Liquor store said my ID is fake, but it's not

So I went to the liquor store on saturday, one that I have been to at least half a dozen times and tried to buy a 1.75 of Malibu and some Stoli Blueberri Vodka. I get to the counter and the clerk looks at my ID and says it's fake, then asks her manager and he tells me they aren't going to serve me because it's a fake ID.

The thing is, it's a REAL FREAKING ID. The reason they are saying it's fake is because there is black crap on the back from my cheap wallet. I asked them to call a cop, I asked them to scan it, the manager refused both requests. I also told him that there must be something wrong then becuase I had bought there at least 4-5 times before to which he replied "we can't catch you every time."

So the reason I want cops input:
Aren't you supposed to call a cop and take the ID if it is a fake id?
Also, would you be pissed if dispatch told you to go to a liqour store to check an ID?

I ask because I almost called the police (non-emergency) to get someone out there. If there wasn't another liqour store half a mile away I would have. No problems at store #2 even though they noticed the same thing.

So, what do you think? Call the cops next time that happens?

Are you that desperate for a drink that you can't wait to get to the next liquor store a half mile away?

UM, WTF?

This is a store, then can sell to whomever they wish to above legal age. Just b/c you have a valid ID, doesn't give you the right to buy anything at that store.

Time to find another store.

I grew up in Alaska and I live in Maui. If you have to go more than a half mile in either place to find a liquor store, you're somewhere you shouldn't be and you're probably going to die.

Don't call the cops, they won't care. Just stop going to that store for anything. Period.

And clean off your license. Use a cleaner that won't eat through the lamination.

They have a right to choose who they sell to and who they refuse. At the grocery store I worked at they told us during training that if an ID was peeling or had suspicious marks on it that we are to refuse sale.

You do realize that if they had sold it to you and it had been a sting that they could loose their liquor license, be closed down, the person selling could face huge fines and jail time?
I would much rather avoid that then sell a couple bottles of liquor. Go get a new ID or start going to the store a half mile further.

I can't believe a liquor store accused you of having a fake id and they didn't call the police.
This has to be shen's ... In PA the liquor store guys can just arrest you and hand you over to the police... They are officers of teh liquor control board. but whatever... if it is legit just go again and hope you dont get the same guy

IIRC, they can NOT sell to you if they think your breath smells bad and it is perfectly legal.

thepd7: Been there, my problem at the time was I looked very young for my age. After arguing with the clerks, I just told them to give me my license back and that they just lost a regular customer. The clerks wouldn't call the police, even though I requested it. Take your business elsewhere.

That is true, but your logic is seriously flawed. The store is refusing to make a sale due to a WRONG reason.

My passport is a bit rough on it; been in a pocket with a bust pen so there's a blue stain on the edge of the pages, and the plastic covering is starting to wear and looks like you could peel it off if you pulled hard - I was going to florida last summer and the US Homeland Security guys that accompany flights that go into america and do security checks at the airport over here in Belfast all passed around my passport to have a look at it and see what each other thought. It's a freaking real passport, ok? :(

Immediately afterwards I was "randomly" selected for a search - practically everything but cavity - the guy even asked if he could search my hair and socks . They also put a red sticker on the back of my passport with someone's initials on it, then I was thoroughly searched again when getting on at the gate :(. They even had the two DVDs I was bringing over taken out and induvidually x-rayed, along with most of the stuff in my case.

I was in san antonio and got turned down because I didn't have a TX ID, despite the fact I had my Wi ID and a US passport. He said a lot of people were passing off fakes, I brought up the difficulty of faking a US passport vs the difficulty of faking a TX ID but it didn't change the fact he has the right to refuse for any reason.

People who are 100% legal get turned down for drinks all the time. It is the store's right (and the employee's rights) to save their own butts from massive fines. If they think you are too young, too drunk, too generous (you'd give the alcohol to a minor), fake id, or whatever they want, they have the right to refuse you. All you do is go down the street to the next store and buy it there.

so what? they still have the right to deny them service for any reason (well within the law).

them being wrong has nothing to do with it.
