How about you grab a live CD (like Gnoppix or Knoppix) do some reading and make these judgements for yourself.

Then your best bet would be to try out a LiveCD. Also if you have enough RAM you could run VMware so you can run linux while inside Windows.

Since you do not know much about linux or even if you really want to use it just download a live cd like Knoppix

Knoppix is the way to go. It will let you play around with linux without installing anything. Just download the ISO, burn a CD image, and reboot. Knoppix should boot up and everything you do will only last till the next time you reboot. So you can't screw up your computer (unless you started deleting files...)

It's Linux, Linux is Linux. Millions of people program on it every day, whether you like it or not is up to you.

Then do some reading... Read some of the posts in the Operating Systems Forum, read the Anandtech section on linux, and use google.

Knoppix is fine, it will certainlly give you a good idea what running linux is all about. If you want to progress you can always install another distro, or even do a hard drive install of knoppix. You might also want to look into Redhat or Mandrake, both are geared more towards newbies and it's generally easier to find support for them. Linux is great for programmers and really shines when it comes to running a server. I use Linux as my primary desktop and have pretty much replaced everything that I used to do with Windows (except for some games that I used to play).
