title says it:

has anyone here had any success with linux, xfree86 and the ati7500 mobiles?

in particular im getting a cheap dell book soon, and the 4150 doesn't come with a choice for nvidia subsystem (a proven linux performer), thus my ati question

thx in advance to anyone who knows

You'll be better off with the ATi anyway, since NVidia keeps their code closed, while ATi's is an open source driver maintained in the main XFree code tree.

From using a desktop 7500LE with Linux all the time, I know that for an R7500 (mobile or not) you need at least XFree 4.2.0, and you'll be fine. Note that current 3D rendering infrastructure does not work when running multi-head.

I'm running RedHat 8.0 on a IBM Thinkpad T30 that has the ATI 7500 Mobillity. Have not tried openGL. Normal stuff works. Screen gets scrambled when suspending. Not sure if display driver or something else, still debugging. For for usual stuff, works just fine.

i've been away from linux for quite some time, never got deep enought into it though, but i do remember getting opengl w/gf2 was easy as heck...

good to hear you can run linux desktops with the ati's too...now i can get the exact system i want and be sure that i'll be able to run the xp/redhat dual, even if there will be some code tweaks neccessary perhaps, guess it'll be a learning experience ;)

thx for the input guys
