Linux woes.... Guru needed

I am having problems booting to linux. Just as the OS begins to load... it hangs when it gets to:

LI

I've tried installing RH7.1 and 7.2 using both custom and workstation installs - everything seems to install fine. I chose 'no bootloader' as the boot option but i think it's trying to load LILO? Win2k installs and runs fine so I don't think it may be a HW issue... it's probably pilot error (im new to linux). Thanks in advance to anyone who can lend a helping hand here...

You have to install the bootloader (LILO) if you want to get into Linux without a bootdisk. Just let it install the bootloader and it will set up your dualboot automatically (you want to dualboot right?).

EDIT - If your dual booting make sure you install your non-linux OS (e.g. 2k) first. Otherwise 2k will remove LILO from the boot sector and replace it with its own loader ( in other words - no booting into linux).

Sorry,
Gday
I'm in the same boat almost, except I cant even get RH7.1 to install
but if you've already got a dual boot, u hv to use the boot floppy to load up Linux.
Right?
Tks.

No you don't have to use the boot floppy. It just depends on how you set it up. On installation you will be given the option to use LILO in you MBR (Master Boot Record). This is the memory address that is accessed by the BIOS and tells the computer where to start reading from to load up the OS. If you did this option, it may have automatically detected your windows partition and/or settings that were origionally in the MBR and added them. Or you could have loaded LILO to the front of one of the hard drive partitions (I have never done this so not sure exactly what happens). You can also have told it not to install LILO and instead used a boot floppy (basically whenever you want to boot to Linux, you just use the floppy, as it has all the correct information to tell the BIOS how to load up linux).

LILO can be configured to do multi-boot across MANY OS's. There are plenty of websites that give the details for this, just do a search on your favorite search engine for LILO.

Either check the thread in OS that is suprisingly similar to this one... Or check out Linuxdoc.org. Ive seen this question answered plenty of times, you just have to find the answer. You will need to load lilo or another linux bootloader like grub. If you are dualbooting (you didnt mention it but Im not going to assume that means you are single booting, Im used to information being withheld 😉), you can use Win2k/XP bootloader to select Linux, and there is information out there on this.
