list of softwares for ubuntu??

theres a list of softwares for windows thread. can we have something similar for linux?

im ready to make the switch to ubuntu, but dont know if there are windows alternative software and where to get them.

photoshop -> gimp?
ms office -> open office?
dreamweaver - ???
newsgroup - ?
ftp - ?

The list is always changing.

Linux is a moving target and so is the software that runs on it.

For example a Dreamweaver alternatives is Quanta Plus, which is something that is pretty new.

After you install Ubuntu one way to find software is open up your GUI package manager and snoop around there. There are literally thousands of software packages that you can download and install with a click of the mouse. Make sure that universe and multiverse package repos are enabled for lots and lots of extra software.

Check out mythtv for your media needs. It's got a decent learning curve for installing and setting up, but Ubuntu has really good support for it.

Your soundcard should be working right out of the box, check your sound mixer levels to make sure your volumes are turned up.

As crusty said, most of the multimedia stuff is mythtv. I don't think the atihdtv650 has a driver (could be wrong), but there are some excellent hdtv capture/tuner cards for linux. Check out pchdtv. The drivers should be available in the kernel.

I'm not sure how many features of premiere you use, but there are video editors for linux.

It's not that expensive. You just got a good deal on that 650. Most I've seen are about the same price as a pchdtv.

But it would be amusing to buy it because then you can have one card that is not supported in Linux and another card that is not supported in Windows!

One thing that I think was very neat was the HD homerun. It's a network-based device that takes HD and streams it over ethernet. It has dual tuners and can be found for around 170 dollars.

It's worth it though if you can setup a dedicated Mythtv box. With the exception of the fact that it can be tricky to setup Mythtv beats MCE as bad as a NFL lineman high on crack and PCP taking out a classroom full of screaming school girls. (err.... something like that)

The major reason for this is total and utter disregard for any form of DRM on the part of Mythtv.

FWIW, I love my HDHomerun, but it was a greater challenge to setup and configure in comparison to my Hauppauge PVR-150. Particularly, correlating the SchedulesDirect channel listing data with the channels that the HDHomerun could scan and discover was essentially a manual process. I had to open up the table in the SQL database, and figure out which channels needed which XMLTV ID and enter those values into the table manually.

But for what you get, I think the HDHomerun is the best HD tuner option for MythTV. After I acquire 1 more PVR-150, my MythTV box will have 2 HD tuners and 2 SD tuners, which is pretty convenient and flexible.

ubuntu doesnt support the lenovo x61 laptop. i couldnt download the codecs to play mp3 or media files. i couldnt update anything! apparently i wasnt the only person either. others had to make changes to get it working. these mods do not look easy for a beginner like me

Are you using the latest version (Gutsy)?

A quick search turned up THIS over on UbuntuForums.org but I didn't see anything about codecs/mp3. Did you enable (uncomment) the additional repos in /etc/apt/sources.list?

robor, u gotta slow down...
i did install gutsy. when i click an mp3 file, it wouldnt open...requiring codecs. and when i tried to upgrade/install softwares, it would look like its about to download, but terminated early. the error came and went away so fast, i couldnt read what it said.

that thread you gave me mentioned 32/64 bits installation. i didnt even have that option even though my cpu is intel 2 core dual.

n whats etc/apt/sources.list??? where can i find that? im obviously clueless n never touched linux before.
