Interesting...it detected the Xbox CPU as a Celeron (with less cache than a traditional P3.) Hmm, and I always thought there was a full-fledged P3 in there!

Microsoft spent so much time working on security to keep people from doing this, yet people in their spare time broke it. I think I remember a microsoft exec touting that it would take at least 3 years to break the kerberos security on the Xbox.

Oh well, its a fun game, I like reading the papers on how people figured out how to get around their security. Makes me realize how little I know about this stuff.

Yeah, the Kernel Panic doesn't look all that nice yet ;)

But they do say that it is known how the HDD is set up, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem to change the kernel to correctly address it.

what does this have to do with kerb? kerb is an authentication protocol.

Yes, as far as I understand it, the Xbox uses kerberos to authenticate the software thats running on it came from a trusted party. In other words, any games that are licensed by microsoft are given a specific key that gets compared with the internal one to make sure its valid before it runs. This done to keep kids from burning their own CDs and just running them on the thing.

I could be wrong, but locked within the cobwebbed corridor of my brain thats how Xbox is run.

yes, you are wrong.

it is a network authentication protocol, it gives you a way to say I am really me when talking to a peer on a network. it has nothing to do with software authentication.

I like the determination of the many linux enthusiasts who will not stop trying to get their beloved OS to run on any hardware that the world throws at them. I have read many articles of people getting Linux running on various console (Dreamcast, Playstation, and now the Xbox), as well as many other devices (handhelds, web appliances, etc.). Its just an amazing accomplishment. I think that Linux particularly on the Xbox is a good thing because its so cheap but comes with everything you might need (ethernet, hard disk, fast processor) for a good workstation. I'm sure there will be a lot more people purchasing the Xbox as Linux becomes more and more usable on it. It would be a great gift for my girlfriend as she doesn't have anymore space in her room for a computer, but already has a TV. Simply hook up the Xbox ($199 + $20 for a modchip) with Linux on it to her TV and away she can go.
