I am convinced of this, but folks tell me too much of a stretch. I don't think so.
The Platesays THX1169, that is a reference to George Lucas's easter egg, THX1138, which is the title of his first movie, and is mentioned in all of his movie. For example, Han Solo is talking to the Storm Troopers on the radio, and he tells then the prisoners are being taken to cell block "thx1138."
It is also on the back of the robots in Phantom Menace. And, basically all of his films.

Glen, what is the supposed significance of using 69 instead of 38? Is QT in 5th grade?

QT and Bill are huge fans of George Lucas and Star Wars. Bill's Hattori Hanzo has a Darth Maul on it, and the license plate of his jeep is almost unreadable, but you can make out the last few letters X1169. So, clearly, the full tag must read THX1169, which is an intentional mistake. (The movie is full of them. When karen is reading the pregnancy Test Kit directions, they are upside down. That is just one of many many intention mistakes.)It should read THX1138, a reference to George Lucas's first film, and his favorite Easter egg. At least all of the Star Wars films have a THX1138 in them. In A New Hope, Han Solo tells them he is taking "prisoner" Chewy to cell block 1138. The battle droids in Phantom menace have 1138 on their chest pieces. Etc? And, George got that from ?2001, A Space Odyssey? where the computer HAL has ?THX SW GL 1138" on one of his panels.
