Linux, Win 2000, or just toss the machine out...????

I just brought home a Olivetti 160/RS SNX server home.. only has 96 meg on board with 2 100MHZ CPU's.. EISA 5 slots with 3 PCI.. 450 Watt power supply, room for 11 half height drives, have 2, 1 gig scsi running off of 2940UW controller in it.. Was going to set it
up as a gateway machine, for my cable modem.. Thats so when I turn off my machine my daughter does not lose her internet capabilities.. Anyway I tried to load Mandrake 7.2 on it and it finds everything, loads up install fine, then when reboots goes to stage1 and dies at that prompt.. maybe Im doing something wrong.. anyway.. WHAT WOULD YOU GUYS SUGGEST AS OPERATING SYSTEM FOR A GATEWAY MACHINE..... Ive put win95 on it, win98 and win2000 and they all work fine,, but Linux, not yet.. ANY SUGGESTIONS.... Should I get the
Dremel out and put in a different board? HA HA

I'd suggest buying a cheap cable/dsl router for a gateway

Why buy when you've already got a piece of equipment that will do the work you need it to?

I've setup a few redhat machines to do NAT/firewalling/ftp and web serving. Pretty easy.


FreSCO has a good reputation too.

Both of you have given me some great input, Ive priced a router, and I may go that way, but I also want to have the fun of getting a Linux box set up.. I think I will do both! Will order the router and use it. But just for fun, I will retry Linux on the free computer box I have sitting here just to see If I have the right stuff to get it done.. Thanks Ladi and Soybomb for the input.. Now to find a even better price on a router.. and try redhat 6.5 I have sitting on the shelf.. Computers make my life fun.... but it does not hurt that I'm so good looking.. HA HA..
