I am wondering if linux requires a reinstall when you upgrade your cpu?.. I know win 98 or 2k doesnt.
I am thinking about going from a "celeron 400 slot" to p3600 slot on that box

No, you'll be fine. I swapped out a linux drive from a P3-450 to my XP 1600 box and linux detected all the new stuff, removed all the old stuff, and everything worked fine.
