Good old FVWM2 can be quite lightweight and even look pretty good if you spend some time configuring it. There are several that bill themselves as "minimalist" listed on the "Others" page of xwinman.org. Have you tried XFCE? It's more than just a Window Manager, but it's still remarkably light for the functionality it provides.
If GNOME's panel does what you need, you might consider running it without running nautilus. That cuts a decent amount of resources out. Maybe it's even possible to run the panel without running gnome-session?Originally posted by: sigs3gv
Yea, I have but the thing I didn't like about it was that I could not move the taskbar or configure it in any way.
