ok how do i install gentoo with a network card on a laptop its not detecting my pcmcia card.

Try a search on the Gentoo forums if you haven't already.

Chances are someone has already had the problem you're having and solved it.

What's the make/model of your card?

its a 3com megahertz lan+modem, model 3cxfem656 c

After you've booted off the Gentoo install disc, try:

modprobe pcmcia_core
modprobe cb_enabler
modprobe 3c575_cb
dhcpcd eth0 (assuming you have your IP assigned via dhcp).

Hopefully the pcmcia-cs drivers come on the disc.

Edit:

This may not be very helpful.
I have no experience with PCMCIA network cards as I don't have one. 🙂

ok someone name a pcmcia network card that will work for gentoo install, i just tried to install with the cds but it doesnt work did everything stright to the manual and nothing.

If you want accurate quick help, the best bet is the gentoo installation forums. They'd be able to help you the best.

it seems hard to install gentoo tho

But the install docs are excellent.

Was discussing this exact thing with someone earlier. Having good install docs is obviously a good thing in many ways - HOWEVER - it has also led to the proliferation of clueless newbies thinking they're l33t, which annoys me to no end.

I use Gentoo since I don't mind compiling stuff, and I like to live on the bleeding edge. 😉

Debian would be my choice if I had a slower system that I didn't want to compile stuff on, and if I didn't care about having the latest KDE, GCC, etc.
