since we are mentioning ubuntu here... how do you edit the command line in the Grub OS menu when you dual boot ubuntu and windows? say ubuntu is the default and i want to change it to windows... i am lost as to how to change the default OS.... 😕

Modify the "default" value in grub.conf. I think.

has anyone actually modded the grub before... i know you can just edit it from the menu, but im hesitant to change any values in the case that i screw my boot screen up

change what number? both ubuntu and winxp have save default on the screen when you press 'e' for edit. but im not sure what to do once in the edit screen....

No, you need to boot into Ubuntu and run 'sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst' and edit that. In there will be a line that says "default X", change X to be the number of the menu entry you want to be the default.

ok... im in the sudo gedit now...
i see the 'defaultX' just like you said. now the option is on 0 like i thought... and windows is the fourth option on the list... do i simply change it to 3? im sorry for sounding redundant but im hesitant to change anything in the boot sector that im unsure about.
