Sword of the stranger - 8/10 A swordsman from a strange land reluctantly agrees to take a raggedy boy and his dog to a remote, Buddhist temple.
Ninja Scroll - 7.5/10 A vagabond swordsman is aided by a beautiful ninja girl and a crafty spy in confronting a demonic clan of killers.
Jin - Roh - 7.5/10 A traumatized member of an elite para-military police force is caught in the power struggle between the movies 2 police forces.

All 3 above average animes, worth a watch for pure entertainment. Jin-Roh requires a little attention, but the other 2, just sit back on your couch and enjoy.

Hacksaw Ridge - 9/10

Mel Gibson might be an anti-Semite nutter but he makes original and entertaining movies. This is a well-written adaptation of a true story with a very good cast and some amazing visuals of the carnage of war.

I've never watched Andrew "Hates Mondays" Garfield's turn as Spider-man but based on his good work here the blame for that mess goes to the writers and directors not him.

The Terror - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2708480/

finished the last episode just this morning, which has concluded the series. SPOILERS BELOW

I was hoping for something greater, but i am satisfied. The series could have used a change of pacing, dedicating more importance to some plot developments rather than other, and the main challenge was not highlighted as the plot, but rather as the framing device - i.e. "while our heroes are stuck in the artic, they face off a mysterious beast" it should have been "our heroes are stuck in the artic, and must return home, all the while facing off a mysterious beast". Subtle differences, but which would have made the show great rather than just enjoyable.

Also, strange decision on the visual design of the beast. And i feel they have gone too quickly from "crew feeling well" to "complete psychotic breakdown", and the deterioration of their health is actually a major plot point and could have been milked more, and better.

The sets on the ice were horrid. At no time i thought they were actually on ice, but rather next to some weird balls of polystyrene or whatnot. Also the EP could have looked into what artic wind looks like.
The interior sets were on point, as were the costumes. The Inuit costumes were likely actual Inuit clothing, or otherwise they are the best film costumes i've ever seen.

all in all not a waste of time and a rather enjoyable series.

7/10 - next time just hire Brendan Gleeson

I'll agree with most of this. I did enjoy the show overall. I liked the dialogue, clothing, the pace, the sense of duty by most men. I also give it a 7/10, could have easily been higher though.

Lost in Space - 6 to 8/10 on netflix

Season 1, 10 part series started out a little slow but by the 3rd episode it started to get more interesting. The last 2-3 were the best. They went over bit on the "we are family" and the poor father that can never do good routine. They'll have to be another season as in the end that's when it all gets started. ;)

And what happened to whatever Alien thing was attached to the bottom of the river in the last episode?

Not as much humor as the originals. Dr. Smith really pissed me off, as she was supposed to I guess. So many totally unreal things that just annoyed me though, not to mention cut scene screw ups. Guy wearing a necklace, screen cuts away for a few seconds and comes back, necklace is gone. Things like that just annoy the hell out of me. 8/10.

oh boy, i didn't expect this to be so good. the dialogue is excellent and the delivery is perfect. i think i cried a couple of times.

The story is deceptively simple, and it more serves as a tool to carry little small touches of elegance in film writing. it's gonna take me a few repeat viewing to take it all in, but i'm not sure if this film has the pacing that lends itself to that; and i thought that the soundtrack was very weak. But otherwise, this looks like it's gonna be a

didn't like the story line.
why couldn't they bring the kid with them to wakanda instead of leaving him?

you knew it was going to be armor vs armor at the sonic train tracks once the kid got the armor.

Thor Ragnarok - 7/10

A bit too much lowbrow comedy for my tastes, but some great visuals and action scenes.

(I prefer the middlebrow humor of Deadpool and GotG.)

Annihilation. yet another sci-fi movie that leaves me hanging and unsatisfied with no clue what aliens want or if real.

starring surferdude.

post 9/11 story of mmuricans pewpewing afghans. well made and well acted but i just couldn't get into the sentiments of brave patriotism. you might like it more than i did.

chris hemsworth is a brand new officer who deploys to afghanistan right after the 9/11 attacks. he's in a small team that needs to kill a huge number of talibans, and in order to do so he has to work together with other afghans and a russian colonel. not much of a moral-thing going, rather hemsworth is the personification of america's fury and retribution. yawn.

I like modern westerns and I enjoyed this one too. Pretty violent and brutal though. I didn't quite get why the President wanted the warchief escorted back to their homeland.

Justice League - 9/10 - went into this last weekend without any expectations at all and really didn't know much about it. I didn't even know which super heroes were in it other than Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman. It was a breath of fresh air to me and I just thought it was a really fun movie. Typically I enjoy the super hero movies about the "coming of" the super heroes, and even though the characters were already there, the Justice League wasn't, so I really enjoyed seeing how they came about.

LOST is squarely in the reward view mirror now (where it probably belongs) but it's still fun to rewatch some of it from time to time.

Everybody seems to have the same recollection: A few good seasons followed by a few average ones followed by a bad one.

How can people so easily forget the awfulness that was the beginning of season 2? That show was turning into an absolute mess with no idea of where to go or what to do, tinged with silly religious subtexts and marred by pointless episodes. I don't think it would have made a third season without Henry/Benjamin joining the cast.
The beginning of season 3 was WAY worse than season 2. All of those filler episodes with Jack, Kate, and Sawyer locked up. It was treading water.

Wow....

Just watched Arrival. Preliminary score here of 10/10. To be clear, to be 10/10 doesn't mean it's the single best movie or that it's perfect, it just means it was fantastic and had something really special. This movie had that. I don't even know what to say about it but I need to find more movies like this.

EDIT: What do you know, same director as Blade Runner 2049. I like this guy's style. Guess I'll watch Prisoners next.
Prisoners was god damned great.

Slow moving. Minimal dialogue. Minimal story arch.
I loved it.
I'm a sucker for these types of "westerns" though and anything that has Bale or Wes Studi.
While her role is very small, Q'orianka Kilcher is painfully easy on the eyes.
I fell asleep in the theater.

The Post 8/10 A patriotic movie.

It does start off a little slow but it's a drama not a chase seen movie. What was technically interesting is how much work went into printing a paper before the days of computers. All the type had to be set manually for each article every day, Amazing.

As for the politics its most relevant now showing the power of the 1s amendment and what people will do to fight injustice. These people are heros in my mind. While we all know what happens in the end like Apollo 13 nevertheless it was perfect, I cheered.

Annihilation - 6.5
Really enjoyed the mystery and suspense built up but felt the movie never made clear what the Shimmer was all about. Would it be so hard to just give a clue about where it came from and why?

Monolith - 4
So a blonde still can't avoid getting herself into trouble even when given the most smartest and safest car ever developed. Ok, got it.

The Greatest Showman - 6.5
I generally hate musicals but tolerated it to see if I'll learn a little about Barnum and how the circus came about. Well that didn't really happened but overall the movie wasn't too bad.

Visually its quite nice but the overly stereotyped characters soon drag the story into mediocrity.
The show may be more appealing if you are looking for some family friendly sci-fi

A Quiet Place - 6.5/10

For it's actual genre, I'd give it another 1.5 stars I think but from a standard "movie" standpoint, I'll stick with 6.5 - 7 at best.
It was good, but in no way should it be getting the lavish praise that it has been receiving. It's definitely "new" and "different" I guess. But for me and my wife, and from what I could overhear from the people around us the ending was pretty horrible. The acting, including the kids, was pretty impressive; especially based on the fact they didn't have many lines if actual dialogue to work with so they had to convey a lot of emotion and story with facial and body gestures. Usually I don't nit-pick story line gaps or flaws, but there were some stupid items in this movie that irked me (in spoiler tags)

It did keep you paying attention and on the edge of your seat - no question about that (hence the higher grade for the genre) It was entirely riveting throughout and was nicely paced.

  1. When he lit the fire on top the silo, there were like 10 other fires "responding" within a 1-2 miles radius. Seems to me that lots of people survived?
  2. Given the situation, and being 400+ days in, why on Earth would they have another baby? A BABY of all things. One of the loudest and most uncontrollable and unpredictable things in the world?!
  3. In the very beginning, they are in that town gathering supplies - specifically medication. Why not take ALL the medication? And they had apparently been there before as indicated by the paths of sand. Yet there was tons of supplies still in the store?
  4. Wouldn't you spend more time by the river/waterfall? And your kids would be away that sound drowns out other noises?
  5. And lets talk about that sand... they sure spread a lot of it
  6. The ending? What? Huh? you can just shoot them? Seems I'd have a gun on me at all times.

A Quiet Place - 9/10 - Just came back from a matinee - I never give 10s as it sort of loses its meaning, but I saw nearly nothing wrong with this movie. There was maybe 1 detail about the nail, but it wasn't important enough to be a factor. The fact that you had to listen and stay quiet yourself in this movie made it that much more enveloping. Acting was great all around, including the kid actors who had pretty significant roles. The aliens were superbly done and you get a great look at them too. The pace was also pretty good - shorter movies get you more meaningful scenes. All in all, a great thriller and worth all of my $5 (thx TMobile Tuesdays for the deal). Probably the only movie I'll go to in a theater all year.

P.S.: John Krasinski, who also wrote/directed this, is my new favorite male actor.

A Quiet Place - 9/10 - Agree with rh71. From start to finish it's a riveting thriller and worthy of your time in the theater. Don't order popcorn, and get your candy wrappers open before the movie starts.

Hunger - 9/10. Steve McQueen is an incredible director/writer. Definitely watch it if you haven't seen it, but be prepared for a slight kick to the gut.

Tommy Boy - 8/10. I miss these really great 90s comedies that the whole family can watch but is still somewhat on the edge of what's appropriate.
