I hope mine will be able to run the 6-8 core variant of Zen 2.

After the upgrade assuming it works, I have to ask myself a question.. do I pass this 1600 down to my family or just sell it.

Since AM4 is supposed to be compatable, and you are only talking 8 cores, I would think with a bios update it would be fine. I think the problem with be with 12 or 16 core on a cheaper motherboard, like a b320 or even a 450
