Happy Time Murders (Melissa McCarthy and the muppets). 5/10 as a movie per se, but 7.5/10 as raunchy, escapist humor. My wife is a fan of Melissa McCarthy and she is funny in her own way, but her act is wearing thin, as I think the box office of her latest couple of movies is showing.

I watched for the fourth time Romanzo Criminale

Now, y'all might have a hard time finding this because it's in Italian, and even subbed you'd likely miss half of what is going on. Which is a shame.

Loosely based on the ... FACTUALLY based on the exploits of the Banda Della Magliana gang - but since in Italy you couldn't legally prove that water is wet, the "loosely based on" is the best they can write, it tells the story of a group of ghetto hoodlums who grow up to be the largest criminal organization of the capital, and the various political manipulations of the other players, from the Red Brigades to various US secret service black flag groups.

Very cool, very well made, but, alas, too hermetic for many.

8.5/10

and since i watched something good, i balanced it out with something not good

The Men Who Stare At Goats

Starring George Clooney. And also The Dude, Kevin Im A Gay Man Now Spacey, and Ewan Actually A Jedi McGregor.

Tbh not quite as bad as i remembered it.

TMWSAG tells the story of MK Ultra's idiot brother, the fictitious (i hope) New Earth Army, a group of US soldiers who are led by a stoner through "psychic" training. One such result is Clooney, who is fully convinced he has Jedi powers. Tagging along is a failed journalist who wants to write the story of this army moron who thinks he can walk through walls. Together they go on a crazy journey and defeat the barely evil convenience villain Spacey. Was it all a dream, or do mystic powers really exist???
(no. they dont)

Ok so not Clooney's best, more so after the excellent Oh Brother, but reasonably pleasant. You do, however, have to pay *much* attention to the dialogue because much of the plot advancement detail is hidden in Clooney and Bridges' mumbling dialogue.

It could have been better.

6.9/10 exactly, not a 0.1 more

Jack Ryan on Amazon 8.0/10. From my experience, and based on what I have learned from these situations, the TV show made a very relatable version of events. From why someone from a middle eastern country might hate the US, and make it their life long goal to extract revenge. How they operate, and gain support from other like minded people. How they use propaganda and attacks to fuel hatred and revenge. I think they picked a good character for Jack, as he was affable but could also get tactical when needed. Looks to be more coming and I look forward to them. 8 episodes, but a quick watch as many are in the 40+ min range.

The Innocents on Netflix 7/10. Set overseas, which I like. Lots of shows are doing this now. Guy Pierce does a good job in his part, everyone else was unknown to me. Very interesting series once you understand what Guy's character is trying to do. Basic synopsis is that certain people can "shift" into others. Take their form exactly. Which leads to a series of events when people are trying to figure out what is happening and why it is. It's built as a love story, and it is. Not just now you think at first. I enjoyed it and recommend it to anyone looking for a good thriller TV show.

Ozark Season 2 on Netflix 8.5/10. Much like the first season, but with more of everything.

The After Party on Netflix 6/10. Fun watch, not deep or anything remotely great. Funny movie about an aspiring rapper and his best friend who is also his producer. Many, many real rappers in it. And it has Teyana Talyer, who is just amazing. If you are unaware, watch her in Kanye's Fade video. You're welcome.

The Package on Netflix 6/10. Just a dumb comedy about friends who go for a hike and something terrible happens, and their endeavors to fix it. Some pretty funny moments, but also very forgettable.

Yellowstone on Paramount 9/10. Finished it up, and just a very, very good mini series. Rancher who owns a huge amount of land, and those who try to take it from him. A series drama with Kevin Costner in it. Just a very well done TV mini series, that I can't really go into too much without giving stuff away.

The 100 season 5 was good too. Little sad at the end, but I am excited about the possibilities of the next season. Just a really good series.

Miles Ahead - 7.5/10

Semi biographical account of a period of Miles Davis life as imagined by Writer/Director & actor - Don Cheadle. Extreme creative liberty was given and you end up with one really good movie. It's a good time if you're a fan of character studies.

Tampopo - 9/10
If you are a fan of film then you have already seen this movie, but if you have not - then this is a must watch. The erotic food porn is "whoah". The parallels to Italian westerns as well.

Did you like Brickleberry? This is just Brickleberry only now they are cops, they even make some jokes about it. Took a few episodes to get into but once I did I really enjoyed it. Being on Netflix they could be even more obscene than they were on Comedy Central.

Snagged Deadpool 2 from Redbox but had I remembered Jack Ryan started today I may have not.
I'm really liking Jack Ryan. I've been waiting for like a year for it and it did not disappoint (I think I'm about halfway through episode 5). I just wish there was more than 8 episodes.

And oh shit Man in the High Castle is tomorrow?! WOOT WOOT

I have 2 episodes of Jack Ryan left and plan on finishing it tonight if my wife wants to, which I'm pretty sure she will, since we have nothing else on TV tonight.

Jack Ryan - 9/10 - loved every minute of this show and the acting was pretty good. The chemistry between Jack and the black dude from The Wire was great, and you could really see how they grew their partnership. I just wish it was more than 8 episodes.

Get Shorty - 8/10 (tv serial, not the movie)

There's some graphic violence but for the most part, the show is fairly funny, even during some of the more serious and violent scenes. Five episodes have aired so far on Epix (which I don't get but . . . you know). It's on Sunday nights so there's a lot of competition but it's worth checking out.

The main characters are partially caricatures of themselves but I think that's done for comedic effect. Otherwise there's good character development and you develop a certain amount of sympathy for them despite some of the horrible things they do. It reminds me a little bit of Pulp Fiction but with more depth.

Just discovered this and I'm power-watching season 1 (season 2 has already begun). SOLID 8/10. I love Chris O'Dowd. And Ray Romano is also great in his role.

I agree with your assessment. I think we are in around episode 5 or 6. Good series, but the whole hamfisting of the drone guy's guilt was laid on a little much.

If it weren't for that weird one off story line, I probably would have given it a 10/10. It felt extremely forced and just added nothing to the overall story that was told. And that actor was really bad, as was his partner and the couple.

Just finished Ozark season 2.

Wow, stuff is getting dark in season 2. Starting to remind me of Breaking Bad when Walter White starts going off the rails.
Not saying its Marty Byrde, but a lot of the characters are starting to lose their way.
I give it 8/10.

Just started it. I thought season 1 was pretty dark.

I watched The Conjuring

What a lovely film.
Ok lets get the obvious out of the way, this is the exact same film as Poltergeist; happy family -> spooky horror -> paranormal investigators enter -> action horror -> happy ending.

But it's a great film. I didnt catch the director using a single boring trope, which is quite a feat in horror films.
Good acting from the girls, mediocre from the boys, good casting but i wasnt happy with the male lead, seems too detached.

I gotta give it 8/10 Spooooky !!

The Conjuring is probably the best horror movie I've seen in the past decade. Very creepy atmosphere and just a creepy movie.

Also, if I remember correctly ...
no one even dies in the movie, which if you think about, has like never ever happened in a horror movie.

Indeed you are right, but they dont feed you that right at the start, instead they keep up the suspense.

I cant help think of two other horror masterpieces i have seen in the past, Triangle and The Ring.

Triangle - with its poor production and all - has brilliant writing. You dont need to be a horror fan to like it.

The Ring is imho what best captures the experience of a Call of Cthulhu investigation; you know you are fucked, you just soldier on hoping to get something done before you die. And the protagonist makes all intelligent choices, yet somehow still faces obstacles without cheesy writing stepping in.

The Conjuring is your mom n pop horror film. Ghosts. Creaking floors. Talking with spirits, and evil toys.
And yet somehow manages to not fall into the same boring overused tropes. Even the jumpscares are genuinely well placed.

It doesnt even matter that it's a horror film; it's like they said "watch me make a horror that doesnt suck" and succeeded.
Really good filmmaking.

The Mayans (pilot episode) - 6 or 7 out of 10 - kinda left it with a big fat "meh" feeling. I'll give it a chance still but definitely not close to the level that SOA was. Kind of cheesy and cliche and the acting is very suspect. And the fact that they are dropping f-bombs on FX now feels very forced and unnecessary.

I caught the movie ‘A Quiet Place’ recently on PPV and thought it was really pretty good. Interesting premise and it kept me on the edge of my seat. Not a very long movie but it was good. I’d give it a solid 7/10.
