Liquid cooling an 8800GT?

I recently upgraded from an old 7300 to an 8800GT. While I am greatly enjoying the enormous performance boost, I am NOT enjoying the added noise! This thing is very loud and I was used to the computer being whisper quiet even in dead silence. Unacceptable 🙂

The anandtech forums always came through for me in the past. So I am asking for help again. Is there an affordable way to water cool this thing?

Any other suggestions for how I could make that thing run less loud are fine too, but my understanding is that given the huge heat generated by the 8800 cards, liquid cooling would be my only option...

8800gt does not generate lots of heat. i bet you haven't used rivatuner to run the ran @ 40% idle and 70% under load. unless u like to game with no sound, u wont hear it.

there is no need to liquid cool an 8800gt, invest in a cheap arctic cooling cooler (or zalman) and you will get a drop in temps and noise.

THanks for your reply. Unfortunately heat is not the issue, noise is. I'll check out this rivatuner app, but I would need a version that runs in linux as well since I am a primary linux user. That's why I think liquid cooling might be my best solution, noise.

actually louis its dependant on the cooling on the card.

my 8800GT i got short ended and its a single slot cooler and there is no quiet setting to it.

Think of the 7900GT sinks back in the days.

And what pisses me off even more, well i didnt care about the cooling, but ITS NOT REFERENCE DESIGN, so no FC blocks for me. :[

Best thing to ask is, what card do you have? newegg link if possible on the exact one.

unless you already have a water cooling set up in your system. I see no financial benefit to going water cooling just for your videocard.

You can go with thermalright's cooler with 120mm fan. and you'll neve rhear it

if you already have a water loop I suggest going with full face from EK, XPCS, or Dangerden.

I run GPU cooler with ram sink and found that I need a fan on the card anyways.

Here is the card I bought: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814150252

I want to go liquid cooling not for financial benefit, but because silence is a high priority for me. Nearly everthing else in the system is absolutely silent though, so liquid cooling is something I'm interested in although I understand it could be expensive and difficult. But if you say there is another fan that I could buy for the card that would work quieter, then I am very interested. Can you give me more information about where I can find it?

Water cooling often comes with noise, you need a pump running and fans on the radiator.

Often perhaps, but as a matter of design water can be very quiet, even silent if you want to go passive only. As an example, I can power down my 6 case fans to about 7volts, while keeping my 6 rads fans at a full 12volts and hear very little beyond the splash of my res. They're all 120mm too. I can't hear my pumps at all. Yup, water can be quiet if you want it that way! 🙂

As for the OP, take a look at the EK blocks. Perhaps you can find one to fit your card.

not worth h2oing if its just gpu.

He wants to quiet his system down. 49.99 dollar option is tons better then a

40 + 40 + 40 + 20 option. 😀

LOL HW, you missed my 1 yr shopping spree. 😀

To someone like me, there is no pricetag limit. If i want it i'll get it. If they dont make it, i'll heir someone to build it.

If thats not possible, then i'll get something better. 😀

But i dont think the OP is truely prepared for water. Lack of research, just asking for part recomendation. Probably didnt even read my sticky linked at the bottom. :T

So i think his safest bet, since he just wants silence is to stay on upgraded air. 😀

Makes more sense too since air = higest overclock possible without volt moding.

We all started the same way, morla. The OP MAY be another champion water-cooler in the making who hasn't caught the bug yet!

Hey! I'll have you know that I would do lots of research... if I did decide to do water cooling 🙂 But based on this thread it looks convincing that that's not what I need.

lol...

most people go cpu first then gpu.

If you do have your heart on it, then ask away. Im more of a water expert then a air expert. 😀

However, heres the difference.

49.95 air sink + 15 min setup and your ready to go!

vs.

35.00 mcw60
13 dollar ram sinks
8 dollar mosfet sink
45.00 D-tek DB-1 pump
35.00 MCR120
5 dollars in tubing
5 dollars in fan
2 dollar zipties
2 dollar t-line or
25 dollar res.

+ 1-2 hours setting up
+ 12-24 hour leak testing/bleeding

:T

if option 2 sounds better, then i'll teach you how.

Yeah, I understand. I don't think I need to go that route. I just want to do what it takes to make my system run quiet. I don't overclock anything, and I'm not too much of a performance junkie. Sound is really my #1 priority, and I heard that liquid is a way to cool effectively without my computer sounding like an airplane taking off... therefore I'm gonna grab this piece recommended in this thread, if you guys say it will be quiet, and hope for the best. Thanks to all.

no im assuring you that it will be quiet.

i think you took my statement in the wrong context. 😀

That's what I have on my 8800GT. No moving parts = very quiet. 😉 Cheap too, have seen them for under $20 on occasion.

I just want to bump and say I got this hooked up, and it's perfect. Does exactly what I wanted and my system is even quieter than before. Thanks for the patient help 🙂
