First, DOS is out the window, they're both command line, but thats it 🙂

Another very useful site is Freshmeat.net for software.

There is only one person who can answer the "Should I get a better box" question, care to guess who? 😉

O'Reilly makes the best books IMO, they have books for just about anything from basic UNIX/Linux stuff, to more advanced topics, have a look and see what looks good.
 
Dont worry about a book. The links are fine. Also, the p90 should be fine for command line. I would upgrade to slack 8 though.
