The book is great, but more for the prose, not really the story which is why movie versions do not really work that well...

KT

In high school they taught it saying it was great because of old money vs. new money and all the imagery.

I need to read it again.

If someone isn't interested in a story about romance, hope, complexities with issues of class, wealth, and corruption, well .. they should watch Transformers once more ;)

It appears my opinion is rather justified ;)
I hate using Rotten Tomatoes to back up my feelings, but it's not just me finding it a pile of poo.

If you are implying i'm too dumb to appreciate good film and only like action flicks, you'd be very mistaken. :p

50/50 critics and 69% of audience is more than half of people liking it :D

I don't think I'd have liked it as much without intimately knowing the story from the novel, but I did so I did :)

Got a chance to catch "End of Watch" last night. I agree with others that this one really snuck under the radar. It was a fantastic movie. Jake G and especially Michael Pena were incredible. The chemistry these two had was amazing. You literally felt like these two guys had known each other for years and were actually just two guys on the job.

Very gritty movie, the pacing was excellent, and just hit all the checkmarks of a great movie.

The "documentary" style camera work can definitely a turn off to some people. I know my wife would have been motion sick after the opening sequence, but overall it wasn't as bad as say Cloverfield or Chronicles.

The World's End - 7.5/10: I was a bit torn exactly how I wanted to score this one. It still had that same precise, witty writing that makes the other movies in the Three Flavors Cornetto trilogy a treat to watch. Ultimate, I scored it based on the following: Hot Fuzz > The World's End > Shaun of the Dead. Yarp, I thought that Hot Fuzz just simply had better humor, and The World's End does get a bit weird. I'd still recommend seeing it though.

Star Trek Into Darkness - 7/10 - So..I liked this, probably not as much as the first one, but it was enjoyable. I liked the timeline twists as well. I have a few nags that might throw people off because they are little things that bugged me right away.

The title...WTF. It just...well...doesn't really fit. I get what they are trying to say (on multiple levels), but it still just doesn't fit. I would expect a film that says Into Darkness, to be well...dark and brooding and apocalyptic, true bloodlust, something. It wasn't....at best they should have just called it Star Trek Vengeance (works for either antagonist or protagonist) Secondly, the intro to the movie when they show the title, the Star Trek theme is playing which is entirely too light and happy while they are unveiling the title. Just didn't fit (but a minor issue of course).

Otherwise, I found it enjoyable. :)

Looper 9/10

First - great bluray video and audio quality. You really got a feel for the various seens through the movie. The guns had a nice kick to them as well which I always appriciate.

A very enjoyable movie. I liked how it played with time travel and found the 'Dr.' scene with the older looper towards the beginning very unnerving. I saw the ending coming a bit before it happened because there was really only one way out but for most of it I was kept guessing about relationships and how far the characters would be willing to go. I would definitely watch again

Savages - 8.5/10

I went into this preparing to being annoyed, especially by Blake Lively and Taylor Kitsch. To my utter surprise I was not only un-annoyed but actually captivated by their performances. This has to be the best work that they've ever done.

The other characters are great as well: Salma Hayak as a vicious drug lord who's only weakness is for her daughter, John Travolta as a slimy DEA agent with a dying wife (I'll be damned if he's not starting to resemble Mel Brooks), some dude I've never seen before as the third member of the menage-a-trois, and especially Benicio Del Toro as a sub-human cartel hit man; he is the true savage in this tale.

imo the "ending" is worthy of some pretty juicy debate. I'm inclined to believe that the test audiences had a hand in determining the final cut. But make no mistake - this is an enjoyable flick. Oliver Stone has absorbed some influences from Tarantino, and if this film is any indication it might be a good thing

I really did enjoy it. To be honest I think the daughter weakness was over the top but a suprisingly interesting movie. I'd give it slightly less but 8/10 is still good

Never heard of this till I saw it show up in my Neflix Top Ten streaming section. Hate to just copy a review off Netflix but Constantine + Van Helsing and you kind of get this. Good settings and the CGI effects were ok. As far as streaming movies go it is pretty good.

Thats exactly how i felt. I got it as a random, ill watch this sometimes movie, ended up watching it and really enjoyed it. Your review hits it right on the head for how i felt about it.

Oblivion - 6.5/10 - Thought it was interesting and a decent story. But it reminded me a lot of Moon to be honest. Kept me entertained but didnt think it was anything special. Worth seeing as a movie but only if there isnt something else kind of thing for me.

Elysium - 5/10. I just didnt get into this all that much. The story was ok but pretty predictable. The action scenes were very "bourne esque" in how they were filmed IMO. Lots of up close camera moving around fast kind of stuff. I didnt mind it in Bourne movies but in Elysium it bugged me a bit a few times. Its a movie I'd get to watch when i am sick sort of deal. Can miss 10-20 minutes of it and not really miss anything to important to ruin the story. I also didnt think you really got ot know the characters that well either. Much preferred District 9 over this one.

At least you found out about it before it ends this coming season. :p

I only ever watched the first few episodes, but for some reason, I never kept watching. Given that I did the same with Arrow back when it first came out, that seems to be a reoccurring theme with CW shows. Although, I did go back and watch all of season one of Arrow.

Is anyone planning on seeing "The Grandmaster"? I haven't been to the theater in a long, long time, but contemplating it for this film. I'm not one of those "ninja" movie fans, but two of favorite movies in the genre are "Hero" and "Kung Fu Hustle". This looks to be a combo of those two, in a way.

Looking forward to seeing reviews if anyone sees it.

It's more drama than anything else. I found it boring.

We're the Millers -- 7.5/10
Good but not great. Enjoyable enough that we'll probably catch it again once it shows up on Netflix.

The World's End -- 8/10
I'm not really sure. It was good, but bordered on being too weird for me. I felt the same way about Hot Fuzz the first time I saw that, and that's now one of my favorites....so I'll have to give it another watch. For now, a tentative 8/10.

Iron Man 3 - 6/10

Not sure what the deal is, but its like they wanted to make an Iron Man movie without Stark actually being in armor.
And PED humans strong enough to rip apart Iron man's armor? And The Mandarin not actually a Mandarin, with power rings or martial art mastery...what a waste. He is supposed to be one of Iron Man's greatest foes. And whats with that stupid kid?
I expected more from Shane Black.
