen Train: This released last week in theaters with a planned digital release on June. One important note is that this movie is a direct continuation of the first season of the show, which isn't something you see a lot in anime... especially with shows based on longer, serialized manga. (Another example is Initial D Third Stage.) Overall, I liked the movie, but you'll most likely enjoy it as long as you like the series. I do have some quibbles about it though. One thing that surprised me a bit is that the animation was not as great as I would've expected it to be. The reason is that animated movies tend to get more time and larger budgets, which usually leads to even better animation than a typical weekly release. The movie didn't have bad animation, but the animation didn't look much different than the series. There was a lot of CG in use at one point, and eh... the CG never looked that great. It reminded me a lot of a CG version of the goo from Ghostbusters 2. Also, they missed some mistakes in proofreading the subtitles.

As my first subtitled movie in the theater, I highly recommend you sit back far enough. The movie will sometimes display subtitles at the top, and sitting up further will make it a bit harder to read.

There has been some potentially strong rumors floating around that the series suffered potentially quite a bit from a huge shift in the story. The problem is that the story, which was already setup back in 2019, heavily revolved around a world-wide pandemic of all things. Yeah... they cut that for obvious reasons. Part of the evidence that people point out is that you'll notice that whenever they talk about things like tuberculosis, you never see the character actually say it. So, the voice lines (and others that altered the plot) are partly ADR'd due to the inability to get all cast members in for reshoots.

As for my thoughts on the show, I wasn't the biggest fan overall. It wasn't bad, but I definitely wasn't champing at the bit to see it each week. Although, I thought that the cast felt largely disengaged with their acting. I just never believed much of the interactions between Sam and Bucky. I think the problem for me is that a large focus was placed on the mental state of the characters, but they didn't do a great job expressing it.

i watched
Mortal Kombat - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0293429/

.. and i gotta tell ya, it was pretty fucking cool.

Let's look at it without prejudice.
1. it suffers from excessive-protagonist-introduction. As all these films do, because you got 10 equally viable protagonists and each needs a bit of backstory, so by two-thirds of the film you are still in the pre-match fase.
They solved this by having a shitton of fighting.

uuh .. that's about the only real fault.

There is a bit of that trope where a guy is injured not depending on the severity of the blow, but purely because script. So a knife stab to the chest is laughable, but getting stabbed with a garden gnome is fatal.
But, it's occasional.

You gotta understand that this is "the film of the videogame", so constant kungfu is almost mandatory. Is there too much fighting? Yes there is. Is there just the right amount of fighting? Well if you came here to see MORTAL KOMBAAAT !! then yes, there is just the right amount of fighting, which is to say, almost constant.

As for THE REST of the film, it's actually pretty decent. Yeah that might be surprising but, it wasn't half bad.

for normal humans: 7/10 - your mindless action popcorn flick, AND some lessons in how to make a merchandise-inspired film that doesnt totally suck.
for Mortal Kombat fans: 8/10 - MOOORTAL KOOMBAAAAAT !!!

NomadLand (2021 Oscar winning film of the year): 9/10

Based on a 2017 non-fiction book about houseless people roaming the US in a RV.
In the film, it follows the life of 1 woman in a van after the big plant (and only major employer) in her small town closes.

sweet & simple film.

the director hired some of the real life people from the book that the author interviewed.
2 of these people played major parts in shaping the star's journey in the movie:

I agree that the film is a miracle selection as anyone's Best Film. I give it a much lower overall score. There is a life here to see, a nomad life, one person's road travels, lived down in the dirt with like situated individuals where prospects for personal enhancement and renewal are eschewed, and in any case minuscule, like the chance of winning a lottery.
Unfortunately the film leaves unaddressed the attraction of this nomad life, why sitting around open fires remembering the good old days and deceased companions is life enough, dealing instead with how thorough the endless vista of open road, poverty and meaningless connections among fellow travelers can be.

Its a pure vision for sure , but then so would be a road kill film.Lets spend two hours contemplating that .

6/10

Does any of you nerds remember what film this is ?

Circa 2000 IRL, set in space, on - i think - a spaceship. The crew is made up 100% of magazine-cover M&F models, there's far too many (simulated) sex scenes, and it's absolutely atrocious.
Like, you would remember "this is too many sex scenes" and "why does everyone on this ship look like they are a cover model".
And also that it was bad.
Oh and in space.

I've done my "list all scifi films of 200X" googling but cannot find it. They must have been so embarassed that they deleted it from existence.

Space Whores in Space?
no, it was a genuine A- title. Released in theaters.

Aside from remembering how bad it was, i think there was an alien entity that made the crew do bad stuff, and i think the sex was meant to have something to do with it, either it made the crew more sensitive to the attack of the alien, or it was a result of the alien's manipulation.

Like, they made this film to be good.

But it sucked.

nooo, these are not bad, these are goodbad. (Also, really? you put Barbarella in with this trash?)

Anyway, i found it in the end, it's Supernova (2000) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0134983/
current IMDb rating 4.9/10

Absolute garbage. You know, i love a nice pair of titties, but this film manages to screw up even that. How do you screw up tits !! I'm trying to get my mind into a Science Fiction mood, and the BAM! there's a big ol pair of titties on the screen, and my brain is like "are we watching porn now?"
