Ouch... the Columbia Mall location in Bloomsburg, PA was on that list. That place was already considered to be a "dead" mall, since it only had about 10 stores and a JCPenney left out of 40 stores and 4 "anchor" tenants.

Yeah. Penny's was 1 of 3 remaining anchor stores in our mall, which is damn near dead. It's a huge chunk of property.

One in my hometown and one where I went to college. The first one I'm not surprised about, the second one I am.

The slow death of the large retail American shopping mall has been an interesting phenomenon. There's probably some books out there on it that subject i would like to read.

I went into a mall for the first time in probably 5yrs about a month ago. It was sad to see as it was only ~40% occupied. The area it is in is excellent so I was surprised to see it in such a dismal state. This is a complete indoor mall, but just about 10MI north of it is an outdoor mall that is probably @ 95% occupation. Realize this in Phx, AZ and even in the middle of summer, the outdoor mall, people are constantly there - some things just don't make sense.

None near me are closing...but I don't really care. I haven't shopped at JCP in many, many years.

Boils down mostly to: the internet (Amazon especially), outlet malls, generational turnover affecting shopping trends, and Walmart/Target. We haven't even seen the worst of it either since the mall debt bomb hasn't gone off yet.

Haven't shopped at the JCP nearby for quite a while. Most of the stores closing are probably in dead malls. o_O

What is generally considered to be the best mall in the Chicago area is an outdoor center with basically full occupancy. I was there on the coldest day of the year this holiday season and the place was still packed. I'd rather go there and freeze my ass off a bit than suffer another stuffy, sterile, dated indoor mall that does nothing but remind me of my teenage years...complete with the very same shitty food. A lot of GenXers and Millennials seem to feel the same way.

I used to buy all my underwear and undershirts from Penneys. Then I stopped wearing any they went cheap and the quality took a dive so I looked elsewhere. That was about the same time they replaced all their experienced staff with minimum wage, minimum effort know nothings. It was like Penneys looked at Kmart at a source of inspiration.

Wards, Sears, Penney's, anyone seeing a trend here?

Expect to see this trend grow in the upcoming years. Online retail is putting many mortar and brick stores out of business.

I can't wait until VR becomes mainstream. Going to the mall will all be done via VR in your home. It's going to feel so real that your brain will be tricked into thinking you're at the mall. You'll be able to buy clothes, attend the matinee, go to the food court, talk to people, via VR.

It's going to be amazing.

We still shop at JCP. It's the only store we have within 20 miles that sells somewhat decent clothes. One store is it's own, in a little shopping plaza. But 1 store is an anchor store in another town with a mall that is pretty much dead. The owners of the mall have plans to redo the entire place and give it a new face with some amenities, but I don't think it will help. It'd be nice though. If you go 60 miles north or south of here, the malls are bustling and probably 95% occupied.

Why not!

With a VR headset your dreams can all come true. You can even go into Victoria Secrets and sniff the lingerie. Hit on that hot girl you were to scared to do in realife. Maybe even get into a mall fight and have mall security chase you throughout the mall.
