Your take on controls is a bit dated and misleading because they have done a very good job of making them unintrusive, but I understand your point. If you don't even use a DS/PSP etc theres no reason anything like that would apply.

hmm, so these mobile versions don't have the direction pad taking up the screen? (again: mobile = phone; portable = dedicated gaming device--DS--in my vernacular)

How do you move your character around? Every generic jrpg-type game I have seen on google play uses that direction pad. (honestly, I don't see any way around it.)

I just couldn't get into FNV.... I don't know, I just couldn't. The fighting mechanic that is an awkward hybrid of real-time or turn-based threw me off. And I didn't have patience once I got outside and visited the first boring town. I quit then. Maybe I should try again.

As for Metro 2033, you liked it a lot? The game didn't exactly have super hot reviews to begin with.
I never thought I'd like RPGs - I'm a shooter guy - but to me Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas are simply shooters with a LOT of background story. They are bullet sponge games to be sure, but there are mods which make combat a lot more deadly and level progression a lot more slow which tilt it more toward shooter for those of us who prefer that kind of game, while the VAT means that those not able or just not fond of playing twitch shooters can still enjoy the world without combat ruining it. Since I always progress my guns skill quickly, I minimize seeing my character miss a monster literally ten feet away, so it has more of a shooter feel, plus some mods remove skill-based shooting altogether which makes combat essentially a pure shooter. And I really, really like the exploring versus being led around by the nose.

For the other, I really liked both Metro games, although I'm not at all fond of dying from running out of filters when I'd really like to be spending time exploring the world. They are very linear games, but I like the unique Russian/Ukrainian atmosphere. Combat was pretty challenging too.

In my experience, it's generally just a tap-to-move, if you need to attack, you use basic attack automagically kind of deal. If you want to use a skill, those are buttons lining the bottom/corners of the screen.

I got that origin humble bundle and have tried out a few games so far

Dead Space - 7/10

So far it is good but what kills it are the crappy mouse controls, it is really annoying that he aims so slow even with the mouse sensitivity cranked up all the way.

Red Alert 3 Uprising - 4/10

Maybe I am just not good at strategy games but this is a bit hard for me. They throw you to the wolves with no mercy. The path-finding to be pretty bad. I played a few levels of the russian campaign but am not sure if I will continue playing, at least for a while.

What card? If nvidia, turn vsync off in the game, then force it on in the Nvidia control panel (instead of let app choose). Fixes the issue. There's a similar procedure for AMD, however I never had the issue with the AMD card I had.

I seriously would use a 360 pad to get the most enjoyment out of DS.

Darksiders 2 - 9.5/10 Wow.....what an awesome game,,,,It was huuuge compared to the first, I loved the addition of the Soul arbitors maze....I wish you could have completed all levels in the crucible on playthrough 1 though.

Tomb Raider - 8/10 I really had fun playing this...I thought the combat was well done and actually enjoyed the meele action more than the shooting, especially when you get the "finish" kills...just wished there were a few more challenging puzzles/tombs.

Heroes and Generals (9/10) -
I know alot of games but I had to pick H&G simply because of its World War 2 feel. It is the only games that has given me a full World War 2 feel, It is also a unique idea mixing RTS with FPS is an amazing idea. All of that and it is Free to play, graphics aren't bad either allowing average PC's to run it. I would have given it 10/10 but because of some minor bugs it has lost a point.

Planetside 2 (10/10) -
10/10 because of the games sheer scale, it can become a drag when you play solo but with friends, oh wow!

Tomb Raider - 6/10

This isn't Tomb Raider, except that is has Lara Croft. It is Far Cry + Max Payne + small linear areas. Where are the movement puzzles? Oh you mean that single ledge to climb up to the next small area you 'run' around? Or perhaps that tomb that takes <2 minutes to figure out and climb to the top of?

Great production values and story make this a hit; the gameplay sucks though, and is definitely not Tomb Raider gameplay. Feels just like FC, MP, or even the latest Deus Ex - generic game wrapped in pretty clothing. So glad I didn't spend full price on this.

Hearthstone [7.5/10]: Am I lucky or are they sending massive invites? I signed up for my Blizz account 2 days ago and opted in for the beta. Today I got the invite. I spent about good 3 hours on it. The game is fun for sure, but I'm not having fun as much as I had anticipated.

Hearthstone-UI-Guide.jpg

Much of the gameplay is similar- you summon minions, get a tank (taunt), summon buffers, sprinkle bunch of spells. That's it. I'm sure the game gets much more complex later, but I don't see it departing from the formula.

FTL has genuinely different approaches to beating the game (I know it's a different game altogether)- You can beat them with lasers and rockets or swarm them with Drones, and my favorite- board their ship and murder their crews with your fighters.

I wish Hearthstone's fundamental design supported truly different play- like minion-less spellcaster or mana-shield tanky approach, etc.

All in all, the game boasts Blizzard's signature polish. The overall presentation is great. And it's good to see Warcraft lore characters making appearance.

Let me know if the game truly turns out to be different later on, but from what I've seen, I don't think so. I hope I'm wrong.

Shadow Warrior (2013) [5/10]: I read good things about it from you guys. Unfortunately the game was very... plain. It's the same formula of FPS and add some shallow RPG element just like Crysis 2/3.

I haven't touched the game after about an hour of play. At least Crysis had amazingly fun stealth approach.

papers, please - 9.5/10 - i can't really explain this one. a few friends recommended it to me because they thought it was something i'd like. i absolutely fell in love with this game. it's a simple concept, but the game can be quite difficult at times. there's also some tough decisions in the game. do i eat a citation to let this guy through the border? do i let someone through who claims they'll be killed if not? should i take a bribe to let this person through? or do you just deny everyone w/o the proper paperwork because fuck you :p it's amazing.

hammerwatch - 7.5/10 - this one is really fun. it's some nice old-school dungeon crawling. perhaps not as fun single-player, but it's quite fun with friends. i wish the game was a bit more fleshed out with more classes and enemies, but it's a blast nevertheless.

next on my to play list is: a virus named tom, more terraria, and monaco.

Bought Bioshock 2 when released. Played through it the past week. I'd give it an 8/10.

Spelunky 8,5/10 Pretty fun and hard game, after some hours you learn how to not die instantly. 30hs into it and i still couldnt beat the game, im kinda getting tired of it, but 30hs is pretty awesome for a silly roguelke game

Risk of Rain 9/10 - Great roguelike! and it has the nice addition of 4 players coop (local or online, but online is much better). Unlocking new characters is fun and each of them is different. it has 3 difficulty settings but Normal and hard are thought to be played with friends. I still couldnt gather a 4 players team :S

Binding of Isaac, wrath of the lamb - 3/10

I picked it up off the humble bundle sale. It was fun at first but quickly became annoying. I actually beat it a couple of times until I got fed up with trying to advance and deleted the game. I understand people wanting a challenge but this game is a flat out dice roll with the odds stacked against you. You can't really tell what particular way the game will screw you until you get to the later levels. You waste a bunch of time only to realize there is no way you are going to beat the final boss with what you have and restart.

I guess people who like crappy games like super meatboy might like this but for me it ended it pure frustration. And I have nothing against the rogue-like games, I freaking loved FTL.

I've played both (and probably every well known roguelike there is) and...isnt FTL more or less the same? if you get bad random encounters you know you are screw for the final combat. If you get a run in which the shop never has anything useful or your crew dies just because of random choices you cant do much

Randomness is a big part of Roguelikes

I don't think that is quite fair. The game gives you lots of chances to make up for a few bad drops. I would say that I beat the Cathedral or Shoal at least 2/3 tries. But then I have like 200 hours in the game and am working on unlocking the last few items so I can finally face the final boss.
