As some of you know, my major is Asian History but I've always had a strong interest in Math and all sciences. :)

*** RANT - irrelevant to the thread ***
Well, last year, I lost just about all my faith in Math professors when I failed Math 101. What blew me off was that I already knew how to solve semi-difficult differentiation and integration problems before I headed to university. I got a B+ in Math 100 but failed 101. We covered differential equations in 3 lectures and the prof in her strong Eastern European accent told me to just memorize the chart and use them somehow. The textbook was crap and the midterm was filled with questions that made no sense. :( About 70% of so of my class failed. And this was not even an advanced Calculus course. Just a normal one for all Science majors. :Q

I still aced Physics 101/102, though. :D I asked so many questions in class that professors from both classes still recognize me and say "hi" when I see them around campus. :) Just trying to make a point that my lack of effort was not the only reason for failing Math.
*** END RANT ***

Any ways, I want to retake Math 101 and take some 200-level Physics courses next year as my elective.

Since I lost all my faith in Math professors, will you share your secrets on how you survived through your Math courses? This forum is filled with engineers and B.Sc.'s, so share your secrets, folks! :D

What are some good textbooks, study guides or references for various Calculus and college-level Math courses?

I plan to retake Calculus II (Integral Calculus and intro to diff. equations), Calculus III and some matrix algebra.

Thanks. :)

there is one Calculus textbook which literally everyone I know use, I used it in High school and College,
the hardcover is green with faces of famous matheticans. 5th ed, and I forgot the author... sorry... I will find out after the game. (World Cup as in)

I'm a math major... if you thought calc was tough... oh man, you better stick with Asian studies...:p

but seriously, a professor can make or break a course. I'd recommend asking other students what they thought of their math professors and registering for a class that has a GOOD professor. I definitely wouldn't have made it with out some excellent teachers.

The one bad professor I had was the one for my probability class and now i'm scarred for life when it comes to probability.

I don't find Calculus tough. :p

I need a good book though. Back in IB Math, I didn't like the Math teacher and with personal issues and all, I skipped most of our Calculus sections and almost got in big trouble for that. :p I just took a Coles notes and a nice elementary calculus textbook and spend a few hours studying. I aced the exam. :D

I'm sure that there are some good professors out there, but just in case, I'd like to make sure that I have some good books to turn to. And perhaps even pre-study a few chapters before I jump into the lectures. I did try to find some good textbooks at the library last year with no luck. And my textbook made no sense so I got screwed. :)

So I want a list of good books or study guides so that I feel safer before I take any more math courses. Will you share the list of textbooks you found useful for your major? Or did professors matter a lot more than books?

Coles notes. It can't get any easier than that.

Cole's notes? Can't find it. This one looks good. I'm thikning about a text book with answers so I can do lots of problems and get a jump on it before the class starts.
