i was wondering if i dowloaded big files on to a desktop running linux, would i be able to transfer them to my laptop running xp pro?
i'ma try mandrake linux

In general - yes. It could be a bit cumbersome, though, depending on the details of your setup.
It's usually easier to transfer files the other way, since linux reads well all windows partitions.
 
This is pretty simple. If you use SAMBA on the linux system, you can setup network shares that the windows system can read and write from without any problems.

lol, yea this is way easier than configuring samba for someone who hasn't done it before.
