Liquidless Booze Causing Stir In N.Y.

NEW YORK -- It's touted as a hangover-free, calorie-free and carb-free way to enjoy alcohol.

It's called AWOL, short for Alcohol Without Liquid, and it's coming to New York City this weekend.

FeedRoom

Liquidless Booze

Manufactured in Britain, the machine allows people to inhale a mist of alcohol mixed with oxygen through a tube or vaporizer, absorbing it into their lungs.

One hit costs about $10, and lasts about 20 minutes.

Though new and different, the idea seems a bit too foreign to some New Yorkers.

"I don't think I'd be sitting in a bar with that thing in my mouth," said John Sharell, of Manhattan. "It looks ridiculous."

Ty Imami, of New Jersey, agrees.

"That's nuts," he said, adding "What's next?"

Westchester County Executive Andrew Spano wants a local or state ban against it because he worries it will attract underage drinkers.

Spano said the Alcohol Without Liquid machine would harm efforts to drive down underage teen drinking and driving under the influence.

"This is really attractive to youngsters," Spano told the Journal News of Westchester in Thursday's editions.

"It's portable, and it will wind up at parties with kids. ... We don't want it in Westchester, and in fact, we don't want it in the state," Spano added.

Westchester has a chronic underage drinking problem, and recently enlisted the help of a Justice Department contractor, the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation, to investigate the problem.

Over the past 18 months or so, teen drinking in Westchester has led to at least one party death, some spectacles of widespread drunkenness at school events and some police raids on home drinking parties.

The machine is already in use in other parts of the world. Promoters praise it for inducing a sense of well-being and say it doesn't lead to hangovers.

The machine is set to show up at the Trust Lounge in Manhattan on Friday. Its American distributor is Spirit Partners, of North Carolina.

Kevin Morse, of Spirit, told the newspaper, "It's just a fun new way for adults to experience alcohol." He said the machines were being sold to bars and individuals, at a cost between $3,000 and $3,600.

"A lot of people haven't seen the machine yet and are acting off of a lot of rumors," he said.

No bars in Westchester have bought the machine, but Spano said his concern was that any venue offering it would have a difficult time keeping track of how much alcohol a customer is using.

Spano isn't the only elected official to be concerned about the machines. Suffolk County Legislator Jon Cooper had said last month he wanted to keep them out of that county, and that the county Legislature would be discussing it at upcoming meetings.

WTH would anyone use this thing?

Ditto.

It sounds pretty cool.

Of course, I enjoy it when I see the word "hit" used in this context in the mass media.

:D

10$ for 20 mins isn't any good though, prices will have to come down for it to ever be accepted.

Hrm, I've been doing that for years...

Take a glass of ice101 or bacardi 151, light it on fire, put a cup on top of it, burn the alcohol out of it, and then sniff the fumes

It's as potent as drinking it, but it will hit you in just a few minutes instead of over the course of an hour... and no, it's not the huffing effects that you feel :p

Hangover free, calorie free... I'm a bit confused though, they say one hit costs $10 (way too expensive) and lasts 20 minutes... does that mean you're inhaling the alcohol for 20 minutes, or the buzz lasts 20 minutes? Because if the buzz only lasts 20 minutes forget about it.

Wouldn't this be more abusive on your brain and such? Huffing any fumes can't be too good.

The alcohol ends up in the blood stream and makes its way to the brain whether you drink it or inhale it. The only way it could be bad for you is if they weren't giving you enough oxygen.

It's no different, AFAIK.

The alcohol molecules still end up in your bloodstream.

Hmm... I am confused now though.. if they were going into your bloodstream, wouldn't it also be processed the same way as normal alcohol.. resulting in a net calorie gain?

Yeah that's why I was wondering if it may be harmful in some way.

You'll just have to get the special "travel" version that bolts on right behind the windshield...

Our biology though it will allow for it was certainly not made for it. It is my opinion it will likely turn out bad for you in the end.

inhaling alcohol will make it end up directly through the nasal cavaity, through the blood brain barrier into the brain.

drinking it will end up in the GI where alcohol is taken up by the liver into the blood stream

anyone correct me if im wrong. been a while since i've touched any physiology

so yes inhaling would be like injecting directly into the blood stream. absorption is 100% while ingesting will decrease absorption to some extent

We are all AWARE that "Getting drunk off shots of tequilla" is bad for us. This is being touted as somehow better.

I for one am leary of the potential damage to my lung tissue. It's endured uite enough already, thank you very much.

The term "Beer Bong" has taken on a whole new term, unfortunately.

You kids already don't know how to hold your liquor...not even in the "old fashioned way" I.E. drinking it. Now we've got this.

I can see it now...college frat parties...Deeko getting dumped by YAG and posting about it here....sadness follows.
